It was a chemical reaction that sparked the massive fire and toxic smoke plume at a lab in Georgia that threatened nearby communities and metropolitan Atlanta in September, according to the findings released by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB). The board released its findings Friday following an investigation into the Sept. 29 chemical fire at a BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia. The safety board said the main substances involved were a collection of chemicals that are commonly used for cleaning and disinfecting: bromochloro-5,5-dimethylimidazolidine-2,4-dione (BCDMH), trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) and sodium dichloroisocyanurate (DCCA). “The resulting massive plumes of toxic smoke contained chlorine and other hazardous substances and caused significant offsite impacts,” the CSB said. The board will provide its findings and recommendations in its final investigation report.

Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., the first openly transgender person elected to serve in Congress, on Sunday called House Republicans’ moves to ban her from using women’s bathrooms in the Capitol “mean-spirited” and an “attempt to misdirect” from other policy priorities. The NFL classed the gesture as "unsportsmanlike conduct," and fined Mahomes $14,069. This isn't the first time Mahomes has been fined for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game against the Buffalo Bills. [END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. He's going to sign some executive actions, but he's also going to then begin to roll out this plan. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

Government officials met with tribal leaders in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday to try to mediate a ceasefire between rival sectarian groups after days of clashes that have killed at least 68 people and injured dozens. The clashes started after gunmen attacked convoys of civilian vehicles on Thursday, killing at least 40, mostly Shi’ite Muslims. That sparked retaliatory attacks against Sunni residents and there have been pitched battles between armed groups from both sides. Armed Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims have engaged in tribal and sectarian rivalry for decades over a land dispute in Kurram district near the Afghanistan border. The delegation met with Shi’ite leaders and stayed overnight to meet with Sunni leaders on Sunday to try to broker a ceasefire deal and then move to resolve the matter, he said in a statement.

Many families have been effectively cutting a second rent check to send their kids to day care, according to new data from the Department of Labor. On average, families spent anywhere from $6,552 to as much as $15,600 on full-day care per child in 2022, the latest year with available data. While incomes also range widely throughout the country, households typically funnel between about 9% and 16% of their annual income on day care per child. But while child care costs help explain Americans’ economic dissatisfaction, an NBC News analysis of the Labor Department and election result data also hints at the limits of the issue politically. The most forbidding child care markets in 2022 voted two years later for Trump by higher margins than the nation overall, but so did many of the areas where child care was more affordable.

You may not know it by looking at sticker prices in grocery aisles, but Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable than it has been in years. “If your dollar had the same overall purchasing power as a consumer in 1984 … this would be the least expensive Thanksgiving meal in the 39-year history of the AFBF Thanksgiving survey, other than the outlier of 2020,” the authors wrote. Target is offering a $20 Thanksgiving meal for four, including a small turkey, canned vegetables and stovetop stuffing mix. Walmart is promoting an “inflation-free Thanksgiving” meal of 29 items that can serve eight people for $56. “Don’t be afraid to check out multiple retailers.”Some Thanksgiving meal packages offer more ingredients, but that could mean preparing more dishes from scratch.

Some of the nation’s leading civil rights groups told NBC News that they are gearing up for a flood of legal battles to protect the protesters. America First Legal alleges in the suits that the State Department, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education have protected pro-Hamas extremists. PARIS — Most have on jeans, some wear rough work boots, and one sings with a white construction helmet tucked under his arm. The 80-strong choir has come together to do more than sing, though — the crew of architects, stonemasons, archaeologists, art historians, art conservators and others have helped rebuild Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral after a fire ripped through the iconic French Gothic masterpiece nearly five years ago. Much like the building and rebuilding of a cathedral, a small army of individuals needs to work in unison to create extraordinary music. Just weeks before, she and her husband had taken their children to visit the cathedral — and now it was at risk of being reduced to rubble and ashes, she remembers. “Everyone was very sad and very anxious about the potential collapse of the cathedral overnight,” she said.

Despite receiving complaints of exploitation from students, Bondi and then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris both declined to join the investigation. Harris attacked Trump in the 2020 and 2024 elections and painted him as a business fraud and threat to democracy. Forecasters are increasingly calling for a cold, soggy Thanksgiving week as west-to-east winter-pattern storms continued to roll across the continental landscape. The possibly wet, snowy and cold weather could meet what's anticipated to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel week to-date, the Transportation Security Administration said. A diagonal, low-pressure front accompanied by rain, snow and dipping temperatures was possible for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thanksgiving, the federal Weather Prediction Center said. The National Weather Service office for Minneapolis said in a forecast discussion that ice-cold air was likely to arrive midweek. They're trying to figure out what to do. They're trying to figure out what to do. Thanks to muscle memory from the tariffs Trump imposed in 2018, he says, many businesses are speeding up their shipping schedules — racing to get as many goods as possible into the country before any new tariffs are implemented. So did dryers, even though they weren't subject to tariffs — companies figured customers would assume that two related products were subject to the same inflationary forces.
