Sports streaming venture Venu priced at $42.99 a month

Venu Sports, the sports streaming joint venture between Disney's ESPN, Warner Bros. The high-end pricing — common in direct-to-consumer sports streaming services — was expected in part so it wouldn't shake up any carriage agreements with traditional pay TV distributors. Live sports remain the highest rated TV programming and are the most costly part of the pay TV bundle. Users who sign up for Venu at $42.99 a month will have access to that entry pricing for 12 months, Venu noted Thursday — signaling there could be price increases ahead. The upcoming bundle will be priced at $16.99 a month with ads, and $29.99 a month ad-free.

CNN —In an Olympic competition where participants generally use all the available equipment at their disposal to get ahead, Turkey’s Yusuf Dikeç offered a masterclass in nonchalance during the air pistol mixed team competition Tuesday – and went viral for it. In 2006, the hulking office building at 135 West 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan sold for $332 million. Tenants occupied nearly every floor; offices were in demand; real estate was booming. On Wednesday, it changed hands again, in an unusual online auction — for $8.5 million. Several large Manhattan office buildings have sold in recent years at steep discounts, some going for less than half of what the previous owners paid, in a market that has yet to hit rock bottom. But office developers and sales brokers in New York City said they could not recall another large Manhattan building like 135 West 50th that had been sold for so little.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.

Ledecky, 27, has reigned in the event, then, for more than half her life. In winning her first gold in Paris and her 12th Olympic medal overall — tied for the most by an American female swimmer with Jenny Thompson — she reaffirmed her credentials in one of sports’ more exclusive clubs: Were the swimmers with the 20 fastest times in the 1,500 to all gather at the pool, Ledecky would be racing alone, which, to be fair, is what it looks like on television.

New York CNN —Millions of sports fans and concertgoers are being duped by a deceptive pricing scheme at StubHub that hides the true cost of tickets until the very last moment, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Washington, DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb. The lawsuit accuses StubHub of deploying pricing tactics that “trick” consumers into overpaying for tickets and are designed to boost profits. “StubHub uses a classic bait-and-switch scheme,” the lawsuit said, describing what’s known as “drip pricing” where only part of the product’s price is advertised initially. “We strongly support federal and state solutions that enhance existing laws to empower consumers, such as requiring all-in pricing uniformly across platforms.”According to the lawsuit, StubHub did use an “all-in pricing” model from 2014 to 2015 where the advertised prices included the mandatory fees. However, the company abandoned that more transparent model after testing found that customers were more likely to ultimately buy tickets when those fees are only shown at the end, the lawsuit said.

They had much the same experience on Tuesday as they recaptured their gold medal in dominant fashion. Here are five takeaways as Team USA leaves Bercy Arena in western Paris with another gold medal. The Olympic team gold medal was Biles’ eighth at a Games, more than any other American in history. At 27 years old, with her first gold in these Paris Olympics, Biles is now the oldest American woman ever to win gymnastics gold. The Italian gymnastics team and Team USA celebrated together, sharing a sweet moment hugging one another.

Well, a new Google ad says artificial intelligence can now do that for you. It shows the young girl training to compete like her hero, thanks to hurdling technique tips generated by Google’s AI search feature. But many early AI tools seem to do the opposite, instead enabling computers to generate traditionally human creative outputs such as art, music and stories. And yet tech firms have forged ahead with rolling out AI tools that can create new emojis, speak and even generate videos. The French swimmer Léon Marchand understood that he would be his country’s marquee athlete at the Paris Games, and he surely is. Marchand, 22, has ascended to the top of the swimming world just in time for his home country to host the Games, and as one of France’s best — and earliest — hopes for Olympic gold. Carrying the weight of a nation’s hopes can be an uncommonly heavy burden for any athlete, and Marchand will not bear it alone, of course. Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 sensation who just completed his rookie season with the N.B.A.’s San Antonio Spurs, will lead France’s men’s basketball team. The economics of the Olympics

“This will be the first Olympics, since Sydney, where the total costs are coming in under $10 billion,” said Victor Matheson, a College of the Holy Cross professor of economics who has researched the financial costs of the Olympics. Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood. Still, economists say, it may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound. “I love the Olympics, and I love sporting events, but I just really do not think that the way the Olympics works now is a viable business model,” Phalin said.

CNN —For many nations — not least the US — the upcoming Paris Olympics will take place against a background of deep political and social division. If you saw any of the European Athletics Championships events last month, you may well have been struck, as I was, by just how many Black athletes featured on podiums. At the Summer Olympics, the USA team will also feature numerous Black athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles, sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and the (current) fastest man on earth, Noah Lyles. As you watch the Olympics this summer, take note of the sports in which Black people represent the USA and European countries. So no, Black athletes are not naturally better at some sports — they take the narrower opportunities open to them and work incredibly hard on their self-belief to make it to that podium.
