Eight candidates will appear onstage for the first Republican debate on Wednesday. Many far more politically experienced contenders have met their end under the bright lights of the debate stage. How Republican voters respond will offer some early clues into the ideological future of the party, particularly in a post-Trump era. He participated in eight face-offs during the 2016 campaign and helped coach Mr. Trump for his presidential debates in 2020. The debate offers Mr. Christie an opportunity to take aim at those aligned with Trumpism, even if they are opposed to Mr. Trump.

Here are six takeaways from the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate:Taking shots at RamaswamyWith Trump absent from Wednesday’s debate, the the early target of most of the debate participants was not DeSantis or South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott or any candidate who has ever held elected office before. DeSantis clarified: “Well, statewide.” Asked if he would support a federal six-week abortion ban, DeSantis talked about his electoral victory in Florida. And no one clearly stated they would sign a six-week federal abortion ban – even if they’d approved such laws as governors. At one end of the spectrum stood Haley, who sparred with Pence over the possibility of passing a federal ban. Ahead of the debate, Republican strategists argued that this was the approach Scott wanted to take because it’s his authentic self.

Joe Biden's campaign plastered "Dark Brandon" memes across Fox News' website and Milwaukee. The ads went up on Wednesday, the day of the first GOP presidential debate. In 2022, Insider reported that Capitol Hill Democrats are embracing the "Dark Brandon" meme. This isn't the first time Biden has embraced the "Dark Brandon" meme — a combination of the anti-Biden "Let's Go Brandon" slogan and the popular "Dark MAGA" movement. In late 2022, members of his administration shared the meme several times across social media, with one saying, "Dark Brandon is crushing it."

In the Republican coalition, it is a moment that has culminated decades of change – and one that points to years of turbulence ahead. Overwhelming majorities of Republican voters dismiss the charges against Trump. In Gallup’s latest annual survey of trust in institutions, Republicans expressed less faith in 10 of the 16 measured. Veteran GOP pollster Whit Ayres points to another, more personal, reason so many GOP voters have discounted the charges against Trump. Trump is the Republican most effectively riding that wave now, but it seems unlikely to recede whenever he fades from the political scene.

The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Without Trump at the debate, seven other candidates are set to make their cases for the White House. Here's a look at how the debate is coming together, as the GOP candidates had to meet a set of criteria to even appear onstage. Christie, once a close ally of Trump, has consistently been the fiercest critic of the former president in the GOP race. Suarez, should he make it onstage, will likely just focus on boosting his profile to GOP voters beyond South Florida.

The candidates are also required to sign a pledge certifying that they will support the eventual Republican nominee. Several more are likely to take place, however, with an October debate likely to occur in Alabama, according to a person familiar with the operations of the Republican National Committee.

The GOP front-runner is expected to surrender, potentially for fingerprinting and a mug shot, on Thursday or Friday, a senior law enforcement source told CNN. His legal quagmire is likely to yet again dominate the GOP race, drowning out rivals who have so far largely failed to exploit Trump’s four indictments. It’s a tactic that appears to be working among GOP primary voters given his wide polling lead thus far. Ron DeSantis – announced that, as expected, he’d skip the debate in Milwaukee. Asa Hutchinson, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that Trump’s legal troubles will force every Republican on the debate stage to show their hand.

An August riot near the Swedish capital Stockholm took place during an Eritrean cultural festival and not a children’s fair, as suggested by a post on social media. The post (seen here and viewed more than 500,000 times) includes a video and a caption, reading: "Riots yesterday at a children's fair in Sweden." According to local media, protesters marched towards the festival area, got through the police cordons, threw rubbish at the festival participants and set tents and vehicles ablaze. Former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the first Republican presidential primary debate set for later this month, his White House campaign said Tuesday. Pence joins at least half a dozen other candidates who have already clinched spots on the debate stage, including Florida Gov. For lower-polling candidates — a bucket that could include everyone except for Trump and DeSantis — a breakout debate performance could be critical. CNN —A federal judge has dismissed Donald Trump’s counter defamation lawsuit against E. Jean Carroll, dealing another legal blow to the former president. Carroll said, “Oh, yes he did.”In throwing out Trump’s lawsuit, the judge wrote, “Indeed, the jury’s verdict in Carroll II establishes, as against Mr Trump, the fact that Mr Trump ‘raped her’, albeit digitally rather than with his penis. Trump is set to go to trial in January on another defamation lawsuit brought by Carroll in 2019 for statements Trump made while he was president. The former president has also appealed that jury’s verdict and other “adverse” rulings. Trump has now been indicted on nearly 80 felony counts and has dug himself into the deepest possible hole. Michael Gerhardt Deborah R. But the third indictment goes further — for the first time — by charging Trump with criminal attempts to undermine American democracy. In contrast, as each set of indictments shows, there is an abundance of actual evidence of Trump’s misconduct.
