I have to make a confession: Kamala Harris had a much stronger start than I expected. She appears competent, in command and she is connecting to voters — everything she wasn’t when she ran for president five years ago. Gail Collins: Bret! Bret: I’m not there yet, though the rumored choice of Josh Shapiro, the Pennsylvania governor, as her running mate would go far to reassure me about a Harris administration. Gail: Certainly seems to make sense politically — guy from a very important state, with a moderate image that might reassure Democrats who are worried that Harris is too far to the left.

Progressive groups have trained their criticisms on Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Kelly, who they accuse of being too conservative on key issues. The debate grew heated during a discussion about whether using the phrase “Genocide Josh” to describe Mr. Shapiro, who is an observant Jew, was antisemitic. One of his advisers called the Harris campaign to object to Mr. Shapiro, a development that was first reported by Politico. Manuel Bonder, a spokesman for Mr. Shapiro, declined to comment on the vice-presidential selection process. Mr. Walz and Mr. Beshear are set to appear at dueling, simultaneous fund-raisers to benefit Ms. Harris on Monday evening.

Enter Vance, who wants to halt any sort of sustained momentum for Harris as she stumps with her eventual vice presidential pick. The top contenders to be Kamala Harris’ running mate got to this point, in part, by battling Donald Trump. Now, one of them is likely to become the vice presidential nominee on the Democratic ticket aiming to thwart his comeback bid. Pete Buttigieg rose from obscurity to play a central role in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Andy Beshear, who is also in the mix for Harris’ running mate position. One way or another, Trump played a big role creating the cast of characters that could complete the Democratic ticket he’s facing this year.

The competitive, divisive primary that many Democrats long wanted to avoid has arrived anyway — playing out largely behind closed doors in a fight over the bottom of the ticket. They turned most sharply on one of the favorites to join the ticket, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who has drawn opposition from progressives and even a senator in his home state. The fissures among Democrats emerged as three leading contenders — Mr. Shapiro, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota — met with Ms. Harris at her residence in Washington on Sunday, ahead of a decision her campaign said would be announced by Tuesday.

Inside the Obama-Shapiro Relationship

In 2007, a Pennsylvania state representative named Josh Shapiro broke with much of the Democratic establishment to back for president a first-term senator from Illinois named Barack Obama. Mr. Obama, who lost Pennsylvania’s 2008 primary to Hillary Clinton but won the presidency, did not forget it. Over the nearly two decades since that early endorsement, Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Obama remained in touch, developing a connection that is closer than is commonly understood, according to interviews with people who know them both. Now, Mr. Shapiro is a popular governor in a crucial battleground state who could join a presidential ticket himself, as Vice President Kamala Harris, another early Obama supporter, weighs her running-mate options. The relationship between the two men offers a window into the instincts and influences of one of Ms. Harris’s top choices.

And each finalist offers the newly minted Democratic Party leader a particular way to balance the ticket. Here’s how each could uniquely help the Democratic ticket — plus the potential drawbacks already getting attention. Andy BeshearNo current Democratic governor has won a redder state than Kentucky, where Beshear has won statewide three times. That appeal could help boost the Democratic ticket with working-class, independent and even some Republican voters in battleground states across the U.S. Tim WalzWalz has won Democratic plaudits for a string of progressive policy wins in his state.

Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who is on the short list to be Kamala Harris’s running mate, is facing renewed criticism for his handling of a sexual harassment complaint against a longtime top aide. An employee had accused Mr. Vereb of making repeated and graphic sexual overtures and then criticizing her job performance after she refused him. She resigned rather than continue to work for him, her only other option, she said in her written complaint. Mr. Vereb, 57, kept his post for six months after his accuser first alleged misconduct. He resigned only after local reporters obtained a copy of the employee’s complaint, weeks after the settlement had been secretly reached.

Vice President Kamala Harris has one overriding weakness as a candidate for president — she is perceived as being to the left of Joe Biden. Ms. Harris has criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, supported single-payer health care and even praised the “defund the police” movement. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania as her running mate. Mr. Shapiro, who is unpopular with many progressives over energy policy, school choice and other issues, would send a signal that Ms. Harris is not captive to the left and that she puts experience ahead of ideology. But the elections of Mr. Obama and now the surge of Ms. Harris suggest that America is a lot more focused on party unity and stopping Donald Trump than on race and religion.

Mr. Shapiro has said his views have evolved in the years since writing an opinion essay critical of Palestinians when he was a college student. Mr. Shapiro, 51, has embraced his Jewish identity and been one of the Democratic Party’s staunchest defenders of Israel at a moment when the party is splintered over the war in Gaza. “Something I wrote when I was 20, is that what you’re talking about?” Mr. Shapiro told a reporter who asked him about it. He has also not shied away from criticizing college administrators over their response to campus antisemitism, including at the University of Pennsylvania. If Ms. Harris chooses Mr. Shapiro to be her running mate, he will become only the second Jewish vice-presidential nominee on a major-party ticket.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to meet with her vetting team today for a series of in-depth presentations on each of the finalists to be her running mate, according to a source familiar with the process. Each briefing is expected to last about 60 to 90 minutes, but some could be shorter or longer depending on what needs to be discussed, how complicated the vetting was, and any follow-up questions Harris may have. As CNN previously reported, the finalists include Pennsylvania Gov. According to multiple sources, the material in the vetting is expected to crystallize her choice of the top tier of finalists. Harris’ top consideration is electability, sources familiar with her thinking told CNN.

Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with top candidates to serve as her vice president on Sunday, closing out her search for a running mate with a test of whether she and her potential new partner click. It was unclear whether other potential candidates — including Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — were also on the schedule, or if they had already met with Ms. Harris. The in-person meeting, described as a “chemistry test,” is a final step in the search, but one that Ms. Harris is expected to put considerable stock in. Aides and associates have said that she often prioritizes personal rapport with her staff and advisers.

WASHINGTON — A day after former President Donald Trump falsely said Kamala Harris only recently “became Black,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer struck back Thursday and defended the vice president as “a strong Black woman” whom Trump is scared to debate. “She’s a strong Black woman — Donald Trump may not want to say that, but it’s true, and everyone knows it’s true,” he added. Josh Shapiro, Democrat of Pennsylvania, wrote in his college newspaper three decades ago that Palestinians were “too battle-minded” to achieve a two-state solution in the Middle East, prompting criticism as Vice President Kamala Harris considers him to be her running mate. Mr. Shapiro, 51, has embraced his Jewish identity and been one of the Democratic Party’s staunchest defenders of Israel at a moment when the party is splintered over the war in Gaza. But he says his views have evolved since publishing an opinion essay as a college student at the University of Rochester in New York, when he wrote that Palestinians were incapable of establishing their own homeland and making it successful, even with help from Israel and the United States. “They are too battle-minded to be able to establish a peaceful homeland of their own,” he wrote in the essay, published in the Sept. 23, 1993, edition of The Campus Times, the student newspaper. “They will grow tired of fighting amongst themselves and will turn outside against Israel.”

Buttigieg isn’t the only politician to exit a Democratic presidential primary with an enduring army of online super fans. “Team Pete” didn’t disappear, but the “veepstakes” reactivated his supporters, said Mike Schmuhl, Buttigieg’s 2020 campaign manager. This week, though, he joined the list of vice presidential hopefuls to cancel a planned event with limited explanation. They reject the idea that America isn’t ready for a major-party ticket featuring both a Black woman and the first out gay vice presidential pick. “I definitely think in my lifetime he will be on a ticket,” said Brandon Neal, a Democratic strategist and senior adviser to the 2020 campaign.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has won enough votes from Democratic delegates to win the party’s nomination for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced Friday. Delegates began casting virtual ballots for the nomination Thursday, a process that will continue until Monday evening. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” said Harris, who joined the virtual event. It’s been clear since shortly after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris that the vice president would be the only serious candidate for the nomination. Though voting for the Democratic nomination began and will possibly conclude before Harris announces her running mate, party rules don’t require a separate vote to confirm the nominee for vice president.

After all, the last time a guy named Shapiro had been elected governor of Pennsylvania, he had years earlier anglicized his name to Shapp. “I’m not aware of how his position on Israel differs from the other potential vice presidents,” Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, who is both Jewish and a proud progressive, told CNN. Of the VP’s choices, Shapiro is the one who stands out as the most divisive and could put a stop in everyone being on the same page,” said one Jewish Democratic operative. But I will say his attacks, this might surprise you, don’t bother me personally,” Shapiro said at the time. But calling what’s coming at Shapiro “pure antisemitism,” Rep.
