New York CNN —Elon Musk and William Shatner clashed on Twitter over the weekend after the Star Trek actor complained about being forced to pay to keep his blue checkmark on the platform. In a tweet on Saturday, Shatner expressed frustration with Twitter’s plan to remove blue checkmarks from the accounts of celebrities, journalists, government officials and other high-profile individuals who don’t pay $84 a year (or $8 a month) for its subscription service, Twitter Blue. “Hey @elonmusk what’s this about blue checks going away unless we pay Twitter?” he tweeted. In the process, Twitter risks alienating some of the VIP users who have long been a key draw for millions to use the platform. Twitter said it will “begin winding down” the “legacy” blue checks for users on April 1.

A search through Musk’s Twitter account did not reveal the supposed tweet (archive.is/wip/fwivD), nor did archived versions of Musk’s Twitter account saved on April 25 (here), (here). On Wednesday, US President Biden offered up some rare praise for an unlikely candidate. Elon Musk opened up Tesla's charging network to rivals. "That's a big deal, and it'll make a big difference," Biden tweeted. That's unusual, as Biden and Musk appear to have a strained relationship, and even traded barbs publicly. The tweet is a sign of improving relationships between Biden and Musk, who previously complained about being ignored. "In building our EV charging network, we have to ensure that as many chargers work for as many drivers as possible," Biden said in a tweet. "To that end, @elonmusk will open a big part of @Tesla's network up to all drivers. That's a big deal, and it'll make a big difference."

Feb 3 (Reuters) - Chase Doak was getting ready to leave work when he spotted what he thought might have been a star or even a UFO. It turned out to be a spy balloon floating high over the United States and his images have been seen around the world. The Pentagon reported on Thursday that a spy balloon it suspected is Chinese had been flying over the country for a couple of days. But it was just a run-of-the mill Chinese spy balloon!" China has itself often complained about surveillance by the United States, including its deployment of ships or planes near Chinese military exercises.

Elon Musk once took to Twitter to tell a former employee she had a "tragic case of Tourette's." Tourette's syndrome is a condition of the nervous system that causes people to have tics — sudden twitches, movements, or sounds that they make repeatedly. Tourette's syndrome is more than swearingI often try to suppress my tics in public spaces or unfamiliar settings to avoid judgement from strangers. My Tourette's syndrome allows me to exhibit empathy at work, because I understand that while people may seem fine on the outside, they're likely navigating their own challenges. So, no, Elon Musk, Tourette's syndrome is not a joke — and it's too complex to fit into the confines of a 280-character tweet.
Elon Musk reinstated Michael Flynn on Twitter on Friday — two years after the deadly Jan. 6 attack. The former national security advisor was one of the most vocal 2020 election deniers. Flynn thanked Musk directly in a Friday tweet for allowing him back on the platform. Prior to his suspension, Flynn frequently shared falsehoods and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election results with his more than 1 million followers. Roger Stone, a staunch Trump ally soon took up Flynn's cause, tweeting directly at Twitter CEO Elon Musk asking the billionaire to reinstate Flynn.

Elon Musk, 'Chief Twit'

He solicited the view of the public before restoring banned accounts belonging to former U.S. President Donald Trump and other prominent U.S. election deniers. Most declined to return and work under “hardcore” conditions that entailed sleeping at the office as one employee demonstrated on Twitter. He has floated ideas ranging from building a version of China’s WeChat, a super app that would include everything from shopping to banking to social media. It has always punched above its weight and remains the preferred social media megaphone for world and industry leaders, revolutionaries and the media. Look to Musk to stoke political outrage in 2023 as he backs Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for a 2024 U.S. presidential bid while enticing Trump to start tweeting again.
MyPillow's Mike Lindell has returned to Twitter after several more banned accounts were reinstated. Upon his return, the pillow salesman once again called for voting machines to be melted down. The Trump ally continually pedaled baseless theories that voting machines were used to tamper with the results of the 2020 election. Thank you @elonmusk and by the way MELT DOWN THE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES AND TURN THEM INTO PRISON BARS!" The CEO's first tweet came hours after Musk suspended the Twitter accounts of multiple high-profile journalists.
But there's one group, almost unnoticed in the midst of the online firestorm, that has been cheering Musk on from the sidelines: other tech executives. To some founders, Musk is simply a monstrous version of the executive they wish they could be. Musk is getting rid of perks like free meals in the Twitter cafeteria — and other tech executives are taking note. Musk's slash-and-burn approach gives tech executives cover for making unpopular decisions. But now, as tech companies cut back to prepare for a recession, the "rough waters out there" have forced his staff to "reevaluate" their demands.
Dec 17 (Reuters) - Elon Musk reinstated the Twitter accounts of several journalists that were suspended for a day over a controversy on publishing public data about the billionaire's plane. A Twitter poll that Musk conducted later also showed that a majority of the respondents wanted the accounts restored immediately. Accounts who doxxed my location will have their suspension lifted now," Musk said in a tweet on Saturday. A Reuters check showed the suspended accounts, which included journalists from the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post, have been reinstated. Musk accused the journalists of posting his real-time location, saying it amounted to providing "basically assassination coordinates" for his family.
Elon Musk lifted a suspension on Twitter accounts after a poll answered by 3.1 million people. He agreed with a user who said journalists wanted to cause him and his family harm or harassment. Musk banned the accounts of journalists including CNN's Donie O'Sullivan, the Washington Post's Drew Harwell, and Ryan Mac from the New York Times. The journalists made reference to Sweeney's @ElonJet account, but didn't make reference to Musk's location in their reporting. Post reporter Harwell had criticized Elon Musk's highly publicized commitment to free speech in his final tweet before being suspended.
WASHINGTON — Democratic members of Congress had harsh words for Elon Musk on Thursday night after Twitter suddenly suspended a number of high-profile journalists who have been covering the company and Musk, its billionaire CEO. In November, shortly after he took over Twitter, Musk tweeted that he would not ban the account. Musk tweeted Thursday night. "Ro Khanna is great," Musk tweeted in response to one of some of the Twitter files. Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., tweeted: "Twitter can suspend whoever it wants.
Twitter itself knows news and journalists are major drivers of user engagement on its platform. By barring journalists, Musk is openly demonstrating his resentment towards one of Twitter's most active and important userbases, hurting the platform further. Journalists depend on Twitter, and Twitter depends on them tooBy Twitter's own estimates, journalists count for a lot on its platform. Users "regularly follow news-related Twitter accounts, and around 4 in 5 young journalists rely on the platform for their jobs. Journalists use Twitter more than any other social media platform, according to research from Pew in June, treating it as a real-time source of information.
Elon Musk falsely claimed that Twitter's ex-safety head supports the sexualization of children. Musk posted an excerpt from Yoel Roth's PhD thesis about "Gay Data" and misconstrued it. In the excerpt Musk posted, Roth advocated for social platforms like Grindr to become safe spaces for queer youth under the age of 18. Roth was the most senior member of Twitter's trust and safety team after executive Vijaya Gadde was fired by Musk on his first day as CEO. Musk then insinuated that executives including Roth were making "controversial decisions," often "without getting Jack's [Dorsey] approval."
Elon Musk sparred on Twitter with Facebook's former security chief over "Twitter Files part two." Alex Stamos tweeted "Musk fired the lawyer" who would tell him what happens if non-employees have access to users' DMs. On Thursday, conservative columnist Bari Weiss tweeted the latest thread of "files," an installment about "Twitter's secret blacklists." Journalist Matt Taibbi tweeted the first part of the "Twitter Files" last week, which Musk described as internal communications that would reveal Twitter tried to censor free speech on the platform. Stamos tweeted that he was the target of "a wave of really poorly targeted racist and antisemitic slurs from" Musk's "posse," after Musk's reply.
Caitlyn Jenner told Elon Musk he's become "public enemy number one for very, very bad people." In a Friday tweet, the former Olympian voiced her concerns of the billionaire's safety. It came following Musk releasing "The Twitter Files" – Twitter's controversial decision to suppress a New York Post report. Musk, Twitter's new owner, also said during a live interview Saturday on Twitter Space that he probably should "increase his security." The billionaire, who acquired the social media platform October 27, justified releasing the internal documents saying his goal was to build trust.
Elon Musk attended a Twitter Space Q&A with more than 100,000 listeners on Saturday. This is the second time in 2022 that Musk has alluded to his mysterious death. In a Saturday Twitter Space, Musk hosted a live Q&A on the "Twitter Files" bombshell dropped on Friday. According to Twitter, 1.8 million total tuned in to the Twitter Space interview. In the Q&A, Musk also suggested Twitter favored Democrats over Republicans in its censorship.
