Sam Altman is aiming to raise as much as $7 trillion to significantly increase the world's supply of semiconductor chips, The Wall Street Journal reported. The OpenAI chief has been talking to prospective investors including the United Arab Emirates government about his proposals to help solve the global chip shortage. One potential backer Altman's been courting is the UAE's Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al Nahyan, with the pair meeting recently, the Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. Some of Amazon's spending is likely to go toward its custom AI chips, known as Trainium and Inferentia. But the Seattle-based tech giant also buys Nvidia chips. On Thursday's post-earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy said AWS offers the "most expansive collection of compute instances with Nvidia chips." Alphabet's spending on AI chips has typically been split between its custom chips designed in partnership with Broadcom, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and Nvidia's offerings. Including networking products that stitch together parts of the data center, about 15% of Broadcom's semiconductor revenue was tied to generative AI spending in fiscal 2023.

Nvidia's blowout performance last year has helped cement the firm as a rising star in corporate venturing, with the chipmaker's startup investments having nearly tripled in 2023, S&P Global reported on Tuesday. Pullbacks also extend to other firms that are historically leaders in corporate venturing, such as SoftBank Group and Tencent Holdings. The total value of rounds surpasses $5 billion, S&P Global cited. The firm's 2022 termination of a deal to acquire Arm Holdings suggests that bigger M&A deals are off the table, S&P Global said. UBS is getting more bullish on the outlook for artificial intelligence and bracing for another prosperous year for the "tech theme of the decade." The firm lifted its revenue forecast for AI by 40%. In comparison, it took the smart devices industry more than 10 years for its revenues to grow by 15 times. "Meanwhile, software, with broadening AI demand trends from applications and models, is a defensive play, thanks to its strong recurring revenue base." Broadcom shares jumped 9% Monday after Citigroup resumed its coverage of the stock with a buy rating and updated its price target to $1,100. Broadcom bought VMware in November to bolster its cloud technology infrastructure that it sells to other businesses. Citigroup's bullishness is largely because it believes Broadcom is well-positioned to earn money from the AI boom. "We expect sales from AI infrastructure to double from $4 billion in F23 (11% of F23 sales) to over $8 billion in F24 (17% in F24 sales)," the analysts wrote. Broadcom reported solid earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter last Thursday, which gave its shares a 2.4% boost to $944.30 at Friday's market close.

At the same time legacy companies from John Deere to accounting firm PwC played up their AI bona fides to capitalize on the hype. 2023 was a tumultuous year for the venture capital industry. This year, Business Insider asked the most important VCs across the US to name the most promising VCs in their cities. Business Insider also asked the general public and last year's rising stars who they thought should make the cut. And just like last year, more of this year's rising stars are women than men, indicating that more women are being brought into the pipeline of the traditionally male-dominated venture capital industry. Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Microsoft President Brad Smith attend the AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes, Britain, November 2, 2023. Britain, where the economy is forecast to be sluggish in the coming years, is pushing for private investment to help fund new infrastructure, particularly in growth industries like AI. "Today's announcement is a turning point for the future of AI infrastructure and development in the UK," Sunak said in a statement on Thursday. Since then, the UK regulator waved through a restructured version of Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard , putting Britain back in Microsoft's favour. The investment includes a training plan to help ensure Britons have the skills they need to build and work with AI, it added.

Bottom line This was a very strong quarter, with almost nothing to nitpick. This year's rapid Data Center sales growth we've seen has been driven largely by cloud providers and enterprises. Sales to China and other impacted regions have, in the past few quarters, accounted for 20% to 25% of Data Center sales. However, the team added that they "believe the decline will be more than offset by strong growth in other regions." Guidance Looking ahead to Nvidia's fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, we once again got far stronger guidance than Wall Street was modeling.
