REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/File PhotoNEW DELHI, Dec 30 (Reuters) - India's New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV.NS) said on Friday its founders Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy had resigned as directors after billionaire Gautam Adani's conglomerate took majority control of the media company. Adani Enterprises Ltd (ADEL.NS), through subsidiaries RRPR Holding and Vishvapradhan Commercial, now owns 64.72% of NDTV, which runs three national channels. There are no other material reasons for my resignation," Prannoy Roy, one of India's best-known journalists, said in his letter to the company resigning as executive co-chairperson. Adani Group would "strengthen and invest in the NDTV newsroom to be a multi-faceted multi-media digital platform", the statement added.
Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was tossed in September after he served 23 years behind bars, has been hired by Georgetown University to work on prison reform. Syed's job as a program associate for Georgetown's Prisons and Justice Initiative is his first 9-to-5 office job, according to the university. Part of Syed’s job will include supporting Georgetown’s "Making an Exoneree" class, in which students re-investigate wrongful convictions, make documentaries about the cases and help free innocent people. In the year leading up to his release, Syed had taken part in Georgetown’s Bachelor of Liberal Arts program in prison. An attorney for Lee's family did not immediately respond to an inquiry Friday seeking comment about Syed's job with Georgetown.
The husband-and-wife team will sell a 27.26% stake in NDTV to Adani-owned entity AMG Media Network and retain a combined 5%, regulatory filings by NDTV showed on Friday. "The AMG Media Network, after the recent open offer, is now the single largest shareholder in NDTV. Consequently, with mutual agreement we have decided to divest most of our shares in NDTV to the AMG Media Network," the founders said in a statement. Ravish Kumar, a senior executive editor of NDTV, resigned soon after Adani acquired the entity backed by NDTV's founders. Founded in 1988 and owned by the husband-and-wife team, NDTV had previously said that the move by Adani "was executed without any input from, conversation with, or consent of the NDTV founders".

REUTERS/Adnan AbidiNEW DELHI, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Air pollution worsened in New Delhi on Monday to the "very poor" category after a few days of clear skies, as lower temperatures and calmer winds trapped pollutants. The air quality in the city of 20 million was "very poor" overall and sank to "severe" in some areas, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board. The air quality index hit 457 in the Anand Vihar locality - nine times the "good" level. The government's System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research blamed the foul air on a drop in temperatures and reduced wind speeds. Delhi's temperature has been hovering around a low of 6 degrees Celsius (42.8 Fahrenheit) for the past few days, lower than the normal minimum of 8 degrees Celsius for this time of year.

Demonstrators waved Iraqi national flags in Baghdad on Tuesday during a protest against the new government led by Mohammed al-Sudani. BAGHDAD—Iraq’s Parliament chose Mohammed al-Sudani as prime minister Thursday, aligning Baghdad more closely with Iran amid deep public unrest over rampant corruption and a lack of jobs. Mr. Sudani and his cabinet were approved under tight security, breaking a yearlong impasse between a bloc of Iranian-backed factions that endorsed him and supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr, a Shia cleric whose followers delayed the formation of the government for months with violent protests and gunbattles outside the parliament building. Mr. Sadr’s faction won the most votes in last October’s election, but he and his bloc withdrew from the political process after he failed to form a coalition.

Officials escort Adnan Syed from the courthouse following the completion of the first day of hearings for a retrial in Baltimore on Feb. 3, 2016. “It was a strategy to inflame racial and religious prejudice against a brown Muslim man,” Raju said. “This is something that has been used to justify colonialism going way back … This notion that men of color, men coming from Asian, South Asian cultures, are inherently misogynistic towards their women, which justifies the intervention that needs to occur,” Selod said. California passed the Racial Justice Act in 2020, empowering defenders to challenge racial disparities in arrests, charging and sentences. If mirrored around the country, this law has the potential to protect other young people of color who might have been in the same position as Syed, Raju said.
“Serial” leapt up podcast charts a day after a judge vacated the murder conviction of Adnan Syed , whose case was the center of the show’s first season eight years ago. “Serial” became a cultural phenomenon when it was released in 2014, helping popularize podcasts and leading to a wave of other true-crime shows like it. New York Times Co. bought the production company behind “Serial” in 2020.
In a new episode of “Serial” released Tuesday, host Sarah Koenig noted that most or all of the evidence cited in prosecutors’ motion to overturn the conviction was available since 1999. Adnan Syed, center, leaves the courthouse after being released from prison in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 19, 2022. In the “Serial” episode posted Tuesday, Koenig broke down prosecutors’ motion and described how some evidence they cited was featured in the podcast, while other evidence — including the evidence of other possible suspects — became public more recently. Other supporting evidence on the unreliability of a key witness and questions about cellphone data was previously featured on “Serial,” Koenig said. In the years since “Serial” chronicled Syed’s case and transformed the true-crime genre, a number of breakthroughs have come in other cases examined by like-minded podcasters.
Syed was convicted of killing 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, whose body was found buried in Baltimore’s Leakin Park in 1999. Family attorney Steve Kelly said Lee's survivors do not believe Baltimore prosecutors will opt for another trial. “The family has very little hope at this point, they are not hopeful that anybody will ever face justice for Hae’s murder,” Kelly said Tuesday. Mosby's hedged comments belie court action moments earlier when her own prosecutor eviscerated the state's successful murder case against Syed. In her arguments in court Monday, prosecutor Becky Feldman attacked virtually every crucial point of the state's case against Syed.
