New York City is experiencing a rapidly worsening affordability crisis, according to a major new report. Half of all of New York City's working-age households can't afford their basic needs, the study found. Households in all parts of the city need to make at least $100,000 to afford the cost of living, according to the TCL. New York City has failed to build enough affordable housing and keep costs reasonable for its diverse array of residents, experts say. And city's worsening affordability crisis is driving some out.
The creepy secret behind online therapy

Crisis Text Line, now in its 10th year of operations, uses artificial intelligence to respond to people experiencing emotional abuse, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. 'The vast majority of mental-health apps are exceptionally creepy'BetterHelp, a poster child of online therapy founded in 2013, calls itself "the world's largest therapy platform" and says it has over 2 million users. One of the first popular mental-health apps, PTSD Coach, was launched by the US Department of Veteran Affairs in 2011. But for mental-health companies these practices can undermine the very foundations of mental-health care: dignity, trust, and psychological safety. As Crisis Text Line wrote on its website extolling its deal with Loris: "Why sell T-shirts when you can sell what your organization does best?"
Netflix announced it planned to start rolling out paid account sharing later this quarter. The company has already cracked down on password sharing in Canada and some European and Latin American countries. You may have less than 2 months left to share your Netflix password with people outside your home before the company starts charging for the privilege. That means that by the end of June, you may be unable to give out your Netflix password for free. The streaming giant said account sharing affected over 100 million households, which "undermines our long-term ability to invest in and improve Netflix."

The engineers had to pay careful attention to the numerous rules and guidelines set forth by the Guinness World Record Team. I didn’t think we could get useful data from a simulation on a paper airplane. The Guinness paper plane record for duration of flight is currently 29.2 seconds. From origami enthusiasts to aerospace engineersRuble and Jensen began their paper plane engineering careers while in middle school, participating in paper airplane events held at Boeing. For those looking to create their own record-breaking paper plane design, the feat is not impossible, but may take some time (and skill).

Leading the way in growth are tech stocks like Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Tesla (TSLA) and Meta (FB). That’s been a boon to large cap tech stocks that are more sensitive to interest rates because they tend to borrow more than established companies and rely more on the prospect of future earnings. But it also means that the current market rally is thin, as the major indexes outperform the average stock. Strong outperformance from the largest stocks often power indexes to rise, said Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Schwab, in a note Tuesday. But healthy markets should be characterized by greater participation of the “soldiers” — the rest of the stocks, she said.
New data from Pitney Bowes shows Amazon was the only major carrier that didn't see a drop in 2022. In 2022, delivery companies shipped 21.2 billion packages — 2.2% less than in 2021 but more than 37% higher than 2019. When retailers have less package volume to spread around, the big guys get persuasive with their discounts, Ramachandran said. But in terms of package volume, it was the only major carrier to hold its 2021 package volume in 2022. Like UPS and FedEx, Amazon may also strategically choose not to grow package volume, but not by turning down customers.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Wednesday urged the National Transportation Safety Board to broaden its rail safety investigation beyond Norfolk Southern to other large rail companies after last month's derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Hours before Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw appeared at a congressional hearing last week about the Ohio derailment, another of the company's trains derailed in Calhoun County, Alabama. It was the third derailment involving Norfolk Southern since last month. They can tell us how many fatalities there were — 2,768 — but not why or if company policies could have prevented them." The Ohio Attorney General's office on Tuesday sued Norfolk Southern in federal court, alleging it was negligent for causing the derailment.
One avenue is examining the differences between the forecasts of mathematical models and the collective choices of fans. For example, fans are much more likely to have Kansas and Alabama in the Final Four than the experts. The table below shows an aggregate view of the difference between the public’s picks and those of forecasting models. But if you pick the same teams as everyone else, your bracket will look the same, too, something you should consider. There is no guarantee that this approach will work, of course, and part of the draw of the N.C.A.A.

"The Holme," a 205-year-old mansion in Regent's Park in London, is reportedly for sale. The agents handling the sale are reportedly asking for up to 250 million British pounds, about $300 million. If it reaches the reported asking price, the property would become the most expensive ever sold in the United Kingdom. Another massive mansion held the previous UK record — 2-8 Rutland Gate, which overlooks London's Hyde Park was sold in 2020 for £210 million, or $232 million. Minneapolis CNN —Americans continued to add to their debt at the end of last year — and grew their credit card balances at record rates, according to data released Thursday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Total US household debt hit $16.9 trillion during the fourth quarter, an increase of $394 billion, or 2.4%, from the prior three-month period, according to the Fed’s latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. While the lion’s share of the debt is attributable to mortgages, the report showed that not only are credit card balances swelling at record levels, delinquencies are on the rise as well. Credit card balances increased nearly 6.6% to $986 billion during the quarter, the highest quarterly growth on record, according to New York Fed data that goes back to 1999. And as debt is growing, Americans are having more trouble meeting payment obligations: The share of current debt becoming delinquent increased across nearly all debt types, with credit cards and auto loans showing delinquency transparency rates of 0.6 and 0.4 percentage points, respectively.

Sustainable aviation fuel can be up to 80% less carbon intensive than conventional jet fuel. The US wants 3 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is similar to conventional jet fuel, but it's much less carbon-intensive during its full lifecycle. "There are very few that have seen the vision" of converting to SAF production.

New York CNN —Big Tech earnings are here, and investors are hoping they don’t wreck the good vibes on Wall Street. Three giant tech earnings reports this week — Microsoft (MSFT), Tesla (TSLA)and Intel (INTC) — could change that. In the year-ago quarter, earnings were $2.48 per share on $51.73 billion in revenue. Still, Wall Street expects Tesla’s earnings to grow, if not at the explosive pace of the past few years. Analysts at Goldman Sachs predict that tech growth will slow to 9% between 2021 and 2024 while the sales growth of the overall S&P 500 reaches 7%.
Now, aggressive tightening by the Federal Reserve and large spending packages have helped bring that ceiling into play once again. But Washington is at an impasse over whether or not to raise the debt limit: The White House expects Congress to pass a debt ceiling increase without conditions while Republicans say that any increase should be accompanied by spending cuts. Esther George says goodbye to the FedMost Americans dream of retiring by 65, but at the Federal Reserve it’s required. A new report from Oxfam looks at how much wealth billionaires have accumulated. The report finds billionaires are collectively adding $2.7 billion to their fortunes daily, as inflation eats up workers' wages. As top tax rates fell, billionaire wealth grew — and Oxfam says wealth taxes are one solution. That's based on the difference between billionaires' wealth from March 18, 2020, adjusted for inflation, and November 30, 2022. However, while wealth taxes are popular, they're unlikely to ever advance in the US.
More surprising was that Yglesias seemingly hadn't looked up what basis points are. "A 'basis point' is just a percentage point. It has the exact same meaning and takes up the same number of words and I have no idea why finance guys like to say 'basis point' instead. Sometimes they shorten it to 'bips' because too many people have gotten wise to the basis points," read a footnote in the original post. A basis point is not a percentage point.

2022 is the second year of a long journey to pay off my student loans and credit card debt. I also made a payment plan with credit card companies to stop my debt from accruing compound interest. I racked up over $20,000 of credit card debt, then rage-quit my job without a backup plan. Before the refinance, from January 2022 to July 2022, the minimum payment on my private student loans was $670. Here are the three crucial steps I took to pay down nearly $11,000 worth of debt in one year.
