Urban Outfitters, the young adult retailer known for its alternative, vintage-inspired styles, learned this the hard way. Urban Outfitters is now staging a turnaround, with the ambition of finding the success of rivals like Abercrombie & Fitch. But while Urban Outfitters may be trying to pull off a turnaround at the same scale is Abercrombie’s, the action points of both differ. Urban Outfitters, meanwhile, has maintained its youthful appearance without doing enough to market toward the high schoolers and college students of today. Urban Outfitters did not return a request for comment on the marketing strategy behind the lower prices.

About 3.3% of high school students identify as transgender and another 2.2% have at some point questioned if they were one, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one-quarter, 26%, of trans and questioning students attempted suicide in the past year compared with 11% of cisgender female students and 5% of cisgender male students, the CDC found. Trans students were also more likely to report being bullied at school, consistent with previous research on the subject. An estimated 40% of trans and questioning students said they were bullied at school, compared to 20.3% of cis female students and 14.8% of cis male students. Significantly more trans students and questioning students, at 10.7% and 10%, respectively, reported experiencing unstable housing in the past 30 days, compared to 1.8% of cisgender female students and 2.1% of cisgender male students.

Where are Gen Z's tech founders?
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Amanda Hoover | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +10 min
So where are Gen Z's tech founders? Gen Z founders and would-be founders are stepping into a vastly different tech world from that of their predecessors — a world where launching a unicorn is far more difficult, and publicly scrutinized, than it was for the garage-band generation of Jobs and Gates. Gen Z is coming of age in an era when the same Big Tech companies are diffuse and dominant. In other words, millennial founders ran so that Gen Z founders could walk. Perhaps we won't see Gen Z founders standing before a crowd and unveiling their latest shiny products anytime soon.

Fourteen attorneys general, led by officials in New York and California, filed lawsuits Tuesday accusing the social media platform TikTok of damaging young users’ mental health and collecting their data without consent. “Young people are struggling with their mental health because of addictive social media platforms like TikTok,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. In recent years, a growing number of health professionals have sounded the alarm about the effects of excessive social media use on mental and physical health, particularly among children and teenagers. Earlier this year, the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled the CEOs of TikTok, Meta and X during a hearing about online child safety and youth mental health. But the service’s rise has been shadowed by concerns about mental health, as well as national security.

To combat such ideas, the Evangelical Environmental Network hosts webinars on the science of climate change and how faith connects to climate action. “Some pastors get kind of hung up talking about climate change, but to me, it’s biblical faithfulness 101,” he said in an interview.

Since August, we’ve been talking weekly with a group of young voters who are torn among Donald Trump, Kamala Harris and a write-in choice, to track their changing opinions. These undecided voters are really, really troubled by Trump’s refusal to admit he lost the 2020 election (and Vance’s refusal to say that in the debate). But Tim Walz’s question to Vance at the debate — did Trump lose the 2020 election? But I don’t know if I trust Trump to be a normal person for the next three months,” said Lillian, a 27-year-old Virginian who voted for Trump in 2020 but is now undecided. These voters suggest that Trump should be more worried than Harris right now.

New York CNN —A bipartisan group of 14 attorneys general from across the country filed lawsuits on Tuesday against TikTok, alleging that the platform has “addicted” young people and harmed their mental health. And last month, 42 state attorneys general called on US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to require labels on social media apps warning of their potential harm to young users. It also alleges that TikTok “challenges,” viral trends where users try to replicate videos created by others, can encourage dangerous behavior among young users. TikTok previously cooperated with New York authorities to remove subway surfing content, the New York Times reported in January. The lawsuit seeks financial penalties against TikTok, including a requirement that the platform repay any profits it received from ads directed to New York teens or pre-teens.

Schwalb's suit alleges a slew of "profound" mental health risks are posed to teens and children by compulsive TikTok use, including depression, anxiety, sleep loss and body dysmorphia. "TikTok knows that its design features make its App more addictive and keep users engaged for longer," the suit in D.C. Superior Court alleges. The complaint also says that in 2019, the company introduced "two new dangerous features": a live-streaming feature called TikTok LIVE and a virtual currency system called TikTok "Coins." TikTok incentivizes users to go LIVE by promising these monetary rewards 'the more popular [their] content becomes.'" The suit says that TikTok "earns substantial revenue" from its Coins, charging commissions of up to 50% on each transaction.

TOKYO — A regional airport in southwest Japan was closed on Wednesday after a U.S. bombshell, most likely dropped during World War II to stem “kamikaze” attacks, exploded near its runway, causing nearly 90 flight cancellations. Miyazaki Airport shut its runway after the explosion caused a crater 23 feet wide and nearly 3 feet deep in the middle of the taxiway next to the runway, according to a Japanese transport ministry official. No injuries were reported, but live cam footage showed an airplane had been taxiing nearby just two minutes before the explosion, according to local broadcaster MRT. Multiple unexploded bombs have previously been found at Miyazaki airport, the transport ministry official said. More than 79 years since the end of the war, unexploded bombs from the intense airstrikes are still found across Japan today.

On the vice presidential debate stage Tuesday night, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio conceded that Republicans needed to do a better job of talking to women about the issue of abortion. I want to support fertility treatments.”It was a shift from Trump's comments, in which he has repeatedly tried to hold out the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade as something the public had overwhelmingly wanted. Vance did go on to say that he and Trump were consistent that abortion policies should differ from state to state to represent a “diverse” country. "Listen, abortion is a very personal issue, very personal, very private issue for women all across the country. He brags about how great it was that he put the judges in and overturned Roe v. Dame Maggie Smith, one of Britain’s best-known actresses on stage and screen, has died, her sons announced in a statement shared by their publicist Clair Dobbs. She was 89. Smith began her acting career on stage in the 1950s and in 1964, she played Desdemona to Laurence Olivier’s Othello, before reprising the role for the film version the following year. She came to the notice of younger viewers as the strict but fair witchcraft teacher Minerva McGonagall in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, also appearing in several “Harry Potter” sequels. In her later years, Smith became a role model for ageing gracefully, a process she handled with her customary charm and wit.
