He’s had some up-and-down years through injury and offensive woes, but this season Jackson has been back to his best, leading a No. 1 playoff seed and, while the year ended in playoff disappointment, Jackson had delivered one of the best regular seasons ever by an NFL quarterback. Jackson speaks after winning the NFL MVP award at the end of the 2019 season. “To be honest with you, I really didn’t care for other teams, really,” Jackson told reporters during his signing press conference. That’s the accolade that I really want so bad.”And now, with a second NFL MVP almost certainly sewn up, don’t bet again Jackson lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy on February 11.

Gold slides on brewing concerns of U.S. rate cuts still far off
  + stars: | 2024-01-11 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,024.99 per ounce, after rising as much as 0.8% before the data. The dollar index extended gains after data showed U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in December, which could delay a much anticipated U.S. rate cut in March. Traders see a 67% probability of a rate cut in March, according to the CME FedWatch tool, compared with about a 71% chance seen before the report. Higher rates dim the appeal of gold, which pays no interest.

On an annual basis, inflation ticked up to 3.4% from 3.1% previously. The core CPI, stripping out energy and food costs, was unchanged but dipped down to 3.9% annually from 4% in November. Government measures of housing costs tend to lag market rates, which have been trending down for apartment rental rates lately. The central bank decided at its meeting last month to leave interest rates unchanged while also penciling in at least three cuts in 2024. The Fed did warn that, should the economy perform stronger than expected, it retains the option to increase interest rates, though the probability of that is seen as low.

CNN —Democratic Rep. Adam Smith on Friday condemned intimidation and violence pushed by political “extremes” after he said his Washington state home was vandalized by activists pushing for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The administration has supported “humanitarian pauses” and pushed to extend the recent truce in the fighting. Smith told Phillip that to his “knowledge” as of Friday evening, authorities do not have any leads on who was responsible. The congressman pointed to the incident as part of a “very problematic” trend of threats against elected officials. “We need to have respect for civil society and representative democracy and know how to disagree with each other without going to this level of intimidation,” Smith said.

Lisa Phillip, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at an Orlando charter school, appreciates many of Florida’s new guidelines for teaching civics. And she doesn’t mind teaching about “the influence of the Judeo-Christian tradition” on the nation’s founding documents. The subject prompted her students at Central Florida Leadership Academy to reflect on how the country’s politics, they believed, fell short of the basic morality in the Ten Commandments. This fall, Ms. Phillip is one of thousands of social studies teachers adjusting to a hotly debated overhaul of civics in several conservative states. The revamp is led by Republican governors — Ron DeSantis of Florida, Kristi Noem of South Dakota and Glenn Youngkin of Virginia — who have also restricted how race and gender are discussed in schools.

"If there is a regime shift, then what has worked could be quite different from what does work," McLennan said. That means the growth stocks that dominated for years may come back to earth in the mid-2020s. CNN —The most anticipated season of “The Crown” has arrived, and no one’s losing much sleep over the Queen this time. One of the many things that captivated viewers when “The Crown” arrived in 2016 was its cinematic scale. The lines between episodes one and three of season six, by contrast, are impossible to draw. As “The Crown” tells it, Al-Fayed’s relentless campaign to see his son Dodi and Diana engaged and thus secure British citizenship is almost as culpable for their deaths as the crash itself. Diana’s final night in Paris is rendered as the fatal culmination of Al-Fayed’s engineering of their relationship, and his pressure on Dodi to propose.

When Treasury yields go up, so do mortgage rates; when they go down, mortgage rates tend to follow. Surging mortgage rates over the past few years have sent home loan applications and home sales down sharply. The 30-year fixed rate mortgage was also advancing towards 8% — a level not seen since the dot-com bubble popped in 2000. Those raging Treasury yields brought pain to investors and also increased how much American companies had to pay to service their debts. In fact, Wall Street is struggling to figure out what it means for the timing and scale of future rate cuts.

Fed officials don’t expect inflation to reach 2% until 2026, according to their latest economic projections released in September. If there’s one thing that would make the Fed quake in its boots, it would be worsening inflation expectations. The keyword there is “timely.”Sticky inflation could possibly “un-anchor” inflation expectations or elicit a consistent deterioration in Americans’ perception on inflation. “The Fed really just wants people to not expect inflation will run at 4% forever.”So what’s kept inflation expectations in check this long? For individuals and married people filing separately, the new federal standard deduction will increase to $14,600, up from $13,850 this year.
