U.S. President Joe Biden steps from Air Force One upon his arrival in New York, U.S. September 17, 2023. Biden, a Democrat, has made rallying U.S. allies to support Ukraine a leading component of U.S. foreign policy, arguing the world must send a clear signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will not be able to outlast the West. But Biden has faced criticism from some Republicans who want the United States to spend less money there. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to visit Biden at the White House on Thursday and meet with some congressional leaders as well. After his speech, Biden will sit down with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to discuss world hotspots.

“In the middle of a war zone, Joe Biden showed the world what America is made of. Biden’s current political weaknesses do not go unnoticed by fellow world leaders, most of them politicians themselves who are highly attuned to the electoral landscape. Governments around the world keep close tabs on the American election and the legal dramas currently surrounding the former president. Inside the G20 summit hall in New Delhi, the topic of the forthcoming American election did arise among world leaders, according to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Amid the near-constant questions about Biden’s age, it was perhaps welcome when Vietnam’s General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng offered the president a compliment.

In three days of diplomacy in Asia, President Biden rallied world leaders to help finance poor nations, fortified the coalition backing Ukraine and struck a deal with Vietnam to counter Chinese aggression. But even before he left Vietnam on Sunday night, the president was hammered with a very different narrative. By Monday morning, as the 80-year-old president was flying home on Air Force One, conservative media outlets had seized on his end-of-trip news conference as the latest evidence that he is too old to perform on the world stage. It is a pattern that infuriates the White House, where Mr. Biden’s top aides believe that stories about the president’s age and health are stoked by his enemies in an effort to undermine his accomplishments.

Mr. Biden’s trip to Hanoi, which includes a news conference scheduled for Sunday, is centered on signing a “comprehensive strategic partnership” with the Vietnamese, a symbolic but significant status long coveted by the United States. Since taking office, Mr. Biden has sought to enhance relations with several Southeast Asian nations because of their tactical value as a bulwark against rising Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific region. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken accompanied Mr. Biden to the presidential palace, where honor guards marched to martial music before the meeting with Mr. Trong began. Earlier on Sunday, Mr. Biden concluded an eventful trip to New Delhi by joining the Group of 20 leaders at the memorial of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the champion of nonviolent struggle. The G20 summit managed to produce a surprise consensus declaration before the end of its first day.

U.S. President Joe Biden gestures as he boards Air Force One to depart for Washington from Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, U.S. March 5, 2023. The officials said Biden was convinced by the head of Space Command, Gen. James Dickinson, who argued that moving his headquarters now would jeopardize military readiness. Formally created in August 2019, the command was temporarily based in Colorado, and Air Force and Space Force leaders initially recommended it stay there. And Colorado Springs is also home to the Air Force Academy, which now graduates Space Force guardians, and more than 24 military space missions, including three Space Force bases. According to officials, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, who ordered his own review of the matter, leaned toward Huntsville, while Dickinson was staunchly in favor of staying put.
