Take Five: More drama on the horizon
  + stars: | 2023-05-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
LONDON, May 19 (Reuters) - There's no shortage of events, data and high drama for markets in the days ahead. 1/ USA WATCHCritical U.S. inflation data will allow investors to gauge whether the Federal Reserve will be able to pause its interest rate hiking cycle, as many on Wall Street expect. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, tracked by the Fed, is due on Friday for April. That was the smallest rise since July and, with the consumer price index slowing in April to below 5% on annual basis, hope for peak rates has grown. Yet this narrative could lose steam if Wednesday's April inflation data shows price rises are moderating.
Here's what you need to know about the ETIC and other notable tax credits, and which forms you'll need to file a 2019 tax return. Some people are eligible for an even larger payout: up to $6,557, if you qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) . A whopping $1.5 billion in tax refunds remain unclaimed from the 2019 tax season, with the average refund totaling $893, the IRS says. Hundreds of dollars from the Internal Revenue Service could be up for grabs if you haven't submitted your 2019 tax return yet. The IRS is only accepting mailed 2019 tax returns, so you'll need to send your tax return to the addresses listed on this IRS webpage.

This under-the-radar software stock could be the next big artificial intelligence winner investors are ignoring, according to some Wall Street analysts. Dynatrace , a Massachusetts-based software company that harnesses artificial intelligence for a host of use cases, including business analytics and application security, could win big in the latest AI arms race. DT YTD mountain Dynatrace shares in 2023 BMO Capital Markets' Keith Bachman called the stock a "clear leader" within AI in a Wednesday note to clients. He views compelling growth and margin opportunities for Dynatrace through its Grail analytics tool that uses AI to help users better understand their data. Given his conviction in Dynatrace's AI potential, Bachman raised his price target to $55 from $50 a share reflecting about 12% upside from Thursday's close.
Israel's annual inflation rate held steady at 5% in April versus expectations it would ease to 4.7%, and stayed well above an official annual target of 1-3%. Shal believes the cycle will end next week and expects rates to stay on hold for the rest of the year, before the Bank starts cutting them in early 2024. When it began hiking rates in April of 2022, the Bank of Israel had initially hoped its front-loading stance would be able to cap its key rate at around 3%. The inflation rate has stayed at at least 5% since last October and peaked at 5.4% in January. Bank Leumi Chief Economist Gil Bufman noted "the drop in inflation in Israel since its peak is low compared to the other countries".
The justices upheld a lower court's ruling that Warhol's works based on Goldsmith's 1981 photo were not immune from her copyright infringement lawsuit. Warhol, who died in 1987, was a foremost participant in the pop art movement that germinated in the 1950s. At issue in the litigation involving Goldsmith was Warhol's "Orange Prince" series. She countersued the Andy Warhol Foundation in 2017 after it asked a court to find that the works did not violate her copyright. Under that standard, the circuit court said Warhol's paintings were closer to adapting Goldsmith's photo in a different medium than transforming it.
A veteran Wall Street executive told CNBC that he has been helping bankroll Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s anti-vaccine group and has become an informal advisor to the organization. Mark Gorton, founder and chairman of high-frequency trading firm Tower Research Capital, said he has given $1 million to the anti-vaccine nonprofit organization called Children's Health Defense since 2021. Kennedy, a longtime vaccine critic and a son of late senator and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, founded Children's Health Defense. Asked about Gorton's donation, a spokeswoman for the Children's Health Defense said in an email, "CHD's donor information is confidential and only communicated to the IRS in compliance with their rules/regulations." The Associated Press reported that Children's Health Defense played a key role in pushing back on Covid vaccines and helped elevate Kennedy's profile.
Even the man who runs ChatGPT-maker OpenAI worries about the influence of AI on 2024's election. The devastation caused by social media in America's recent political history could look like child's play by comparison to AI. Even Altman thinks AI will make humans stupidFor now, Altman said, humans understand that AI is in its infancy and are aware that bots like ChatGPT routinely make mistakes. Altman correctly (and self-interestedly) called during the session for AI to be regulated, including a suggestion that AI-generated content is clearly labeled. The same slowness just won't cut it in a world running to embrace ChatGPT.
The chipmaker, at the center of the latest generative AI arms race , has seen its stock more than double this year. Robust demand for AI, which has boosted the market , should continue to benefit Nvidia as well. Oppenheimer's Rick Schafer seemed to agreed with Rolland's perspective, calling Nvidia a "best-in-class play on AI adoption." He referred to its hardware platform as a "cornerstone" of the proliferating AI market. "Gaming channel inventory has normalized and is poised for accelerated growth into 2H," Schafer wrote.
“I’m sorry to have to report the end of an era,” Bobby Horvath, a wildlife rehabilitation specialist, wrote on Facebook Tuesday night. “Pale Male passed away tonight in our care.”Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk who took up residence on the ledge of a ritzy Manhattan apartment building 30 years ago, was the subject of hundreds of newspaper articles, at least three books and an award-winning documentary film and also counted Mary Tyler Moore among his fans. But whether the bird Mr. Horvath declared dead was actually Pale Male remains a mystery. Pale Male, an apex predator living in the most populated city in the United States, was the original New York City celebrity bird, predating Barry the barred owl, the “hot” Mandarin duck and Flaco the eagle-owl. He was named for his light-colored feathers by birder and author Marie Winn, a longtime columnist for The Wall Street Journal who followed his progress in print for over a decade and penned a book about him, “Red-Tails in Love,” making him something of a local celebrity.
Rising at the edge of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal — a rezoned superfund site with developers racing to build — the colossal industrial relic known locally as the Batcave has found its own Bruce Wayne. Consider it his gift to Gotham. On May 19, the nonprofit organization celebrates its grand opening, inviting a broad swath of the art world, city government and local residents to tour its state-of-the-art facilities designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with PBDW Architects. The conceptual artist Lorna Simpson, who’s collaborated with Powerhouse’s print shop, sees all kinds of opportunities for cross-pollination between media in the new building. “I really had ceramic envy walking through Powerhouse,” Simpson said, imagining that artists will have ideas that “can branch into something else that happens within the building because you can easily look at samples or have a conversation about technique.”
MUMBAI, May 17 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee hit a more-than-six-week low against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, in line with the decline in other Asian currencies that tracked the fall in the Chinese yuan after weak economic data. The rupee hit 82.4425 against the U.S. dollar, its lowest since April 3, during the session, before recovering to close up 0.21% at 82.38. The weak economic print from China has weighed on Asian currencies, said Dilip Parmar, research analyst at HDFC Securities. Parmar doesn't expect the Reserve Bank of India to intervene at the current levels as other Asian currencies have started depreciating and the dollar index is strengthening. Domestic economic data points like easing inflation and improved external currencies have mostly come in support of the local currency.
The BookTok phenomenon helped send book sales to an all-time high and reignite a love for reading. From authors to stores, the book world is turning to TikTok to drive sales and build community. Still, while authors might feel pressure to try TikTok, industry experts say it's better to focus on craft than marketing. Aster is one of the hundreds of authors who are benefitting from the success of TikTok and its book-related hashtag #BookTok. But TikTok's influence on publishing has also dialed up the pressure on authors to be marketers, as well as writers.

Sterling falls as cracks appear in Britain's job market
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Sterling fell by as much as 0.52% against the dollar to a session low of $1.2466, and by as much as 0.4% against the euro . Right now, the derivatives market shows traders believe UK rates will peak at 4.80% in November, down from 4.86% a day ago. Tuesday's data showed pay growth - which is at the heart of the BoE's debate about whether to raise interest rates further - remained strong by historical standards. That said, with inflation at 10.1%, pay growth in real terms is still deeply negative and close to its weakest in years. Markets are attaching a 68% chance that the BoE will raise rates by a quarter of a point to 4.75% and a 32% chance of no change.
A possible cyberattack on The Philadelphia Inquirer disrupted the newspaper’s print operation over the weekend and prompted it to close its newsroom through at least Tuesday, when its staff will be covering an expensive and fiercely contested mayoral primary. Elizabeth H. Hughes, the publisher and chief executive of The Inquirer, said that the newspaper discovered “anomalous activity on select computer systems” on Thursday and “immediately took those systems offline.”But The Inquirer was unable to print its regular Sunday edition, the newspaper reported. Instead, print subscribers received a Sunday “early edition,” which went to press on Friday night. The newspaper also reported on Sunday that its ability to post and update stories on its website, Inquirer.com, was “sometimes slower than normal.”The Monday print editions of The Inquirer and The Philadelphia Daily News, which The Inquirer also publishes, were distributed as scheduled, Evan Benn, a company spokesman, said.

The 56-year-old is the prime ministerial candidate for the Bhumjaithai Party, which has campaigned on a promise to promote medical marijuana after successfully pushing for the substance to be decriminalised last year. Without associated regulations in place, recreational use surged, angering the Southeast Asian country's conservatives. Anutin has promised that if re-elected, he will tighten regulations to curb recreational use and restrict cannabis use to medical purposes only. Anutin flashed a smile as he emerged from a voting booth and declined to answer reporters' questions about the symbolism of his shirt. Prayuth faces off against the populist platform of the opposition Pheu Thai party, backed by the billionaire Shinawatra family, which has won every election in Thailand since 2001.
From ‘Front-Page Girls’ to Newsroom Leaders

Yet few readers today will place Ross’s name, let alone those of the “front-page girls” she celebrated. Papers with strapped budgets took on more women, a trajectory that mirrors the history of professions like teaching and nursing. Still, as late as the 1950s, Kroeger writes, “women journalists inched across a swinging rope bridge toward fuller acceptance but still in single file.” Their pluck went only so far. Between 1970 and 1983, anti-discrimination suits roiled The Times, Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post and The Associated Press, among other outlets. Before those proceedings, women had tended to cluster “on the bottom rungs of a company ladder with broken steps,” Kroeger writes.
What might get this stock market unstuck

Clearly the market is captive of strong, opposing and somewhat unpredictable currents, as the passengers argue over what might get stocks unstuck, and in which direction. Excluding financial stocks, for instance, the S & P 500 would be up 11% for the year. Here is the equal-weighted S & P 500 vs. the Nasdaq 100 since the end of 2021. The stock market has, coincidentally or not, carved a similar path so far this year as it did to begin 2011. The S & P 500 that year raced higher to print a 7% gain into a February high, then chopped sideways.
Prints of photographs from Madonna’s wildly popular 1992 coffee table book “Sex” will be available for purchase for the first time at Christie’s New York this fall, part of ongoing projects to mark the 30th anniversary of the controversial publication. In October, over 40 prints first published in “Sex” will go up for sale as part of a special standalone auction. “Thirty years on, ‘Sex’ is still somewhat controversial, but it still reads as a very body-positive, sex-positive book,” Himes said. “Sex” also featured Madonna’s then-boyfriend, rapper Vanilla Ice, and stars like supermodel Naomi Campbell and socialite Tatiana von Fürstenberg. The prints will go on display at Christie's galleries in London, Paris and New York before the October auction.
The tour organizer canceled the trip, citing health and safety issues, and refunded our money. I had bought my airfare ($1,504) separately, so I assumed my GoReady Pandemic Plus insurance policy would cover it. If travel insurance doesn’t cover this, what does it cover? Khatiba, Sebastopol, Calif.Dear Khatiba,You are forgiven for thinking that the “trip cancellation” portion of your policy would cover, say, trip cancellation. My inbox is flooded with messages from travelers whose similarly reasonable-sounding claims were denied either because of a policy’s fine print or because the documentation process became so mind-bendingly bureaucratic that they simply gave up.
