CNN —A record 16 Chinese warships were spotted in waters around Taiwan in a 24-hour period late last week, the island’s Defense Ministry reported, in what analysts said was the latest sign of an intimidation campaign against Taipei by China’s ruling Communist Party. During that same period, nine PLA vessels were reported in waters around Taiwan in three consecutive days. The 16 Chinese ships around Taiwan on Friday into Saturday was the most since the island’s Defense Ministry began providing daily updates of PLA activity around the island in August 2022. “Analysts said Sunday that the recent intensive exercises demonstrate the PLA’s capabilities in encircling the island,” the Global Times story said. Neither Taiwan’s Defense Ministry nor the Global Times article gave details on what PLA warships were in the waters around Taiwan.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) activity has a range of implications, none of them positive for Taiwan or cross-strait stability, analysts say. The PLA aircraft detected this week included fighter jets, H-6 bombers, anti-submarine warning aircraft and reconnaissance drones, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said. Their response underscores the problem that increased PLA activity poses to Taiwan, said Carl Schuster, a Hawaii-based analyst and former director of operations at the US Pacific Command’s Joint Intelligence Center. “Beijing hopes Taipei will just accept unification as inevitable and allow Chinese forces in without resistance. Mission Impossible: Paramount reckoning

NEW YORK, July 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Paramount Global’s (PARA.O) predicament is worthy of its successful “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Over the past year or so, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) has bought and increased its stake in Paramount to about 15%. Without the funding, her closely held firm might have needed to pledge more of its Paramount stock against a loan. Streaming service Paramount+ is similar to Netflix, whose enterprise is worth 5 times next year’s estimated revenue. “Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One,” from Paramount Pictures, opens in movie theaters on July 12.

Simon & Schuster paid him a $1.4 million advance for the book, new documents show. In the Simon & Schuster-published book, "So Help Me God," Pence vividly described how Trump tried to pressure him against certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 victory. Hillary Clinton received an $8 million advance for her memoir "Living History," about her time as First Lady. CNN previously reported that the book advance was estimated at being somewhere between $3 million to $4 million, though that reportedly included a contract to write a second book. An Insider analysis of financial disclosures found that members of Congress together raked in $1.8 million in 2020 from book advances and royalties.

BERLIN, June 25 (Reuters) - A far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate won a vote on Sunday to become a district leader in Europe's biggest economy for the first time, a breakthrough for the party which has hit record highs in national polls. The 10-year old AfD, with which Germany's mainstream parties officially refuse to cooperate due to its radical views, won a run-off vote in the Sonneberg district in the eastern state of Thuringia with its candidate garnering 52.8% of the vote. While far-right parties have gained ground around Europe, the strength of the AfD is particularly sensitive in Germany due to the country's Nazi past. The conservative candidate won 47.2% on Sunday. The domestic intelligence agency said this month that far-right extremism posed the biggest threat to democracy in Germany and warned voters about backing the AfD.

The Indian aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant lead combined operations in the Arabian Sea. Sanjay Atri/Indian NavyUpon Vikrant’s commissioning last year, India joined only the United Kingdom and China in commissioning a domestically built aircraft carrier in the previous three years. It has operated two aircraft carriers on two previous occasions, between 1987 and 1997, and between 2013 and 2017. But even with the advancements demonstrated by the dual-carrier operation, India’s carrier program still has question marks, said Childs from IISS. It would certainly suggest that the Indian Navy could do with more carrier aircraft,” Childs said.

June 15 (Reuters) - HarperCollins Publishers and KKR & Co (KKR.N) are among the bidders for book publisher Simon & Schuster as it pursues a sale for the second time in less than three years, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters had in February reported that Paramount Global (PARA.O), the owner of Simon & Schuster, was again seeking to sell the publisher, months after the media company's $2.2 billion deal to sell the book publisher to Penguin Random House collapsed. Last year, the U.S. Justice Department sued to stop the tie-up of Penguin and Simon & Schuster, as a combined group would have accounted for nearly half of the market for publishing rights to blockbuster books. HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment, while KKR declined to comment. Paramount is exploring a sale that could value Simon & Schuster between $2 billion and $2.5 billion and was also courting private equity buyers, Reuters reported in February, citing sources.

When a friend went for an interview at Doubleday in Manhattan, Mr. Snyder tagged along, and before long was hired as a trainee. “He could rub the material of a jacket between his thumb and forefinger,” Mr. Snyder said in The Times Magazine profile, “and in no more than a second, proclaim, ‘$3.34 a yard.’ He would be right to the penny. I had that gift of feel when it came to books.”In a climate that Mr. Snyder helped create, he billed himself as a businessman rather than as a man of letters. No one cares about Mike Pence

Pence hopes to position himself as a more traditional conservative, pushing for family values, fiscal conservatism, and an aggressive military presence abroad. He stuck with Mr. Trump through numerous controversies including the leak of the "Access Hollywood" tape, in which Mr. Trump boasted about grabbing women's genitalia. He vouched for Mr. Trump's character with skeptical evangelicals with whom Mr. Trump ultimately forged his own relationship. Portraying himself as a traditional conservative could also lead to a return to conservative media for Pence. For a time after leaving office as vice president, the Pences were homeless and appeared to be couch-surfing their way through Indiana.

A challenger for China’s world-beating Type 055sThe Pentagon estimates China’s navy to have around 340 warships at present, while the US has fewer than 300. Take China’s Type 055, in many eyes the world’s premier destroyer. The three Sejongs, which cost about $925 million each, are the pride of the South Korean fleet. All these Japanese and South Korean vessels are designed to incorporate US technology, weapons, spy radars and the Aegis command and control system. But then if the US, Japanese and South Korean ships use similar technology and can operate together, why does the law prevent the US from building some of its ships in Japanese and South Korean shipyards?

Adidas said its decision to sever ties with Ye cost the company €1.2 billion in lost sales and about €500 million in profit this year. Jonathan A. Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, which is among the groups that will benefit from the proceeds of the sale, welcomed Adidas’s decision as one fitting the complexity of the problem. But other groups noted that despite Adidas’s pledge to donate the proceeds, Ye will still make money off the sales. The Yeezy brand became a defining force in the sportswear industry and an incredibly lucrative cornerstone for Adidas. Adidas said it was considering further releases of the Yeezy inventory, but it did not give a timeline.

Poem: “Bride” by Maggie Smith Source: Simon & SchusterSince then, a huge response to her poetry and prose, including two recent bestsellers, “Keep Moving” and “Goldenrod,” has elevated her to celebrity poet status. CNN: You have said that writing about your divorce has turned you into “a divorce whisperer.” How so? Smith's recent memoir, "You Could Make This Place Beautiful" tackles divorce as well as common family terrain. If someone is going through a breakup, I tell them to remember that they predated, and have outlasted, the relationship. There’s no place I can go here where there isn’t a reminder of something that came before.
The BookTok phenomenon helped send book sales to an all-time high and reignite a love for reading. From authors to stores, the book world is turning to TikTok to drive sales and build community. Still, while authors might feel pressure to try TikTok, industry experts say it's better to focus on craft than marketing. Aster is one of the hundreds of authors who are benefitting from the success of TikTok and its book-related hashtag #BookTok. But TikTok's influence on publishing has also dialed up the pressure on authors to be marketers, as well as writers.
If there’s one living stand-up legend whose jokes are perfect for Twitter, it’s Steven Wright. Not only are they concise (“Lost a buttonhole”) but so meticulously absurd (“I like to reminisce with people I don’t know”) that rapid shifts of context don’t distort their meaning. So it was a surprise that when he started an account in 2011, he didn’t use it to try out punch lines, but to write a novel — very slowly. It almost sounds like a Steven Wright joke. “I wanted to put a funnel on Harold’s head and pour everything I think about being alive” into it, he said.
This is an as-told-to story based on a conversation with Priyanka Naik, the food blogger behind the brand Chef Priyanka. All the while, I was building my brand: Chef Priyanka. Eventually, I started getting recognition from various food media sites. Twitter gave me flexibilityOne of the reasons I stayed so long at Twitter was because of the reach and flexibility it gave me to grow Chef Priyanka. And in some ways, it was the nudge I needed to turn Chef Priyanka into a full-time gig.

Paramount Global fell as much as 17% premarket after it reported earnings and revenue that missed analyst estimates and cut its quarterly dividend. Paramount Global's traditional TV revenue, which consists of CBS and its cable networks such as MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, dropped 8% in the quarter to $5.2 billion. Media companies are struggling to replace traditional TV revenue, as customers cancel each quarter, with streaming revenue as they build out direct-to-consumer businesses. This year will represent peak losses for Paramount Global's streaming business, Bakish said. Streaming revenue from Paramount+ and Pluto TV, the company's free advertising-supported service, rose 39% to $1.5 billion.
TikTok owner ByteDance applied for a trademark for a book publishing entity called 8th Note Press. The company is also hiring staff to "discover and sign authors" and ensure "novel completion." TikTok has become a popular destination for readers to discover new books, driving up publishing sales and sparking a thriving community on the app dubbed #BookTok. Now its parent company ByteDance may be building out its own publishing arm. The company in April filed a US trademark application for a new book-publishing entity that would be called 8th Note Press.
Seoul, South Korea CNN —When the presidents of the United States and South Korea this week announced a landmark deal to deter North Korean aggression, one element of the pact stood out. Here’s what you need to know about the submarine and why it’s heading to South Korea. The Nuclear Threat Initiative at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies estimates that each Trident missile can carry four nuclear warheads, meaning each US ballistic missile submarine could be carrying about 80 nuclear warheads. One arriving in South Korea on a port visit – which must be arranged 24 to 48 hours in advance – would be far more visible, giving North Korea an advantage, Schuster said. Kim’s threats have prompted some in South Korea to call for Seoul to become a nuclear-armed power itself.
