CNN —The Trump rally shooter searched online for information on the arrest of a Michigan mass shooter and his parents, who were prosecuted in a 2021 high school shooting. A week before the shooting, Thomas Matthew Crooks searched online for the date of the Democratic National Convention and where Trump planned to speak, as well as other searches for Trump and President Joe Biden. Unlike other mass shooters who often leave behind manifestos or writings to explain their attack, Crooks left behind few clues, in his bedroom or online. Investigators have focused on Crooks’ online activity in the months and days before the attack. He searched for the date and location of the Democratic National Convention, which takes place in August in Chicago, and for the location of the Trump rally.

That suggests Crooks may have been looking to carry out a high-profile shooting, and the Trump event’s proximity and timing offered the most accessible opportunity, federal officials have speculated. Crooks had also searched for information on another recent mass shooter who shot and killed four classmates at a Michigan high school in 2021. Obtained by CNNBut there are also significant differences between Crooks’ behavior and that of a typical mass shooter. Nearly seven years after America’s deadliest mass shooting, investigators still do not know why Paddock pulled the trigger. CNN —Thomas Matthew Crooks visited the Donald Trump rally location twice, his cell phone contained images of both Trump and President Joe Biden, and the would-be assassin’s search history included dates of the Democratic National Convention as well as future Trump events, three US officials told CNN. A US official briefed on the matter, however, later told CNN that investigators believe the account in his name is fake. Secret Service agents killed Crooks after he opened fire. The Secret Service director later offered to answer the senators’ questions at another time and moved to leave. On Friday, he went to a shooting range where he was a member, and practiced firing, a law enforcement official told CNN. Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Investigators parsing through his online search history haven’t found any indication of him researching how to make home-made explosives, law enforcement officials said. While investigators had hoped that breakthough would help them understand what drove him to attempt to assassinate Trump, they’re still struggling to make sense of it, law enforcement officials said. But they didn’t seem to know much about what was going on in his life recently, law enforcement sources said.

CNN —Nearly 48 hours after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Thomas Matthew Crooks’ mindset and possible motives for his attack. The FBI on Monday said in a statement that it accessed Crooks’ phone and that investigators conducted “nearly 100 interviews of law enforcement personnel, event attendees, and other witnesses.”However, the FBI did not say what it found on Crooks’ phone or on other materials. The investigative steps are part of the FBI’s initial investigation of the July 13 shooting at a Trump rally. Authorities say he fired multiple shots from a building rooftop just outside the rally venue before he was killed by Secret Service agents. The shooter’s parents, who have been cooperating with law enforcement since the assassination attempt, have said Crooks did not appear to have friends and did not appear to have any political leanings, the official said.

The FBI said Sunday that the shooter at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania acted alone and that it is still actively investigating the shooter’s background – including working to gain access to his phone. “We are working to get access to the phone,” Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said Sunday. Rojek confirmed the gun used in the shooting was an AR-style rifle that was purchased legally. FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate also said the FBI is “seeing that tick up in the aftermath of this event. “The violence we saw yesterday is an attack on democracy itself,” Garland said.

Seconds after gunfire rang out, Secret Service counter-assault snipers began shooting the suspect who was found on top of a roof. They put it out over their radio to keep an eye on him- and that information was passed to Secret Service as well, according to the source. The Secret Service does not allow any weapons inside the cordoned off areas of any event. In a statement, the Secret Service said the detail had been increased recently. “”There’s an untrue assertion that a member of the former President’s team requested additional security resources and that those were rebuffed,” said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

CNN —A piece of woolly mammoth skin excavated from the Siberian permafrost has been found to contain fossil chromosomes in a first-of-its-kind discovery, according to a new study. The new study revealed that fossils of ancient chromosomes survive in this skin sample. But the DNA from elephants was also needed to assemble the mammoth genome. The researchers hope to use the findings to assemble the woolly mammoth genome completely. “This structural information provides insights into functions of the woolly mammoth genome that were invisible using previous genomic methods,” Heintzman said in an email.

The finger-saving technology has been likened to airbags in cars — a straightforward but ingenious safety solution — but many of Gluesenkamp Perez’s friends didn’t see it that way. They were worried that a government mandate would increase the cost of a new table saw by hundreds of dollars, while also giving SawStop, the company that developed the technology, an effective monopoly. Too often, she believes, policymakers are not only disrespectful to people who work with their hands, but also ignorant of the reality of their day-to-day lives. In April, she introduced legislation that would prohibit the commission from implementing the rule until five years after SawStop’s patent expires. The purpose of the network was to smuggle people, not bring in terrorists, one of the officials said. There was specific “derogatory information” linking those individuals to ISIS, the official said. In the latest case, the 400 migrants under scrutiny – mostly from Central Asian nations – are being screened purely because of their connection to the human smuggling network. The leadership of ISIS-K is mainly made up of Tajik nationals and the group has recruited from both countries. Tajik nationals have carried out a series of recent attacks in Europe on behalf of the group, including the Crocus Hall attack in Moscow in March that killed more than 100 people.

The plea deal allows Assange to avoid prison in the US and return to his native Australia. “That never came up in our conversations,” said David Stilwell, the State Department assistant secretary for the Pacific region during the Trump administration. Sessions’ focus on national security-related leaks was “probably one of the reasons why the [Assange] case had more traction,” Hickey told CNN. Hickey said he was not involved in the Assange case when he was a senior official at DOJ’s National Security Division from 2016 to 2023. Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesAttorneys for Donald Trump will continue their legal efforts to throw off special counsel Jack Smith and the classified documents case against the former president in Florida on Monday. Trump’s attorneys will battle prosecutors in court on the second part of Trump’s argument that Smith’s appointment was illegitimate, focusing on how he’s being funded. On Friday, prosecutors, defense attorneys and third parties fought over whether Smith was legitimately appointed as special counsel, an argument district Judge Aileen Cannon seemed skeptical of during the hearing. “President Biden’s DOJ is paying for this politically motivated prosecution of Biden’s chief political rival ‘off the books,’ without accountability or authorization,” Trump’s attorneys argued in their filing earlier this year.

The plea deal must still be approved by a federal judge, but as of Monday morning, Assange had been released from a UK prison, according to WikiLeaks. A federal judge in the Northern Mariana Islands set a plea hearing and sentencing for Wednesday morning, according to the US District Court there. New York CNN —Prosecutors are urging the US Justice Department to file criminal charges against Boeing for safety issues surrounding its 737 Max, although top Justice Department officials haven’t made a final decision, a source familiar with the development tells CNN. And this month a group of those family members wrote a letter to the Justice Department urging Boeing be hit with the maximum possible $24.9 billion fine. The charges against Boeing don’t mean any Boeing executive will face charges as an individual. It has posted core operating losses of $31.9 billion since the start of the 20-month grounding of the 737 Max that followed its second fatal crash in 2019. But if the company faces criminal charges, a new settlement is the most likely outcome.

New York CNN —Families that lost loved ones in two Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday that the company committed the “deadliest corporate crime in US history” and asked the Justice Department to fine the company the maximum $24 billion it could face in a criminal trial. The families wrote to the Department of Justice asking for the fine as the US government considers criminal prosecution of Boeing. The letter also asks the Justice Department for an independent corporate monitor to oversee Boeing’s safety measures and to direct it in its efforts to improve its quality. The 2021 deferred prosecution agreement that Boeing reached with the Justice Department was harshly criticized by the family members and some members of Congress at that time. Boeing agreed to pay $2.5 billion, but most of that money - $1.77 billion – was paid to the airlines that owned the grounded planes, money that Boeing had already agreed to pay.
