CNN —Britain’s governing Conservative Party suffered heavy losses in local elections, a sign that they could be in real trouble when the country holds a general election at some point later this year. It also means that if a general election were held tomorrow, the opposition Labour Party would almost certainly win power. What these results don’t tell us is when the general election will take place. Conservatives are divided on when they think Sunak should bite the ballot bullet. Others think Sunak should look toward the end of the year, as it allows the most time for things to improve.

Johnson & Johnson said on Wednesday that it would ask tens of thousands of people suing the company over claims that its talcum powder products caused their cancer to approve a new $6.5 billion settlement, its third attempt to resolve the lawsuits. The proposal would settle nearly all current and future claims that its talcum powder products caused ovarian cancer, the company said. Judges have rejected the two previous attempts, on the grounds that bankruptcy court isn’t the right venue for them. Representatives for Johnson & Johnson declined to comment beyond its announcement. The company has long denied those claims, but has in recent years stopped selling talc-based baby powder worldwide.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said on Wednesday that she would demand a vote next week on a motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson, moving forward in the face of all but certain defeat with a second attempt during this Congress to depose a Republican speaker. In a morning news conference at the Capitol, Ms. Greene excoriated Mr. Johnson for working with Democrats to push through major legislation and said it was time for lawmakers to go on the record about where they stood on his speakership. “I think every member of Congress needs to take that vote and let the chips fall where they may,” Ms. Greene said. “And so next week, I am going to be calling this motion to vacate.”The move comes just over a week after Mr. Johnson pushed through a long-stalled $95 billion package to aid Israel, Ukraine and other U.S. allies over the objections of Ms. Greene and other right-wing Republicans who staunchly opposed sending additional aid to Kyiv.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who elevated Ms. Greene and turned her into one of his top allies during his abbreviated time in the top post, never criticized her publicly. But privately, he called Mr. Johnson and offered to intervene with her on his behalf, according to people knowledgeable about the exchange. Ms. Greene could not be controlled — even if her campaign against the speaker has left her isolated within her party. Mr. Jeffries, she said, had embraced Mr. Johnson with “a warm hug and a big, wet, sloppy kiss,” making them the joint leaders of what she refers to disdainfully as the “uniparty.”She did so knowing that her effort to depose Mr. Johnson was all but certain to fail. But Ms. Greene has never abided by the conventional rules of politics, where a loss on the House floor is considered a major defeat.

When students took over Hamilton Hall at Columbia University in April 1968, a young Joe Biden was studying law 250 miles away, just weeks from graduation. Protests and chanting and tie-dye shirts were not his style. “I was in law school,” he later recalled. Having traded up from sports coats in the Syracuse University law school library to suit coats in the Oval Office, however, Mr. Biden cannot simply shrug off the uproar on American college campuses as he once could. Mr. Biden has sought to walk a careful line in recent days as protests have mushroomed and in some cases led to suspensions and arrests.

House Democrats said on Tuesday that they would join with the G.O.P. to kill an effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson if far-right House Republicans forced a vote to remove him from his post after he allowed a foreign aid package including assistance to Ukraine to be approved. In a joint statement after a closed-door party meeting, the three top Democrats said they would side with Republicans supportive of Mr. Johnson and vote to table any motion to vacate him from the speaker’s chair, blocking it from coming up. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, has filed such a measure and threatened to call a snap vote on it, a threat she renewed on Tuesday after Democrats made clear their intentions. “At this moment, upon completion of our national security work, the time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Pro-Putin Republican obstruction,” the Democratic leaders said in a joint statement.

When Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, was in Munich in mid-February for the annual international security conference, Representative Michael R. Turner, the Ohio Republican and chairman of the Intelligence Committee, quietly sought him out with a request. Mr. Turner, according to those familiar with the private conversation, told Mr. Jeffries that he was committed to funding Ukraine’s war effort and believed that Speaker Mike Johnson would ultimately put an aid package on the floor, in defiance of right-wing Republicans opposed to doing so. Mr. Jeffries said he would take the idea under advisement. About 10 days later, after a Feb. 27 Oval Office session with President Biden and congressional leaders, Mr. Jeffries made his move. At a luncheon the next day at the Washington bureau of The New York Times, Mr. Jeffries responded to a question that he believed “a reasonable number” of Democrats would bail out Mr. Johnson if he put the aid package to a vote and faced ouster because of it.

“Well, House Speaker Mike Johnson crashed Hamas’s spring break at Columbia today.”That quip came from the Fox News host Jesse Watters, who was interviewing Mr. Johnson on his prime-time show Wednesday. In response to a standoff between student protesters and the university’s president, Mr. Johnson had visited Columbia University’s campus, where students had set up encampments in solidarity with Palestinians. “So many of them, Jesse, don’t know what the heck they’re talking about,” Mr. Johnson said. Mr. Johnson’s appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime” embodied the chiding and often adversarial tone of conservative media toward the latest wave of protests on college campuses over Israel’s campaign in Gaza. “There’s a difference between educated people and smart people,” Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and Fox News host, said on the network Tuesday.

This week’s rapid spread of college campus encampments meant to protest the war has ratcheted up the pressure on the US over its support for Israel. Second gentleman Doug Emhoff spoke by phone with two Jewish leaders on campus, a White House official said, to discuss the immediate need to address antisemitism on college campuses. Despite being just miles from Columbia and the most tense scenes of the protests, Biden will not be making a visit to campus as he holds events in the New York area Friday. The White House must by May 8 certify whether Israel is complying. And while Sanders sought assurances from Biden on how he was approaching the situation, the president remained characteristically diplomatic, Shakir, the Sanders adviser said.

The US Supreme Court, after refusing to hear the claim on an expedited basis, took up the case after a lower court tore Trump’s immunity claim to shreds. We asked for your questions about the immunity claim, some of which I’ve tried to answer below with help from CNN’s reporting and Supreme Court reporters. When Smith asked justices to expedite the case and consider Trump’s immunity claim before an appeals court, they declined. If Trump’s immunity claim is upheld by the Supreme Court, what can anybody or any government body do to challenge the decision? Senator Mitch McConnell does not give much away even in the most private of settings. “I wasn’t trying to convince Johnson of anything other than we had a time problem,” Mr. McConnell said in an interview on Tuesday, recounting the White House meeting and his message that help for Ukraine could not wait for Mr. Johnson’s political problems to sort themselves out. “I didn’t think we had time to fool around.”Mr. McConnell did not get immediate results. It took almost two more months and some legislative circuity. But Mr. Johnson finally acted last week and the House sent the aid package to the Senate, which followed suit on Tuesday night in overwhelmingly approving more than $60 billion in assistance for beleaguered Ukraine after months of delay and political strife.

Dr. Shafik herself was preparing to confer with the university senate, which could censure her as soon as Friday. On Monday, police were called in to make dozens of arrests at Yale and New York University. Mr. Johnson’s visit to campus will not include a meeting with Dr. Shafik. The university senate could vote on a resolution to censure Dr. Shafik as soon as Friday — not long after the 48-hour negotiation period concludes. By calling in the police anyway, the resolution said, Dr. Shafik had endangered both the welfare and the futures of the arrested students.

The aid package is narrowerBiden's 2020 campaign promise to erase student debt was thwarted at the Supreme Court in June. Biden had tried to forgive the debt of nearly all 40 million federal student loan borrowers, with many people getting up to $20,000 in cancellation. As a result, for critics of broad student loan forgiveness, Biden's new plan looks a great deal like his first. Biden's first forgiveness plan was based on the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act, or HEROES Act, of 2003.

To the Editor:Re “$95 Billion Bill for Three Allies Passes in House” (front page, April 21):Speaker Mike Johnson did the right thing! He acted as a statesman, putting country over party, and acknowledging that this act of bipartisan leadership could cost him his job. Perhaps we can make bipartisanship something to be applauded and not punished. To the Editor:As an independent, I vowed never again to vote for a Republican after the chaos of the past few years in Congress and the spinelessness of the Republican Party in following the lead of a misguided former president. Then came a surprise from Mike Johnson that has restored my faith in my fellow citizens.

Nancy Pelosi offered muted praise for Speaker Mike Johnson. Pelosi had a famously fraught relationship with fellow Californian and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The expectation is that if Greene follows through with her threat to force a vote on Johnson, standing Democrats will help protect him.

Gavin Newsom of California ordinarily have little in common. One is a conservative think tank in Arizona, the other a Democrat leading one of the nation’s most liberal states. On Monday, the Supreme Court will consider an Oregon case that could reshape homelessness policy nationally. On its face, The City of Grants Pass v. Johnson asks how far cities can constitutionally go to restrict sleeping and camping in parks and on sidewalks. Advocates for homeless people, the American Psychiatric Association and several left-leaning states, including New York, Illinois and Minnesota, argue that criminalizing homelessness only worsens the problem.

On Saturday, the House of Representatives approved the most consequential legislation of this Congress, a foreign aid package for American allies. More Democrats than Republicans voted in favor of the measure that allowed the package to pass. The speaker, Mike Johnson, holds his role only because a few hard-line Republicans ousted the previous speaker for being too dismissive of their demands. For all its rank partisanship, the House right now is functionally and uneasily governed by a bipartisan group of Republicans and Democrats. Instead, a coalition has emerged that is willing to do what is necessary to save the House from itself.
