AdvertisementI visited an Apple store to get a rundown of all that Apple Intelligence is offering. I visited an Apple store on Thursday morning for an Apple Intelligence tutorial. Jordan Hart/BII was impressed by Math Notes when Apple first demonstrated it at WWDC, but it was unclear which phase of Apple Intelligence it would be included in. There's also the Tips appIf you can't make it to an Apple store for a rundown, there's always the Tips app with a section on Apple Intelligence. I went through it while first exploring Apple Intelligence, but the hands-on demo in a store gave me some more details.

CNN —The discovery of a severed horse head, and a cow quartered with its bloodied dead calf on top, have rattled a Sicilian town, with authorities treating the incident as a mafia threat. “I can’t comprehend such barbarity,” she told local media outlets. It is a tactic that has been used by the notorious Sicilian Cosa Nostra crime syndicate for decades. Organized crime in Sicily has been a problem since the 19th century when the Cosa Nostra was first identified. In 2023, Matteo Messina Denaro, a Sicilan Cosa Nostra mafia boss who had been on the run for 30 years was captured while seeking cancer treatment in Palermo, underscoring the level of complicity that continues to protect and enable criminal enterprises.

(CNN) — Top telecom executives met with US national security officials at the White House on Friday as concerns mount over a long-running Chinese cyber-espionage campaign that has targeted some of the most senior US political figures in the country. The meetings were a chance for telecom executives to advise the government on how it could boost its defenses against sophisticated hacks, according to the White House. The hack is shaping up to be one of the biggest cyber and national security challenges facing the incoming Trump administration. But the full scope of the hack, who it affects and its impact on national security are still being investigated. US officials and private cyber experts are keeping a running tally of the number of telecom firms breached.

Currently, individuals and married couples can gift or bequeath $13.61 million and $27.22 million, respectively, before a 40% federal estate tax kicks in. AdvertisementThe heirs don't own the trust assets but rather have lifetime rights to the trust's income and real estate. Any payout is also protected from estate taxes, even if the insured's estate and death benefit exceed the exemption. When the children inherit the assets, the federal estate tax doesn't kick in as long as the grandparents' estate does not exceed $27.22 million.

But first came an invitation to have dinner in the suburbs with a senior official from their party in the Indian state of Maharashtra. They would share a car ride, and Mr. Deshmukh could catch the train from there. That, Mr. Deshmukh said, is when he realized he was being kidnapped. Mr. Deshmukh had become a pawn in what is known as “resort politics,” a longstanding practice unique to India’s rough-and-tumble democracy. To ensure that they would stick to the plan, the lawmakers were moved to other states and isolated in luxury resorts.

BTC.CM= YTD mountain Bitcoin, YTD Every bullish argument for bitcoin comes down to "More people will soon have more ways to buy more of it." I've tracked the interplay between bitcoin and Nvidia shares for a while. The market's immediate response was simply to allow Nvidia to hold onto the $2.3 trillion in market value it's added this year, but not to pile on more. Meaning the current pace of new money entering these funds is not as heavy relative to total market value as it was nearly four years ago.

CNN —The McRib is returning to menus this holiday season – but don’t get used to it. Essentially, consumers don’t know when it will show up next — and that element of surprise also drives demand. “It creates this sense of urgency that you have to get it now because you don’t know when it’s coming back. You don’t know if it’s coming back,” Henkes said. It’s so popular that the McDonald’s website listed “Why isn’t the McRib sold year-round?” as a frequently asked question.

CNN —President Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russia will continue to test and start mass-producing the hypersonic ballistic missile that it fired at Ukraine Thursday. The firing of the missile came after the White House authorized Ukraine to fire its long-range missiles into Russia. In a televised meeting with the leadership of Russia’s defense ministry, Putin claimed the missile could not be intercepted by air defenses and said Russia will begin serial production of the new weapon. Putin added Russia was developing “several similar systems” for further testing. Putin’s comments come a day after Russia fired the “Oreshnik” missile – which contains multiple warheads – at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

London's historic art scene is getting a tech upgrade
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The United Kingdom's historic art scene has embraced technology such as artificial intelligence, as it evolves to compete with growing markets such as China. While the United States and China hold the number one and two spots respectively, the U.K.'s contribution to the art market is nothing to be sniffed at – holding 17% of the global share, according to the Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report. London is widely regarded as the art hub of Europe, and its biggest art fair, Frieze, boasted 90,000 visitors in 2024. Within the art world, it's been sort of bubbling away, burning away for a while, and it's suddenly caught fire," said Henry Highley, Head of European Private Sales for Phillips. Watch the video above for an up-close look at some of the art breaking barriers on London's art scene.

He promised salvation for a country “in ruins” — an end to immigration, a civil service stripped of entrenched left-wing opponents, a judiciary purged of meddlesome judges and a news media giving voice to the people instead of elites. Those campaign pledges — similar to ones made by Donald J. Trump during his successful bid for a second term as U.S. president — helped bring Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his nationalist Law and Justice party to power in Poland in 2015. More than a year after an election that ended that party’s eight-year rule, its liberal successors are still struggling to undo the “new state apparatus” that Mr. Kaczynski helped put in place and that legal experts say seriously damaged Poland’s legal system. Unwinding the legacy of populist conservative rule “takes longer than you expect,” said Adam Bodnar, the justice minister at the forefront of the new government’s efforts to reverse Poland’s retreat from liberal democracy under Law and Justice.

Forcing the issue is the end of many of the tax cuts Republicans passed in 2017. Republicans want to protect their handiwork and extend the tax cuts before they lapse. By conventional budget rules in Washington, doing so would amount to a tax cut — and an expensive one at that. Republicans are struggling to come up with other tax increases or spending cuts to cover that cost. So maybe it is not a surprise that some of them are starting to advance an alternative theory of the case: that continuing existing tax cuts actually costs nothing.

The Latest FAFSA Form is Available. It Works Fine.
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( Ron Lieber | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Last year, in a fit of masochism, I tried to become the first person in the United States to fill out a FAFSA (short for Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at the precise moment the Department of Education unveiled a long-delayed overhaul. I failed in my New Year’s Eve quest because the site wasn’t working, and the experience was a harbinger for millions of others. The rollout of the new FAFSA was one of the most epic digital fiascos of our time, right up there with the Obamacare website’s disastrous debut and the Equifax breach. At one school’s FAFSA completion event, only 20 percent of students finished. This week, the department tried again, opening the gates to the FAFSA website after months of additional revisions and multiple rounds of beta testing.

That is a big blow to the idea of “Bidenomics,” of which Mr. Bernstein was a leading evangelist and architect. The U.S. economy recovered from the pandemic with greater strength than any of its peers. Unemployment stayed below 4 percent for the longest stretch since the 1960s, and remains low. Several prominent economists, peers of Mr. Bernstein’s, argue that the administration’s robust fiscal response caused the inflation. And other issues of affordability — especially housing — have sapped the optimism of many households in the last couple of years.
