Thanksgiving gas prices set to be the cheapest since 2020
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday travel rush, gas prices are tumbling fast. This exceeds the typical seasonal drop in gas prices during the fall and leaves the national average at a 10-month low. If prices stay near current levels, this would be the cheapest gas price on Thanksgiving Day since 2020 when Covid-19 caused many Americans to stay off the roads altogether. GasBuddy projects the national average will slide to $3.25 a gallon or lower by Thanksgiving Day, marking the lowest priced Thanksgiving Day for fuel prices in three years. By comparison, gas prices stood at $3.57 a gallon on last year’s holiday following a year of notoriously high prices.

New York CNN —Robinhood is trying hard to lure customers fed up with traditional banks that pay little to no interest on savings. To attract deposits, the stock trading app made famous by the GameStop craze is offering fatter and fatter interest rates. That’s far higher than traditional banks and among the highest in the industry. We see an opportunity to correct that,”Tenev argued this has long been part of the “playbook” of traditional banks. The Robinhood rate of 5% applies to new and existing customers of Robinhood Gold, a subscription service that costs $5 a month.

The majority recognized a difference between firearms for personal use and those the state law reserves for “trained professionals,” semiautomatic weapons, including the popular AR-15. Sullivan said it's likely that plaintiffs in one or more of the multiple cases consolidated in Friday's opinion would seek a U.S. Supreme Court review, where he predicted victory. At least eight other states and the District of Columbia have some sort of prohibition on semiautomatic weapons. The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the law on a 4-3 decision in August. And such semiautomatic weapons are the choice of many gun owners for sport shooting and hunting, they say.

“It was awfully easy money,” Charlie Munger, Buffett’s longtime lieutenant and vice chair of Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA), said in an interview with the Acquired podcast released this week. The firms backed by Berkshire — Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co., and Sumitomo — are known as “sogo shosha” or general trading companies in Japan. “These trading companies were really entrenched, old companies, and they had all these cheap copper mines and rubber plantations, and so you could borrow [easily],” Munger added. Buffett’s decision to invest in Japan has buoyed optimism about prospects in the world’s third largest economy. The legendary investor has previously cheered “the future of Japan,” casting more attention to the country from other foreign backers.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s Psyche spacecraft rocketed away Friday on a six-year journey to a rare metal-covered asteroid. SpaceX launched the spacecraft into an overcast midmorning sky from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Scientists envision spiky metal craters, huge metal cliffs and metal-encrusted eroded lava flows greenish-yellow from sulfur — “almost certain to be completely wrong,” according to Elkins-Tanton. Led by Arizona State University on NASA’s behalf, the $1.2 billion mission will use a roundabout route to get to the asteroid. So instead of arriving at the asteroid in 2026 as originally planned, the spacecraft won’t get there until 2029.

The ceremony to honor a fallen Russian soldier went viral for all the wrong reasons. The musical faux pas last May in the eastern Russian town of Kyakhta, home to a prominent infantry brigade, soon rocketed around social media. If the incident was discordant in the extreme, it also accentuated the contradictions of Vladimir Putin’s war that are changing the face of garrison towns across Russia. The local cemetery is growing exponentially. The flood of newly purchased cars in Kyakhta telegraphs loss as much as prosperity — the money comes from large government payouts to families of the dead and grievously injured.

If the Twins force Game 5, it would be in Houston on Friday. The right-hander, who threw six hitless innings in World Series Game 4 last year to beat Philadelphia, lowered his career postseason ERA to 1.91 over 37 2/3 innings. With five walks and one hit batter, Javier provided the Twins plenty of opportunities to catch up. “It was a difficult day to hit, so them jumping out early was very, very important,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. He has allowed 13 earned runs, nine walks and three homers in 14 innings over three career starts against the Astros.

MANAUS, Brazil (AP) — Communities dependent on the Amazon rainforest's waterways are stranded without supply of fuel, food or filtered water. These are just the first grim visions of extreme drought sweeping across Brazil’s Amazon. Raimundo Silva do Carmo, 67, makes his living as a fisherman, but these days has been struggling to simply find water. Like most rural residents in Brazil's Amazon, do Carmo typically retrieves water untreated from the biome's abundant waterways. PARIS, Oct 4 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron said last week his government would "take back control" of electricity prices by the end of the year, without spelling out what steps he would take. "There is a point that is key for our competitiveness, and we will announce it in October, and that is to take back control of electricity prices," Macron said. "We'll be able to announce in October electricity prices that are in line with our competitiveness," he said, adding this would apply to households and businesses. However, French officials say Germany is undermining a traditional French strength due to fears cheap nuclear electricity could provide French businesses with a competitive advantage over German companies. Under the current system, called marginal pricing, European electricity prices are linked to the most expensive power producing asset.

ORLANDO, Florida, Sept 28 (Reuters) - The 'dollar smile' can be a blessing for Wall Street, or a curse. But the speed and extent of the move in the dollar and Treasuries, and tightening of financial conditions, warrant vigilance. According to Goldman Sachs, U.S. financial conditions are the tightest this year. This is not dissimilar to other major economies and regions, some of which - the euro zone, China and emerging markets - are feeling an even tighter squeeze. It might be too early for that to appear in third-quarter results - many big Wall Street firms will have hedged their currency exposure over the near term - but if sustained, fourth-quarter profits could be affected.

"The UK has been one of the real leaders in climate diplomacy and in their own emissions reductions," Ireland’s climate minister Eamon Ryan told Reuters. But according to the Climate Change Committee’s June 2023 progress report to parliament, to hit mid-way climate targets, Britain must quadruple its annual emissions reductions outside the electricity supply sector by 2030. He said he was changing the policy because previous governments had moved too quickly to set net zero targets, without securing the support of the public. Delaying net zero transition investments could prove politically popular, analysts observed, if an election was on the horizon. But "this framing only works if you think climate policy is a burden", said Bob Ward, a climate policy researcher at the London School of Economics and Political Science, adding that avoiding short-term costs was likely to lead to a greater bill for taxpayers down the road.
