The Great College Pricing Sham
  + stars: | 2023-09-10 | by ( James S. Murphy | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +21 min
I use quotation marks, because merit aid is granted to half the students at public colleges and 84% at private colleges. Today the average merit-aid discount at private colleges is $23,000 — leaving the student to cover the remaining $30,000 or $40,000. At four-year public colleges, tuition now accounts for 52% of operational revenue, versus 48% from state funding. To make college more accessible, we need to make greater public investments — at both the state and federal levels — in higher education. James S. Leigh William moved her family of six from Atlanta, Georgia, to Bamberg, Germany, in 2017. A disenchantment with the American dream and need for affordable healthcare drove her relocation. She and her husband, who is German, found they didn't need the big house they strived for in the US. When we moved there, I bought a house for $270,000 in a really beautiful, lush, green suburb. We made a really substantial profit off of that house, and turned around and bought another house in Atlanta for $570,000.

Salame also pleaded guilty to conspiring to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business. Vcg | Visual China Group | Getty ImagesMUNICH — Swedish electric vehicle maker Polestar plans to launch a smartphone in December alongside deliveries of its first car to be released in China, the company's CEO told CNBC. It will be the company's first car to be delivered in China, as it ramps up expansion in the world's biggest electric vehicle market. Alongside that, Polestar will take the unusual move of launching a smartphone carrying the brand's name. It stems from a joint venture created in June between Polestar and Xingji Meizu, a Chinese smartphone maker owned by Chinese auto giant Geely . And the Polestar smartphone would not be an attempt to grow market share.

Federal auto safety regulators moved Tuesday toward a recall of about 52 million airbag inflaters used by a dozen major carmakers, calling the parts unsafe and susceptible to rupture. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration scheduled a public meeting on Oct. 5 on its recommendation to recall the airbags, manufactured by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive Systems. ARC rejected the agency’s initial findings that its airbags were defective. Of the 52 million airbags, 41 million were manufactured by ARC and 11 million were produced by Delphi using a design licensed by ARC. The airbags were variously made in China, Mexico and Knoxville, Tenn., and were used by a dozen major carmakers: BMW, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Stellantis, Tesla, Toyota and Volkswagen.

DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. government is taking a big step toward forcing a defiant Tennessee company to recall 52 million air bag inflators that could explode, hurl shrapnel and injure or kill people. NHTSA is trying to force ARC to recall inflators in driver and passenger front air bags from at least a dozen automakers. Neither ARC nor the auto industry has released a full list of vehicle models with the kind of air bag inflators that have exploded. But at least 25 million of the 284 million vehicles on U.S. roads are believed to contain them. ____This story has been corrected to show that at least 25 million vehicles could have the ARC air bag inflators, not 33 million.

That could rise to $5.2 billion if the banks underwriting the IPO exercise an option to buy additional shares from SoftBank. In 2020, SoftBank tried to offload Arm to Nvidia for $40 billion, in what would have been the biggest chip deal of all time. The company’s return to the public market is being closely watched as it promises to be the biggest US IPO since 2021. Arm made nearly $2.7 billion in revenue in the fiscal year ended March, according to its prospectus. SoftBank will continue to own approximately 90% of Arm’s shares following the listing, according to the filing.

"The major shareholders are certainly not the reason for the poor valuation of the share," Wolfgang Porsche, who leads the supervisory boards of both Porsche SE (PSHG_p.DE) and Porsche AG, told Reuters on the sidelines of the IAA car show in Munich. The Porsche and Piech families essentially control Volkswagen via their holding firm Porsche SE, which holds most of the voting rights in the Wolfsburg-based carmaker. "We have to get an even better grip on performance and costs," Porsche, 80, said, adding Volkswagen had to become more competitive. With a view to its competitors, the group could not assume that it would be able to avoid cutting costs, Porsche, who also sits on Volkswagen's supervisory board, said. Regarding the families' closely-watched succession planning, Porsche said that his nephew, Ferdinand Oliver Porsche, who also sits on the supervisory boards of Volkswagen, Porsche SE and Porsche AG, was a natural future successor were he to step down.

There are bands that are challenging to get into, and then there is the Armed. Its self-produced, highly weird music videos have a “Jackass”-meets-David Lynch aesthetic, with surprisingly advanced production values for an obscure Midwestern hardcore group. The Armed considers itself more of a collective or an art project than a band, with dozens of rotating members. Now, the Armed has a grand opportunity to capitalize on its years of toiling in relative obscurity. Harder acts like Scowl, Gel and Zulu are thriving, and Turnstile, the Baltimore-based hardcore group, has found a way to bridge hardcore to the mainstream.

CNN —The Lamborghini Lanzador is only a concept car for now, but the Italian supercar maker says it offers a preview of the brand’s very first fully electric model which will go into production in 2028. With no space needed for a gas engine — in a gas-powered Lamborghini sports car, it would be behind the seats — the Lanzador has small back seats. Other automakers, like Rimac and Automobili Pininfarina (which uses Rimac technology), already sell electric two-seat supercars costing millions of dollars. Porsche — which like Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen Group — took a similar approach with its first EV. Lamborghini has committed to selling only “electrified vehicles,” meaning either plug-in hybrid or fully electric, by the end of 2024.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 index slipped 0.3% at the open, with basic resources shedding 1.4% to lead losses as most sectors and major bourses traded in the red. The European blue chip index closed Monday's session up 0.1% as markets appeared to enter suspended animation after last week's global pullback, as investors took profits near the end of earnings season and risk sentiment returned to focus. A Reuters poll of economists produced a consensus forecast for the July print of 3.3% year on year, up from 3% in June. Aston Martin flips from cash-guzzler to carmaker

LONDON, Aug 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Aston Martin Lagonda (AML.L) is making a painful transition from cash-guzzler to viable carmaker. A 216 million pound cash call on Monday brings its total capital raised since 2018 to just under 1.8 billion pounds. By this year, Aston Martin will have grown revenue by 13% per annum since 2019, according to Refinitiv data, thanks to new models like the DB12 and higher prices. Aston’s current enterprise value is just under 2 times forecast 2024 sales, a discount to Porsche, and far below Ferrari’s (RACE.MI) more than 8 times multiple. Yet Aston still needs to show it can make an electric vehicle, with the first due in 2025.

While charging and fueling trucks cost the same, other cars and their electric counterparts differ. It's not yet cheaper to charge some electric cars than to fuel them with gas, a new study suggests. It's not yet cheaper to charge many electric cars than it would be to fuel their gas-powered counterparts up with gas, a new study indicates. Trucks cost about the same to fuel and charge, while entry and midlevel cars and SUVs cost more to charge at home and in public than they do to fuel at a gas station, the group found.
