And they were looking for a place to play soccer – an almost universal cornerstone of their daily routines back home. As of Tuesday, at least three dozen cases related to voter rolls and their maintenance are pending in 19 states, according to the liberal-leaning Democracy Docket, which tracks election litigation. The right-wing effort to purge voter rolls has largely centered around claims that noncitizens are casting illegal votes in favor of Democrats. “There’s always been some litigation about voter rolls and list maintenance. Reviewing voter rolls is a regular practice for states, and despite the 90-day quiet period, the NVRA does allow individuals to ask to be taken off lists close to an election. The federal law exempts some states if they allow voter registration on Election Day at polling centers where federal elections are conducted.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center will stop accepting unclaimed bodies following an NBC News investigation that documented how the Fort Worth program cut up and leased out the remains of poor people for training and research without consent from the dead or their families. The move was prompted, she said, by documents uncovered while responding to reporters’ public-records requests about the center’s Willed Body Program. Among the revelations were “a lack of sufficient controls and oversight” of how outside companies handled and used corpses provided by the Health Science Center. Trent-Adams said leadership had been unaware that the body program was routinely shipping unclaimed remains — including those of U.S. military veterans — across state lines. The NBC News investigation published Monday found the center had received about 2,350 unclaimed bodies from Tarrant and Dallas counties in the past five years.

Two former high-ranking New York City Fire Department chiefs were indicted by federal prosecutors Monday on charges of pocketing bribes to expedite fire safety reviews. The charges come as Mayor Eric Adams' administration has been under scrutiny from prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan. "New Yorkers deserve better," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said at a press conference where he announced the charges against the former chiefs, Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco. Jocelyn Strauber, head of the New York City Department of Investigation, told reporters all the sites have since been re-inspected. Both are no longer with the FDNY — Saccavino retired in March and Cordasco retired in June.

Four people were wounded at a Brooklyn train station Sunday when police officers shot at a man threatening them with a knife, authorities said. The bloody confrontation began when two officers confronted a man who entered the station without paying his fare, officials said. They followed him on to a train that had pulled into the station and fired two Tasers, but neither incapacitated the man, Maddrey said. Mayor Eric Adams visited the wounded officer in the hospital Sunday, ahead of a news conference addressing the shooting. In 2019, NYPD officers accidentally shot and killed two fellow officers while confronting crime suspects in separate on-duty incidents.

New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban resigned Thursday amid a federal investigation into the department's nightclub enforcement, according to sources familiar with the matter. Caban, the city’s first Latino police commissioner, took over the department in July 2023 after being tapped by Mayor Eric Adams, whose administration is the target of multiple federal investigations. Adams, speaking in an address later Thursday, announced that he was appointing Thomas Donlon as the interim police commissioner. With the average age of team owners rising, and team values skyrocketing into the billions, owners and leagues are increasingly focused on how to ensure smooth ownership transitions to the next generation of buyers. Succession and taxes have become especially important in the National Football League, where the average age of team owners is now over 72 and team values are all surging. The average NFL team is now worth $6.49 billion, and no team is valued at less than $5.25 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations.
