NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are greeted by the crew of the International Space Station on June 6, 2024. In 2012, during an earlier trip to the International Space Station, she became the first person to finish a triathlon in space. The 79-year-old man sat silently in the back of the courtroom on Long Island, 20 miles from his home in Queens. Here the man, Robin Davis, settled in for what promised to be a strange trial in this mostly empty room. His lawsuit centered on the actions of a person long dead. His adversaries were Long Island bureaucrats who had never heard of that person or his reported misdeeds. Mr. Davis had long been widely known for his philanthropy on behalf of one cause: fighting child abuse.

AdvertisementSt. Louis FedDespite the Sahm Rule's impressive history, it is sometimes criticized because it fails to account for rising labor participation, which can raise the unemployment rate. In addition to downcast labor market data, the ISM Manufacturing Index fell further into contraction territory this week, signaling that US manufacturing continues to slow. The market's direction also depends on how investors interpret interest rate cuts alongside future data. Fed funds rate futures markets are now pricing in a 50-basis-point cut in September, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Jan is the first person in Australia to be convicted of forced marriage since it was criminalized in 2013. Sakina Muhammad Jan was the first person convicted under Australia's forced marriage laws. Some of the measures borrow from forced-marriage laws in Britain, where hundreds of people take out protection orders each year to thwart an impending forced marriage. Other countries such as France, Canada and Germany also have specific laws against forced marriage. A month before Jan’s sentencing, the immigration minister circulated a directive specifically naming the crime of forced marriage as serious enough to warrant the removal of a visa.

Investors who are camped out in cash are nabbing sweet yields, but the clock is ticking on that attractive income. Money market fund assets totaled $6.14 trillion as of the week ended July 24, according to the Investment Company Institute . The largest money market funds are offering an annualized 7-day current yield of 5.12%, per the Crane 100 Money Fund Index. "Investors must also remember that the liquid securities held in money market funds have maturities capped at slightly over a year," he said. While these short-term bonds may be an attractive alternative to hiding out in cash, investors should avoid making them the lion's share of their fixed income holdings.

CNN —The House voted on Wednesday to create a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. A resolution to establish the task force was approved in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 416 to 0. The House task force will be made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats and will have subpoena authority, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries announced this week. Congress has moved swiftly to investigate the security failures that led to the shooting on July 13. On Monday, Cheatle was grilled at length by the House Oversight Committee over security failures related to the assassination attempt.

Speaker Mike Johnson and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, have struck a deal to form a bipartisan task force to lead the congressional investigations into the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump. The two leaders planned to announce their deal for the task force, which would be led by Republicans who control the House but would be nearly evenly divided between them and Democrats, later Tuesday morning. “The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking,” Mr. Johnson, of Louisiana, and Mr. Jeffries, of New York, said in a joint statement. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”The task force, which they said was being stood up “in response to bipartisan demands for answers,” is to be made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats. That is an uncommonly narrow split in the House, where the majority usually gives itself a substantial partisan edge on committees to ensure that its side maintains a firm grip on power.

On Sunday, the American clinched the Open Championship to claim the second major of his career. South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence finished one shot behind Rose and Horschel in tied-fourth, with American Russell Henley a further stroke back. Yet the attacks were coming from all angles now, the most ferocious of all from playing partner Lawrence and Schauffele, two holes ahead. The steely-eyed barrage continued with two more birdies across the next three holes to open up a three shot lead. Rose and Lawrence had barely erred, each bogeying just once, but such was the relentless pace set by Schauffele.

"It's a very momentum-driven market," said Ben Klein, the cofounder at the record label and music-marketing firm Hundred Days. Still, for some artists, albums can be a useful tool for marketing, streaming economics, and nourishing their biggest fans. Reuters —Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year, despite concerns that US support for Kyiv could potentially diminish if Republican candidate Donald Trump returns to the White House. German aid to Ukraine will be cut to €4 billion ($4.35 billion) in 2025 from around €8 billion in 2024, according to a draft of the 2025 budget seen by Reuters. Germany has faced criticism for repeatedly missing a NATO target of spending 2% of its economic output on defense. Days after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a “Zeitenwende” – German for historic turning point - with a €100 billion special fund to bring the military up to speed. The defense budget is set to receive a meagre €1.3 billion more than in 2024, far below the €6.7 billion requested by Pistorius.

London CNN —Pernod Ricard is selling most of its wine brands, as wine consumption is falling globally, and will instead focus on growing its champagne and premium spirits labels, including in the United States. The deal comes after wine consumption globally hit a 27-year low last year, according to an estimate by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), an industry group. “The divestment (by Pernod Ricard) makes sense as the segment has been underperforming for a while now and the global wine market is still challenging,” Sarah Barrett, the executive editor of Wine & Spirits Daily, a US-based trade publication, told CNN. Pernod Ricard is also doubling down on American whiskey. Falling wine consumption globally has collided with severe pressures on wine production, forcing many vineyards in Europe to close their doors.
