The relative U.S. interest rate outlook right now fits the weaker dollar narrative - futures markets have the Fed cutting rates next year more than any major or emerging market central bank. And even if the Fed does go that far, other central banks are sure to lower their policy rates more than markets are currently predicting. The French bank also did not comment on plans to end its research partnership with Morningstar after more than four years. The expansion of the equities business by BNP comes as its Wall Street peers have reduced investment banking headcount this year amid sluggish trading and dealmaking activities. In Asia, BNP competes with large Western banks including Morgan Stanley (MS.N), Goldman Sachs (GS.N), JPMorgan (JPM.N) and UBS (UBSG.S), as well as a host of local investment banks in the cash equities business. One of the sources said BNP could boost its Asia equities headcount by as much as 20 over the next year. The bulk of BNP's in-house equities research team, mainly in Hong Kong and Singapore, departed as a result of that deal.

Foot Locker (FL) reported quarterly results that can only be described as better than feared: Nearly all of the important metrics came in weaker than a year ago, but they weren't as terrible as expectations on Wall Street. While Wednesday's surge put Foot Locker's quarter-to-date gains at nearly 60%, the stock was still down roughly 27% in 2023. Better sales guidance than previously forecast and only a slightly worse earnings outlook also helped juice shares of Foot Locker. In our view, this is appropriate because Foot Locker is a turnaround story. Shoppers leave the American multinational sportswear and footwear retailer, Foot Locker store in Spain.

Bottom line It was another terrific quarter from Salesforce with steady, double-digit revenue growth and a continued operating margin uplift, leading to a huge increase in earnings per share. Additionally, the topline growth story has some game to it, thanks to the surge in interest in its Data Cloud. By Cloud unit, the most exciting performance in the quarter came from the Data Cloud. Revenue growth accelerated to 22% from 16% in the prior quarter, and the company said it added 1,000 new customers in the quarter alone. Artificial intelligence is driving the interest in the Data Cloud, as more customers seek to use Mulesoft's integration technology to unlock data across legacy systems, cloud apps, and devices.

"The rising geopolitical threats in APAC has been a driver of military spending for the Western nations. In addition, APAC countries have become more important for their own military expenditures, which present some opportunities for Western defense contractors through either exports or partnerships," they added. Quoting research from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute , Bernstein said that global defense spending reached a record high of $2.2 trillion last year. Why is defense spending on the rise? For instance, South Korea's defense spending is high given its longstanding tensions with neighbor North Korea.

"These measures could boost (earnings) growth and help asset prices recover in 2024," Liu said. As per the forecasts, the consumer staples and software sectors are set to post earnings growth of 40% and 30%, respectively. The consumer discretionary and industrial sectors are each expected to see roughly 20% growth, while the real estate sector may grow 18%. Such stable or growth-centric government policies would also boost investor confidence in the e-commerce and consumer sectors, Lau added. Held every four years, the latest regional election was also the first polls since North Korea revised its election law in August to allow multiple candidates. The dollar was down 0.1% against its rivals after gains in the last two sessions, making gold less expensive for other currency holders. Large amounts of radioactive wastewater have accumulated at the nuclear plant since it was damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. It began discharging treated and diluted wastewater into the ocean on Aug. 24 and finished releasing the third 7,800-ton batch on Monday. The discharges have been strongly opposed by fishing groups and neighboring countries including China, which banned all imports of Japanese seafood, badly hurting Japanese producers and exporters of scallops and other seafood. Japan’s government has set up a relief fund to help find new markets for Japanese seafood, and the central and local governments have led campaigns to encourage Japanese consumers to eat more fish and support Fukushima seafood producers. The tanks currently hold more than 1.3 million tons of wastewater, most of which needs to be retreated to meet safety standards before release.

US President Joe Biden greets Chinese President Xi Jinping before a meeting during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' week in Woodside, California on November 15, 2023. China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden will strive to keep a lid on tensions between the world's top two economies next year, as they focus on domestic challenges. The two leaders met last week on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' meeting in San Francisco after the global rivalry between the world powers came to a head earlier this year. Their first meeting in a year capped months of diplomatic work aimed at normalizing their shaky bilateral relationship derailed by a suspected spy balloon over continental U.S. early 2023 and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit in August 2022. "You'll see in coming months, the U.S. and China are trying to put a ceiling on their tensions for very pragmatic and domestic reasons," Steve Wilford, partner and Asia Pacific head of global risk analysis at Control Risks, told CNBC Monday.
