Google cut several hundred jobs across the company late Wednesday night as it continues to push for efficiency and focus on its "biggest product priorities," a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC. The layoffs will impact employees within Google's hardware and central engineering teams, as well as workers across Google Assistant, its voice-activated software product. Other parts of the company were also affected, according to Google. Last January, Google slashed its workforce by 12,000 people, or roughly 6% of its full-time employees. "Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally."

YouTube is taking steps to fight against medical misinformation, especially when it comes to finding immediate tips on how to handle an emergency. YouTube users in the U.S. can find videos on 12 topics, including CPR, seizures, choking, bleeding and psychosis. The videos will not contain ads, which means Google -owned YouTube won't make money from them, Graham said. Content moderation has long been a challenge for YouTube, which removes videos if they're found to be in violation of the company's guidelines. Even as the pandemic has subsided, medical misinformation continues to proliferate.

Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, announced it will launch peer-to-peer payments this year, according to a Tuesday blog post. X said the payments will unlock "more user utility and opportunities for commerce" as the platform works to "revolutionize 2024." The blog post did not offer specific details about how the payments will work or when they will officially launch. According to the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System website, X Payments LLC — the payment subsidiary of X — has only obtained money transmission licenses in 14 states so far. Introducing peer-to-peer commerce to the platform would mark the latest sweeping change at X since Musk acquired the company for $44 billion in late 2022.

Apple's iPhone sales in China were down more than 30% year over year for the first week of January, while competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei have "remained much stronger" with flat sales, according to a Sunday note from Jefferies analysts. Jefferies analysts said they believe Apple's iPhone volume will fall by double digits this year in China, adding that they "expect Apple to have even higher revenue pressure in China in 2024." Huawei gained the most smartphone market share in China in 2023, according to the note, rising about 6% year over year. Meanwhile, Apple's market share in China has fallen around 4% year over year, according to the note. The Jefferies analysts said iPhone discounts in China are on the rise, which is likely part of Apple's effort to "defend its share."

Tesla is recalling more than 1.6 million cars in China to fix problems with Autopilot features and locks, state regulators announced Friday. Both issues can be repaired through a free over-the-air software update, so drivers do not have to take their vehicles anywhere, regulators said. Additionally, more than 7,500 Model S and Model X cars were recalled over concerns that, during a crash, the noncollision side door will unlock. The safety regulators recalled around 2 million Tesla cars after determining that some of the company's Autopilot features were confusing and too easy to misuse.

Google said it also plans to introduce health-care-specific versions of Gemini , the company's newest and "most capable" AI model, to MedLM in the future. For instance, HCA Healthcare , one of the largest health systems in the U.S., has been testing Google's AI technology since the spring. Google's MedLM suite can then take those transcripts and break them up into the components of an ER provider note. Tesla is recalling around 2 million of its vehicles in the U.S. to fix Autopilot features that auto safety regulators found to be confusing to drivers, or too easy for them to misuse and abuse. The NHTSA opened an investigation into 11 incidents involving Tesla cars where Autopilot and Autosteer were involved in 2021, a probe which ultimately led to today's voluntary recall. He hopes Tesla and NHTSA will pay special attention to roads with cross traffic, because there have been multiple fatal crashes with trucks in that situation involving Tesla vehicles with Autopilot engaged. If people need to steer, for instance, they must pay attention. The Autopilot system will still be helpful if it just does the accelerating and braking but people could not not pay attention."

Shares of Google closed up 5% Thursday, a day after the company announced its latest artificial intelligence model called Gemini that will compete with products from OpenAI, Microsoft and Meta . But Wells Fargo's trading desk also said the big question is what Google's monetization for Gemini looks like. "In short, I'd summarize GOOG as proving that they still have some bite." Analysts at Bank of America said Wednesday that Alphabet has been under pressure from concerns over Google's AI capabilities this year, so a "well-branded," competitive model could have upsides for its consumer search activity and Cloud enterprise sales. "We think Google has strong AI capabilities, and data suggesting that Google has best in class, proprietary, AI capabilities can be positive for the shares in 1H'24," the analysts wrote in a note.

Reproductive technology startup Orchid on Tuesday announced a comprehensive new genetic test that may help many prospective parents across the U.S. breathe a little easier. Orchid said its new test will help couples identify whether their embryos present genetic risks such as birth defects, neurodevelopmental disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, or pediatric and adult-onset cancers that were previously only detectable after birth. IVF is a taxing process that can cost an average of more than $12,000 in the U.S., according to the Institute for Reproductive Health. Success is not guaranteed, and some people go through multiple rounds of IVF before a pregnancy develops. Orchid's genetic test will cost couples an additional $2,500 per embryo sequenced, but it does not add any new steps or risks to the IVF process, Siddiqui said.

Britain's top competition watchdog said Tuesday that Adobe 's proposed $20 billion acquisition of Figma could harm the U.K.'s digital design sector, findings that could mean a major setback for the merger.
