"We can now show that a meaningful pipeline of investible opportunities does exist across the economies that need finance most," Mahmoud Mohieldin, one of the U.N. appointed experts, known as U.N. After a year of meetings with stakeholders around the world, they released the initial list so that banks and others can assess the projects. "We now need a creative collaboration between project developers and public, private and concessionary finance, to unlock this investment potential and turn assets into flows," said Mohieldin, High-Level Champion for COP27. World Bank President David Malpass addressed delegates on Wednesday, running through the bank's climate efforts and involvement in a partnership under which Western nations would provide $8.5 billion to South Africa for its energy transition. This week, Sarah Belle Lin, an Insider fellow, interviews Eugene Kim, our Amazon reporter and chief tech correspondent, about covering the US's largest online retailer. You're an Amazon reporter whose expertise lies in Amazon, Jeff Bezos, Andy Jassy, e-commerce, and cloud computing. I started out as an enterprise-tech reporter in 2014 covering business software like Salesforce, Oracle, and Dropbox. We didn't have a full-time reporter covering Amazon at the time because it wasn't as big. Both of those things have been integral to Amazon's corporate culture for a very long time, so it's fair to say they are key parts to the company's success.

The U.S. budget deficit was sliced in half for fiscal 2022, the biggest drop in history following two years of huge Covid-related spending. Though still large in historical terms, the budget shortfall declined to $1.375 trillion, compared to the 2021 deficit of $2.776 trillion. Education spending totaled $639.4 billion for the fiscal year, $408 billion higher than estimated. The outlays number represented about a $550 billion decline in spending but an $850 billion increase in revenue. Prior to 2020, the highest deficit ever was $1.41 trillion 2009 as the financial crisis came to a close.
The company has created "Semaform," a way to separate news and opinion in articles. Semafor, the hotly anticipated media startup that grabbed industry attention before it even launched, is finally here. Led by former Bloomberg Media CEO Justin Smith and former New York Times media columnist and BuzzFeed News editor-in-chief Ben Smith, the outlet began publishing Tuesday morning with the lofty ambition of "solving certain significant news consumer frustrations," Justin Smith told Insider. "We have a long runway through 2023 and moving into 2024 on a revenue front and a cost front," Justin Smith said. Overall, the target readership is "very much the news omnivore" and people who are "opinion leaders" in business, finance, and tech, Justin Smith said.

That structure is designed to address issues such as a trust deficit between the public and the press, and some readers' inability to distinguish between facts and analysis, said Semafor Executive Editor Gina Chua in an interview Monday. That funding will take Semafor to the end of 2023 and into 2024, according to chief executive officer Justin Smith. At launch, Semafor said that 75% of its revenue will come from advertising and 25% from event sponsorships. Some news organizations such as Axios have had success luring readers with shorter, unconventional formats. Semafor has been preparing for its launch since January, when former New York Times media columnist Ben Smith and former Bloomberg Media Chief Executive Officer Justin Smith quit their jobs to start the venture. The Smiths will take lessons learned from more than 20 years in digital media to steer Semafor into what they hope will be a global, profitable business. Still, advertising-supported digital media is a sector known for recession droughts and low growth — with plenty of cautionary tales. Semafor will immediately stand out from legacy news publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Steet Journal or CNN.com through its unique article structure. To solve for information overload, a key flaw in the current media ecosystem, according to Justin Smith, outside media analysis will be truncated and found in the Notable section.

Will reporters at The New York Times really go on strike? The idea, unthinkable just a few months ago, is now on the lips of New York Times Guild members as the union's contract negotiations with management heat up. New York Times reporters have walked off the job before, like as part of a 1962-1963 citywide newspaper strike. But Robles said union members are upset that the Times' strong business footing has not translated into better pay. (The Times spokesperson countered that the paper was not seeing record profits).

But Robles said union members are upset that the Times' strong business footing has not translated into better pay.
At the time, I wrote about self improvement, especially as it related to work and careers. I wrote about my experience adopting the daily routines of successful and powerful people like Tim Ferris and Donald Trump. Nothing ended up panning out — fortunately, because it was around that time that things changed for me at work. My editor wrote back almost immediately: She'd take these comments into account when generating assignments. He said there was no chance of him becoming vice president. They're real," Biden told me that afternoon. Mark Bowden later asked Biden, then vice president, in his West Wing office about that marathon quote. "That was absolutely, positively true when I said it," Biden told him. I never, never, never, never aspired to be vice president.
