CNN —A zookeeper in Austria has died and another has been seriously injured after being attacked by a rhino, Salzburg police said on Tuesday. The rhino attacked a 33-year-old female animal keeper while she attended to her early morning work in the animal’s enclosure at Salzburg Hellbrunn Zoo, police said in a press release. According to its website, the zoo is home to 150 species and 1,500 animals – including white rhinos. White rhinos are the second-largest land mammal and they can weigh between 3,080 and 7,920 pounds, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature. With fewer than 16,000 white rhinos left, their status is near-threatened.

Sept 12 (Reuters) - British chip components maker IQE (IQE.L) on Tuesday said the recovery in the semiconductor industry would likely be slower-than-anticipated this year but it would improve in 2024 as customer demand picks up. IQE, which makes "epi-wafers", a type of advanced material used in products from laser hair removal to facial recognition sensors in iPhones, swung to a loss in the first-half hurt by lower sales and a supply glut. The company's posted a core loss of 5.7 million pounds ($7.13 million) for the six months ended June 30, compared with a core profit of 12.3 million pounds last year. Still, the Apple (AAPL.O) supplier said it expected core earnings to be profitable for 2023, adding that it saw double-digit revenue growth in the second half of 2023, compared to the first half. Elon Musk spent Christmas Eve moving X's data servers from one facility to another. The facility was a major cost for X, according to Musk's new biography penned by Walter Isaacson. The next day, Christmas Eve, Musk called in reinforcements including friends from Tesla, SpaceX, and The Boring Company to procure equipment and tools needed to move the servers. Musk later admitted the "whole Sacramento shutdown was a mistake," after the lack of servers caused a whole host of issues. Isaacson wrote that Musk's Sacramento incident was "an example of his recklessness, his impatience with pushback, and the way he intimidated people."

The study also mapped out the supply chains of six unidentified global apparel brands operating in the four countries studied - Bangladesh, Cambodia, Pakistan and Vietnam - and found all six would be hit materially. There are some [apparel] brands not disclosing the factory locations of their suppliers," said Angus Bauer, Schroders' head of sustainable investment research. Using projections, the researchers analysed future heat and flooding levels to estimate what would happen under a "climate adaptive" scenario and a "high heat and flooding" scenario. Flooding will also force factories to close in the four countries, which account for 18% of global apparel exports and employ 10.6 million workers in apparel and footwear factories. By 2050, lost export earnings would reach 68.6% and there would be 8.64 million fewer jobs.

Yenchun Chen, a Queens man accused of trying to sell fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine to an undercover officer, was being held at Rikers Island last month when he complained about chest pains, according to authorities. He spent several days at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in Midtown Manhattan, where he was guarded by two Department of Correction officers and received occasional visitors. On the afternoon of Aug. 9, according to the police, Mr. Chen — all 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds of him — slipped quietly away. Mr. Chen, 44, told guards that he needed to shower and they permitted him to bathe alone, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter. Five minutes later they checked on him, but the shower was empty, the window was open and a rope made of knotted sheets was dangling from it, the law enforcement official said.

The focus is shifting to a new front: Synthetic graphite, an element developed in the late 19th century, but only redirected toward EVs in the past decade. Synthetic graphite could account for nearly two-thirds of the EV battery anode market by 2025, estimates Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. "It’s easier to set up a synthetic graphite production facility than it is to commission new mining sites for natural graphite” because producers can take advantage of incentives in last year's U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to build synthetic graphite capacity in the U.S. or Free Trade Agreement partners, she said. Other experts note synthetic graphite is generally higher purity and offers better and more predictable performance than natural graphite. Still, the construction of new production facilities for synthetic graphite, even with federal incentives, requires a staggering investment, said Novonix's Burns.

The UK government will support the partnership with an investment of £2 million ($2.50 million) as part of its push to support circular economy magnet rare earths, as the West diversifies supply chains away from China which produces almost all the world's magnet supply. Rare earths are the most magnetic of all metals, used in applications from wind farms to EVs to defence. To support production at this facility there will be a requirement for over 600 tonnes of magnet raw material per annum, it said in the release.

I found a great solution in the EcoFlow Delta 1300 Portable Power Station. With a 1,260-watt-hour capacity, which is nearly 50 times as much power as those portable power banks, and enough ports to power 13 devices at once, it fit my needs and my budget. A portable power station doesn’t promise full glamping, but it does help maintain a baseline of comfort for a small group. It’s the company’s lightest and lowest-price portable power station, packing 882 watt hours of power and only three fewer ports into a 23.6-pound package. I bought this power station with pessimistic emergency preparedness in mind.

BMW said on Monday that it would invest 600 million pounds, or about $750 million, to build electric versions of its popular Mini car models in Britain. The German manufacturer’s move allays fears that the combination of Brexit and the shift to electric cars would pose a dire threat to automobile manufacturing in Britain, but questions over the sector’s long-term future remain. BMW’s announcement is the third major piece of good news for Britain’s beleaguered car industry in recent months. Tata Group, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, said in July it would spend 4 billion pounds to build a battery plant in western England. And last week, Stellantis, the leading maker of commercial vans in Britain, began producing electric-powered vans at its plant near Liverpool, after a £100 million investment.

BMW will make a multimillion pound investment in its electric Mini production in Britain, the business ministry said on Monday, a move which secures 4,000 jobs. Business minister Kemi Badenoch will visit a Mini plant in Oxford for the announcement of the investment, which the government said followed "extensive government engagement and support." The government did not give a figure for the announcement but said it would bring total investment into the automotive sector to over 6 billion pounds ($7.48 billion) in recent years. "BMW's investment is another shining example of how the UK is the best place to build cars of the future," British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement. It comes less than two months after India's Tata said it will invest 4 billion pounds in an EV battery plant in Britain to supply its Jaguar Land Rover factories — a move seen as vital for the UK car industry's continued survival in the electric age.

LONDON (AP) — German automaker BMW is set to announce plans to build the next generation electric Mini in Britain after securing U.K. government support for a multimillion-pound investment in the company’s Oxford factory. While the Department for Business and Trade didn’t specify the level of taxpayer support, British media put the figure at 75 million pounds ($94 million). The move is the latest boost for the U.K. auto industry, with vehicle makers announcing plans to invest more than 6 billion pounds ($7.5 billion) in Britain over the past two years. While car production jumped 36% from a year earlier in July, output remains far below pre-pandemic levels. Of hundreds of Ukrainian prisoners of war held by Russia and released in exchanges, Ukrainian officials have said 90 percent suffered torture, including sexual violence, she said. Yet she expressed frustration that during her visit she was not able to advance far with cases of sexual violence against women in the Ukrainian conflict. Relatively few Ukrainian women have come forward to prosecutors with complaints of sexual torture or crimes, she said. Men, who also suffered sexual torture in detention, have come forward in larger numbers, she said. Ms. Edwards said that the coercive environment of the conflict zone was enough to establish lack of consent in cases of sexual violence.

Sept 9 (Reuters) - Britain will commit to provide $2 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to help developing countries cope with climate change, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Sunday at the G20 Leaders Summit in New Delhi. The pledge would be the biggest single funding commitment the UK has made to date to help the world tackle climate change, a government statement said. Britain has committed to spend 11.6 billion pounds ($14.46 billion) on international climate finance between 2021 and 2026. Government officials calculated it would have to spend 83% of the total aid budget on the international climate fund to meet the 11.6 billion pound target by 2026. It said $5.8-5.9 trillion is required by developing countries before 2030, in particular for their needs to implement their emission targets.
