Bill Gates is constantly asked for his thoughts on big topics like artificial intelligence, climate change and pandemics. Gates, 69, told LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman during an episode of the "Possible" podcast that published on Wednesday. — even though those types of topics aren't always top of mind for most Americans. It's "one of the most important questions ever," Gates wrote, adding: "It is hard to think of a measure of how a society is doing that reveals more than whether it is protecting its children, and especially its most vulnerable children," Gates wrote. Malnutrition probably isn't a top concern for the average person living in an area that's relatively unaffected by the issue, Gates told Hoffman.

This is something I've been looking forward to as I prepare to run my first marathon on November 3. So I consulted Jena Brown, a sports dietitian specializing in endurance racing, who reviewed my plan for the week and suggested improvements. She told me I should aim for roughly 8-12 grams of carbs a day per kilogram of my body weight. After my shorter runs this week, I got a berry smoothie with 55g carbs and 27g protein (from protein powder). Cut down on fiber, fat, and spiceI used regular, refined flour pasta and blended pesto with cottage cheese to make the sauce.

Daniel Penny went “way too far” when he put Jordan Neely in a chokehold on a New York City subway train last year until he died, a Manhattan prosecutor told jurors Friday during opening statements in Penny’s manslaughter trial. “A chokehold is only permitted when it’s absolutely necessary and only for as long as it’s absolutely necessary,” Yoran told jurors. He talked about being hungry, thirsty and made threats about hurting people and wanting to go back to jail, which frightened people on the train, Yoran said. In addition to opening statements, jurors on Friday heard from three police officers who had responded to the subway car. Kenniff said jurors also would hear during the trial from subway riders who had feared for their lives.

But it isn’t always a deterrent – Combs’ former girlfriend Cassie Ventura filed a lawsuit accusing Combs of abuse last November. Judges weigh the John or Jane Does’ privacy rights against the Constitution’s presumption of open courts and the defendant’s rights to defend themselves. It is also usually permitted when a John or Jane Doe can establish with medical documentation that they will suffer harm. A New York state judge this week ordered hearings to consider whether to allow numerous John Doe lawsuit against Combs to proceed anonymously. Andrew Cuomo to the Department of Justice, alleging he made “criminally false statements” during closed-door testimony in June 2024. In the Republican-led committee’s referral, it says Cuomo “knowingly and willfully made materially false statements” to the panel during its investigation into the New York’s Covid-19 response. Cuomo also denied having discussions about the July 6 report being peer reviewed, according to the panel, which said documents show otherwise. The panel said Cuomo was not under oath during his testimony but was required to answer questions truthfully to Congress. Cuomo’s plan to centralize the pandemic response in the governor’s office also has received criticism, including from an independent report commissioned by his successor, Gov.

The one thing spookier than a bad first date is seeing your phone light up with a text asking for a second. The "easy way out" of delivering the uncomfortable news that you don't want to meet up again is to not respond, also known as ghosting, says Grace Lee, a New York City-based dating coach and founder of A Good First Date. But if the person took the time to see you in person, they probably deserve an actual response. "If someone outright asks you if you want to go on a second date and you don't want to I think ghosting is the worst way to respond because the other person has really put themselves out there," she says. Here's what to say if you aren't interested in continuing a courtship.

Starbucks will stop charging extra for dairy substitutes

Starbucks said Wednesday that it will remove the surcharge for dairy substitutes, saving some U.S. customers more than 10% on their drinks. Substituting a nondairy milk is the second-most requested customization from customers, trailing only adding a shot of espresso, according to Starbucks. Currently, Starbucks customers can already add up to 4 ounces of a dairy substitute at no extra charge to hot or iced brewed coffee or tea, cold brew and Americano drinks. Starbucks first started serving nondairy milk in 1997, when it added soy milk to menus. In March, three lactose-intolerant women sued Starbucks in federal court, alleging that the surcharge discriminated against customers with allergies.

Silver told Fortt that his current model shows the odds favoring Trump, who holds a 55% to 45% win probability advantage over Harris. Most people no longer even have the landline phones which past election cycle polling history relied on. Why the betting markets may be all 'vibe and chatter'The betting markets show a much bigger edge for Trump, with major wagers placed on Polymarket, Robinhood jumping into the action, and presidential election contracts surging in popularity. Critics have raised concerns that the election betting markets are potentially being manipulated. But Silver, who is a consultant to one of the leading prediction markets, Polymarket, says he wouldn't pay much attention to the betting markets data right now, as they simply may not be very accurate at this moment in the election cycle.

A new piece of music believed to be penned by Frédéric Chopin has been discovered in the vault of a New York museum nearly 200 years after it was first written. McClellan told the BBC he was initially unsure if the piece was actually Chopin’s after photographing the score and playing it himself on his keyboard at home. It’s beautiful.”“This is not the most complicated music by Chopin but it is one of the most authentic Chopin styles that you can imagine,” Lang Lang told the newspaper. Chopin, who wrote mostly piano solos, was born to a French father and Polish mother near Warsaw in 1810. According to the New York Times, experts say Chopin is believed to have written around 28 waltzes before he died aged 39 in France in 1849.
