A second decomposed body found this week in the home of former Rhode Island mayor Susan Menard, who was identified as the other body, has been identified as her boyfriend, authorities said Friday. Daniel Grabowski also died in Menard’s Woonsocket home, according to a statement from the Office of the State Medical Examiners at the Rhode Island Department of Health. Authorities identified Menard's body earlier this week as one of the two dead in the house. Menard died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, officials said Friday. One person is dead after an explosion sent eight people to hospitals and caused the collapse of a nearby building in Chicago on Tuesday, officials said. The individual, who was the most seriously injured person in the Tuesday explosion, succumbed to his injuries on Friday, according to a tweet from the Chicago Fire Department. The explosion happened on Tuesday morning, leading to the collapse of a nearby building just before 9:30 a.m. at West Washington Boulevard and North Central Avenue, the Chicago Fire Department tweeted. The eight people who were hospitalized had injuries ranging from burns to traumatic injuries, Ferman said. The cause of the explosion and the collapse remain under investigation, according to officials.

A military contractor known as “Fat Leonard," who cut off his ankle bracelet and fled after pleading guilty in a major U.S. Navy corruption scandal, was apprehended in Venezuela, authorities said Wednesday. Leonard Glenn Francis, who was on house arrest in San Diego and weeks away from sentencing, removed his GPS tracker Sept. 4, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Members of the San Diego Fugitive Task Force went to Francis’ residence and, after announcing themselves, went into his home through an unlocked door, the Marshals Service said. Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver said he’s going to sell the teams, a week after the NBA suspended him for one year and fined him $10 million following an investigation that uncovered racist and sexist workplace conduct. A three-vehicle collision on a central Florida highway Wednesday morning resulted in one death and 16 injuries, authorities said. The crash occurred about 6:15 a.m. on State Route 60 in Osceola County, according to the Osceola County Fire Rescue and EMS and a department spokesperson. “The crash involved a semi, transit bus, and pickup truck. A highway crash in Florida on Sept. 21, 2022, resulted in one death and 14 injuries, most were not life-threatening, officials said. Sullivan said the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

Sherri Papini, the California woman who pleaded guilty to faking her own kidnapping and lying about it to the FBI, was sentenced Monday to 18 months in prison. Prosecutors recommended last week that Papini be sentenced to eight months in prison. U.S. District Judge William Shubb sentenced Papini to prison time along with 36 months supervised release. Papini, a mother of two from Redding, was arrested more than five years after she was reported missing in November 2016. The government said an eight-month sentence would discourage Papini from ever trying such a scheme again and dissuade others from committing fraud.
An asylum-seeker died by suicide in a New York City shelter on Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. “The thousands of asylum seekers we have seen arrive in our city came to this country seeking a better life. Sadly though, yesterday, an asylum seeker in one of our facilities took her own life,” Adams said in a statement. “Our hearts break for this young woman and any loved ones she may have, and we, as a city mourn her. “I encourage all asylum seekers who need mental health support to utilize these services, and anyone in our city struggling with anxiety, depression, or mental health challenges of any kind to call 888-NYC-WELL.
A Black woman from Michigan says she was racially discriminated against when three employees at a Fifth Third Bank told her a casino jackpot check she was trying to deposit was fraudulent, according to a recently filed federal lawsuit. Pugh’s attorney, Deborah Gordon, said Wednesday that the check was for about $12,000 after the casino deducted taxes from the $20,000 jackpot. Pugh, according to the lawsuit, was raised in Alabama during the Jim Crow era and retired from Detroit Public Schools after 36 years. Pugh ended up depositing the check at another corporate bank, Gordon said. And then they took her check,” Gordon said.
