The United States Justice Department began an investigation on Tuesday into the city of Trenton, N.J., and its police department after getting “serious and credible” reports of officers using improper levels of force and illegally stopping and searching pedestrians and drivers. The inquiry into New Jersey’s capital city and its police force is expected to take a year and could lead to federal oversight of the department through a consent decree. The review will include on-the-job observation of police officers, interviews with residents and an analysis of police records, including footage from body-worn cameras and internal affairs investigations, officials said. Since 2021, the Justice Department has opened similar inquiries into 10 other police agencies across the country, said Kristen Clarke, an assistant attorney general with the department’s civil rights division.

Oct 16 (Reuters) - Scotland coach Steve Clarke hailed the progress his side have made after they secured a berth at next year's European Championship with two games to spare. Spain's 1-0 win over Norway on Sunday ensured a top-two finish for Scotland in Group A, earning them automatic qualification for Euro 2024 in Germany. Scotland have qualified for back-to-back European Championship finals for just the second time, after they played in the 1992 and 1996 editions of the tournament. "I said after Euro 2020 that we wanted to be serial qualifiers again and reaching successive Euro finals shows the progress we've made." Clarke said they would celebrate qualification before getting back to work with their preparations for Tuesday's friendly against France.

Enteral nutrition is administered through a feeding tube or it can be taken orally. Fresenius owns 32% of Fresenius Medical Center, which saw shares drop on recent news that Ozempic's kidney disease treatment trial showed signs of success. Clinical nutrition is about 20% of group profits and an important subset of its larger specialized nutrition unit, Ackerman said. "Many investors only focus only on their infant formula unit and don't know how big or how profitable clinical nutrition is," he said. ”We are evacuating, everyone we know is evacuating. I thought we’re used to wars you know, I know that’s such a horrible sentence to use, but I’m 22 years old. They took us out, and they took us — they were like, OK, just run to the nearest hospital, you know. The street was so bombed, so destroyed, endless, you know, you just keep evacuating, evacuating, evacuate, like evacuate and go where exactly? Internet has been cut many times, and during those times I felt that I was completely trapped.

Student loan payments have resumed for the first time since 2020, and many borrowers are dreading the effect it will have on their finances. That stress could also negatively affect their mental health. Consider that just last year 54% of student loan borrowers said their mental health issues like depression and anxiety were directly related to their debt, according to a poll conducted by online education program, ELVTR. In honor of World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10, CNBC Make It talked to a financial expert with a background in psychology about how one can maintain positive mental health even with student loan debt. DON'T MISS: 54% of student loan borrowers say their mental health issues like anxiety and depression are directly related to their debt"We can't just walk away from our student loans, but what we can do is minimize the amount of stress that we expose ourselves to," says Wendell Clarke, a behavioral wealth specialist at Wealth Enhancement Group.

An Israeli security source said Deif was directly involved in the planning and operational aspects of the attack. Deif said Hamas had urged the international community to put an end to the "crimes of the occupation", but Israel had stepped up its provocation. He also said Hamas had in the past asked Israel for a humanitarian deal to release Palestinian prisoners, but this was rejected. Google's new search capabilities can also be used for other crucial applications such as applying the correct billing codes and determining whether patients meet the criteria to enroll in a clinical trial, O'Malley said. Google Cloud on Monday announced new artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities that it said will help health-care workers quickly pull accurate clinical information from different types of medical records. Aashima Gupta, global director of health care strategy and solutions at Google Cloud, said the new Vertex AI Search capabilities can integrate directly into a clinician's workflow, which is of high importance for customers in the field. Customers can sign up for early access to Vertex AI Search for health care and life sciences starting Monday, but Google Cloud has already been testing the capabilities with health organizations such as Mayo Clinic, Hackensack Meridian Health and Highmark Health. Mayo Clinic is not using the new Vertex AI Search tools in clinical care yet, said Cris Ross, Mayo's chief information officer; it is starting with administrative use cases.

If travel companies want to capture the business of Gen Z travelers, they'll have to rethink their approach, according to research by Bernstein. Gen Z adults use TikTok and Instagram to make purchase decisions at more than double the rate of the average person, a Bernstein analysis found. While older generations may spend more money, younger Americans are booking more travel than Gen X and Baby Boomers. "Travel companies will need to cultivate their presence, rather than leaning on high conversion platforms like Google," he said. The vacation-rental platform has the highest skew to 18-24 year olds and 5.4 million Instagram followers, the highest among travel companies, he added.

Google was the first big tech company to say it would impose new labels on deceptive AI-generated political advertisements that could fake a candidate's voice or actions. The pressure on the social media companies comes as both lawmakers are helping to lead a charge to regulate AI-generated political ads. Google has already said that starting in mid-November it will require a clear disclaimer on any AI-generated election ads that alter people or events on YouTube and other Google products. This policy applies both in the U.S. and in other countries where the company verifies election ads. Facebook and Instagram parent Meta doesn’t have a rule specific to AI-generated political ads but has a policy restricting “faked, manipulated or transformed” audio and imagery used for misinformation.

REUTERS/Stringer/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - The British government will try next week to persuade judges at the country's top court to overturn a ruling which declared unlawful its divisive plan to deport to Rwanda asylum seekers who arrive in small boats across the Channel. The stakes for Sunak are high, as he has made dealing with immigration one of his five priorities. This year, more than 25,000 people have arrived in Britain on small boats, while a record 45,755 were detected in 2022. Housing some of those migrants in hotels costs about 6 million pounds a day. Polls show high immigration remains a major concern to voters, although conversely also suggest there is support for migrants filling labour shortages.

For his manager, Barrie Chapman, the overtime he now gets is a huge boost once unheard of in the hospitality sector. At its "Alcampo Lounge" venue in Brighton, staff can get a free meal per shift, flexible hours, bonuses, and overtime for salaried employees. "There's been a trend in hospitality to work staff hard, to not treat them very well, because there was always another person that would come in," said head chef Chris Lloyd-Rogers. "That's why people leave work, and it's what brings people back," Wilson said. Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico CNN —A couple of dozen people pile into a van meant for 13. The families grab their belongings and head along a tarmacked path as we join them, long grass mostly hiding them from the view of the highway and Mexican officials. Occasionally, Mexican officials shout out across the grass to the walkers and tell them to come back to the main road. This static game of cat and mouse will play out several times past several checkpoints on the route. The migrants CNN spoke with said this was just another bump in their long road, another set of obstacles that will likely make what is generally a one-hour drive last the whole day.
