Morgan Stanley thinks Wall Street overreacted to Kornit Digital's latest revenue guidance, and shares in the Israeli fabric printing company now present a favorable buying opportunity. Morgan Stanley's forecast implies more than 30% upside from Wednesday's $22.23 close. Kornit Digital shares are 6.6% higher in 2023 after climbing more than 10% early Thursday. KRNT YTD mountain Kornit Digital stock has shed 3.2% from the start of the year. But Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring says the market reaction to Kornit's lower second-half revenue forecast, which he says came in 7% below consensus estimates, was too severe.

Federal regulators have suspended research on human subjects at the Columbia-affiliated New York State Psychiatric Institute, one of the country’s oldest research centers, as they investigate safety protocols across the institute after the suicide of a research participant. The decision affected 417 studies, of which 198 have continuing participation. Of those, 124 receive federal funding. It is unusual for the U.S. regulatory office to suspend research, and this suggests that investigators are concerned that potential violations of safety protocols occurred more broadly within the institute. Almost 500 studies, with combined budgets totaling $86 million, are underway at the institute, according to its website.

Tesla sales in China have slumped – and it's faltering economy may not be the reason why, according to Bank of America. That's because demand for Tesla rival BYD rose 4%, while Tesla deliveries dropped 31% month-over-month in July. It suggests demand for Teslas in China is waning in the face of local competition. In a recent note, the bank highlighted Tesla Model 3 and Model Y deliveries in China dropped by 31% month-over-month in July, while its largest EV competitor in China, BYD Auto, grew 4% month-over-month. Tesla has repeatedly dropped prices of its vehicles over the past year, in a bid to undercut rivals and boost market share.

On August 6, the tech news blog Stack Diary pointed out the section of Zoom's terms of service. But as Stack Diary points out, the clarification may not fully protect your calls, based on the specific language in Zoom's terms of service. The clarifications in Zoom's terms of service come as members of the public have expressed outrage over their data being used to train AI.

The Future of Rap Is Female
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Niela Orr | Photographs Adrienne Raquel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +22 min
The Future of Rap Is Female As their male counterparts turn depressive and paranoid, it’s the women who are having all the fun. In the mid-’80s, the dynamics shifted slightly, when UTFO released “Roxanne, Roxanne,” a comical torch song dissing a woman who rejected the men’s advances. Like good sex, raunchy rap is only fun if all parties are completely enthusiastic, and this music provides necessary female perspectives to match what the men make. In Miami one weekend in late July, Rolling Loud, one of the biggest annual hip-hop festivals, made itself into a microcosm of the rap world. There’s a relentless gender pessimism in the air, too — on the street, on dating apps, in the Supreme Court and, of course, in rap music.

India's defence ministry did not respond to Reuters questions. The U.S. Congress in 2019 banned the Pentagon from buying or using drones and components made in China. India has set aside 1.6 billion rupees ($19.77 billion) for military modernisation in 2023-24, of which 75% is reserved for domestic industry. But the ban on Chinese parts has raised the cost of making military drones locally by forcing manufacturers to source components elsewhere, government and industry experts said. Sameer Joshi, founder of Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research and Technologies, a supplier of small drones for India's military, said 70% of goods in the supply chain were made in China.

Tesla may be losing the consumer demand battle in China, according to Bank of America. The electric vehicle maker experienced several months of strong demand in China after it lowered prices on the Model 3 and Model Y last December. However, the brand saw its deliveries in China tumble 31% month over month in July, suggesting that the initial uptick was temporary, according to analyst John Murphy. The price cuts have created a negative price spiral, according to the analyst. Other automakers followed Tesla's lead and announced their own price cuts or incentives, including BYD and Xpeng.

Ariane Kunze | The Columbian via APWhy child care costs are so highRising fees at child care centers are contributing to the growing costs of child care, as well as inflation and changes in parents' work status, according to Care.com. Many day care centers shuttered during the pandemic, leaving the few that stayed open with limited slots available. The new child fee is usually used to fund teachers' education, books and materials for the classes, she added. Financial advisors say there are several other ways parents can plan ahead to help cover child care costs.

On a quarterly, non-seasonally adjusted basis, GDP expanded 3.86%, compared with the poll's prediction of 3.72% growth. Meanwhile, exports contracted 2.75% in the second quarter on a yearly basis, in stark contrast to last quarter's growth of more than 10%. Myrdal Gunarto, economist with Maybank Indonesia, said he might raise his bank's full-year 2023 GDP growth outlook of 5.05%, but described the second quarter data as "a sign that economic activities had peaked". The better-than-expected data may spur monetary policymakers to shift their focus from growth to the current account, as strong domestic demand typically leads to rising imports, said Fakhrul Fulvian, economist with Trimegah Securities, who maintained his full-year 2023 GDP growth outlook at 5%. The government is targeting the same growth rate for 2023.

Foxconn's July sales drop 1.23% y/y, Q3 outlook better

The company said revenue was the second-highest for the month of July, thanks to "customers' increasing pull-in" for its smart consumer electronics products, including smartphones. That segment recorded double-digit growth from a year ago, it said, as major vendors such as Apple gear up for new product launches later this year. Other businesses, including computing products such as PCs and cloud and networking products, declined from a year ago, the company said, without elaborating. The first half of the year is traditionally slower for Taiwan tech manufacturers as major electronics vendors including Apple launch new products near the year-end holiday season. Second-quarter revenue dropped 13.8% year-on-year, in line with the company's expectations, Foxconn said in July.
