Explainer: What's at stake in Telecom Italia grid deal?
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
TIM is selling NetCo, a venture comprising both TIM's domestic fixed-access network and international wholesale telecoms operator Sparkle. TIM's landline network covers nearly 89% of the country's households and its fibre cable stretches over 23 million kilometres across the country. Beyond TIM's grid, a second major network is being rolled out by Open Fiber, a company controlled by CDP and Australian investment group Macquarie. There had long been talks of trying to combine TIM's network with Open Fiber but competition concerns have hampered such a deal so far. With its 24% voting stake, Vivendi could throw a spanner in the works at any TIM shareholder meeting to vote on a deal or challenge it in the courts.

People attend a UAW rally to support striking workers outside an assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S., September 21, 2023. The UAW, which represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers, kicked off negotiations with the companies in July. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers in past years had gone on until the strike deadline and beyond. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike. The UAW is pushing automakers to eliminate the two-tier wage system under which new hires can earn far less than veterans.

People gather ahead of the "Festival of Fantasy" parade at the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom theme park in Orlando, Florida, U.S. July 30, 2022. REUTERS/Octavio Jones Acquire Licensing RightsSept 20 (Reuters) - Walt Disney's (DIS.N) $60 billion spending plan on parks and cruises to stay ahead of growing competition has worried some Wall Street analysts with its long road to payoff. "Expanding parks and cruises tends to be a multi year undertaking as a result of which, revenue and margin acceleration lags the investment cycle," Barclays analysts said. The bump in parks spending also follows a quiet period for the business during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, when the spread of COVID-19 forced park closures and hit attendance. That led Needham analysts to warn Disney could be basing its decision on "unsustainable and elevated profit margins."
