PDD 's tumble of nearly 30% last week on disappointing quarterly results is a reminder that China's consumer has largely moved on from its years of double-digit growth. "The reaction of its stock price is out of touch with its fundamentals," he said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC. "The entire Chinese consumer market is weak, yes, [but] PDD management's very peculiar comments caused the share price decline," he said. Chen Lei, chairman and co-CEO of PDD, warned multiple times on the earnings call about future declines in profit. Revenue grew by 21%, while adjusted earnings nearly doubled from a year ago.

Alibaba has completed a three-year regulatory "rectification" process following an antitrust fine it received on charges of monopolistic practices in 2021, China's market regulator said on Friday. In 2021, China's SAMR fined Alibaba 18.23 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) as part of an anti-monopoly investigation into the tech giant. Jefferies analysts said in a note Friday that the conclusion of the regulatory process was a "positive" for the company, which "highlights this is a new start and ensures compliance in operations." Ant Group itself also underwent a regulator-supervised rectification process, with most of the major issues resolved by last year. Regulatory concerns have been an overhang on the Alibaba stock, which has fallen more than 70% from its peak in 2020.

Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser at the White House, will travel to China next week to meet with Wang Yi, the country’s foreign minister, in their latest high-level meeting aimed at defusing tensions. “These meetings are consistent with efforts to maintain this strategic channel of communication to responsibly manage the relationship,” said Sean Savett, a spokesman for the National Security Council. Mr. Sullivan’s visit will be his fifth face-to-face meeting with Mr. Wang but his only trip to Beijing since the start of the Biden administration. It will also be the first by a U.S. national security adviser since Susan Rice traveled to China on behalf of President Barack Obama in 2016. A senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to comment on diplomatic discussions, said Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Wang would discuss potential issues of cooperation, such as efforts to limit the spread of fentanyl, as well as areas where the two countries are locked in disputes, including the future of Taiwan.

According to an indictment unsealed Thursday, Bond had a fake consulting agreement with FTX, the notorious cryptocurrency exchange run by Sam Bankman-Fried. The $400,000 she received — along with gobs of more stolen money from FTX — fueled her congressional campaign, prosecutors say. The charges against Bond come one day after she finalized a divorce with her previous partner, according to Salame. In total, Salame and FTX gave Bond over $900,000, according to the indictment — far above the legal limits. Ryan Salame, former co-chief executive officer of FTX Digital Markets Ltd., exits federal court in New York, US, on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Ryan Salame, a former top lieutenant at the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, asked a New York federal judge Wednesday to void his guilty plea to campaign finance and money-transmitting crimes, saying prosecutors are reneging on a key element of his plea agreement. Nicholas Biase, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, declined to comment on Salame's filing. The charges against Salame stemmed from his involvement in a multi-million dollar campaign finance scheme during his tenure at FTX. Bankman-Fried was allegedly also deeply involved in the campaign finance scheme.

A gold medalist diver’s mother said she was afraid for her daughter to come home after their hometown was swarmed with her supporters. A champion swimmer whose hotel was staked out by admirers disbanded his official fan group and told an interviewer he would rather have performed worse if it meant he would be left alone. After a stellar run at the Paris Olympics, where China tied the United States for the most gold medals, Chinese athletes are now facing a darker side of that success: extreme fans. Celebrities globally have to deal with fans who are sometimes invasive, but in China this phenomenon can be especially intense. Some fans stalk their idols and sell their photos or personal information.

A "Buy Treasury bonds" poster is seen at a bank in Haian, East China's Jiangsu province, Aug 1, 2024. "We remain actively bullish," said a bond fund manager, undeterred by unprecedented government moves to cool the sizzling treasury market and arrest a plunge in yields, which move inversely to prices. Falling yields also complicate the People's Bank of China's (PBOC) efforts to stabilize the weakening yuan. Unlike the West, "China's financial markets, including the bond market, are subject to top-down regulation," said Ryan Yonk, economist with the American Institute for Economic Research. China supports Iran in defending its “sovereignty, security and national dignity,” Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told Iran’s acting foreign minister in a phone call on Sunday, according to a statement by China’s foreign ministry. Iran and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out strike that killed Haniyeh. Wang told Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, that the killing of Haniyeh had “directly undermined the Gaza ceasefire negotiation process and undermined regional peace and stability,” China’s foreign ministry said. “China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law, and in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and stands ready to maintain close communication with Iran,” Wang was quoted as saying. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday nominated Abbas Araqchi as the country’s foreign minister.

PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games, Americans dominated. On the final day of the Games, China is leading Team USA in the medal table, with 39 golds to America’s 38. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S. Though Russia, a longtime dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped any competitors. Hong Kong CNN —Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ running mate has a decades-long connection with China. “I remember waking up and seeing the news on June 4 that the unthinkable had happened,” Walz told Voice of America in an interview in 2014. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has argued that AI models should eventually produce synthetic data good enough to train themselves effectively. As the well of usable human-generated data dries up, more companies look into using synthetic data. Rather than being pulled from the real world, synthetic data is generated by AI systems that have been trained on real-world data. Synthetic data may help offer some effective "countertuning" to the biases produced by real-world data, too. 'Habsburg AI'While the AI industry found some advantages in synthetic data, it faces serious issues it can't afford to ignore, such as fears synthetic data can wreck AI models.

Today’s solar panels that use silicon cells, by comparison, typically covert up to 22% of sunlight into power. Another important factor fueling solar’s rise is its growing efficiency in converting the sun’s energy. But Wang noted that the research group is not advocating for the end of solar farms. “I wouldn’t say we want to eliminate solar farms because obviously we need lots of areas or surfaces to generate sufficient amount of solar energy,” he told CNN. Some coatings in lab settings have dissolved or broken down over short periods of time, so are regarded as less durable than today’s solar panels.
