Darryl George was suspended from his Texas high school over the length of his locs hairstyle. He was given another round of suspension, a civil rights activist helping his family, Dr. Candice Matthews, told Insider. "Daryl is sitting on a stool, a stool in a cubby," Darresha George told Insider. Bloom told Insider that the district's policy on hair length does not violate the Crown Act. His hair is a connection to God," Matthews said, adding that Darryl's dad's hair, stepdad's hair, and brother's hair is woven into his own.

FAI did not make formal contract offer to Pauw, says chief exec

Following its review, the FAI said it would not renew her contract, which expired at the end of last month. Pauw said on Aug. 31 that she had begun talks with the FAI over a new contract in March and that it had "committed to issuing an offer" before reconsidering their position. "At no point was a contract offer ever presented to Vera," chief executive Hill told reporters on Thursday. "Conversations did not progress to a point where a formal offer was made to Vera ... and in advance of the World Cup, we decided to pause discussions." "We believed it was not appropriate to offer a new contract at this point."

Soon after starting his junior year last month at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, Darryl George was separated from his classmates because of the way he wears his hair, his mother and a lawyer said. Each morning, he is asked by officials at the school, about 30 miles east of Houston, whether he has cut his hair yet, she said. “He is actually getting singled out,” said Ms. George. “They are personally stopping him, ‘Did he cut his hair?’ Asking him at the door.”Darryl has locs, or long ropelike strands of hair, that he pins on his head in a barrel roll, a protective style that reflects Black culture, Ms. George said. On Aug. 31, about two weeks after school started, school officials told her that his hair length, even though pinned, violated the dress code.

Energy firms have sharply increased shareholder returns on the back of high energy prices after years of overspending on production growth. Oil and gas companies led all industries in cash distribution to shareholders in 2022, with a combined 8% dividend and buyback yield, Deloitte said. But investors holding $2.3 trillion of equity in the global oil and gas industry are changing their expectations about growth markets faster than energy company executives, Deloitte said. About 75% of surveyed investors stated that they would continue holding shares to accelerate investments in lower-carbon technologies, even if yields shrank to as little as 3%. About 43% of surveyed investors emphasized battery storage as their key area for investment.

From the start, the courtroom drama in the impeachment trial of Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general, has centered on a confrontation between the larger-than-life Houston lawyers brought in by each side to argue the case. In Mr. Paxton’s corner, there is Tony Buzbee, a well-tanned orator and onetime candidate for mayor of Houston, who successfully defended Rick Perry, a former governor of Texas, against charges of abuse of office. Not to be outdone, the House impeachment managers brought in their own big guns: Dick DeGuerin, whose list of clients included the Waco cult leader David Koresh, and Rusty Hardin, a defender of criminally accused athletes like Roger Clemens and Scottie Pippen. The voices of these high-profile lawyers have echoed for days in the towering chamber of the Texas State Senate, underscoring the unusual nature of the case. The impeachment trial, now expected to wrap up by week’s end, is the first of a statewide official in Texas in more than a century, and it has become a showcase for the deepening rifts within the Republican Party, both in the state and nationally.

HOUSTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - U.S. oil major Chevron Corp (CVX.N) on Tuesday said it has acquired a majority stake in the world's largest proposed storage facility for hydrogen from renewable energy. U.S. majors Chevron and Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) are rushing to lower production costs and bring scale to the technology as part of their lower carbon fuel strategy. Chevron wants to develop "a large-scale, hydrogen platform that provides affordable, reliable, ever-cleaner energy,” said Austin Knight, vice president of hydrogen, Chevron New Energies. Hydrogen can also be used to store energy and used to adjust seasonal supply and demand needs in power grids. It is spending an average of $1.25 billion per year through 2028 to reduce its own emissions and expand lower carbon fuels including hydrogen.

Sept 1 (Reuters) - Former Ireland coach Vera Pauw said executives from the country's football association (FAI) undermined her position and interfered in football matters during the Women's World Cup. Dutch coach Pauw led Ireland to their first major tournament this year in Australia and New Zealand, where they exited in the group stage. Eileen Gleeson, FAI's head of women and girls' football, was appointed interim head coach. "Following the article ... which included allegations I absolutely refute, I believe the FAI made some major mistakes by directly overruling the tasks of the coach," Pauw said on Thursday in a statement cited by the Irish Times. "I believe that the review process which the association has carried out was flawed and that the outcome was pre-determined," Pauw added.

A Texas judge declared a law that prevented cities from passing some local ordinances unconstitutional. Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed a bill into law in June that prohibited cities from passing certain local ordinances. "I am thrilled that Houston, our legal department, and sister cities were able to obtain this victory for Texas cities," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner wrote in a statement. "While the judge declared HB 2127 unconstitutional, she did not enjoin enforcement of the law by Texans who are harmed by local ordinances, which HB 2127 preempts," Willey wrote to Insider. "This is a HUGE win for the working people of Texas, local govs, and communities across our state," the Texas AFL-CIO posted in response to the decision.

Opinion | State’s ‘Misguided Takeover’ of Houston Schools
  + stars: | 2023-08-17 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Anger Rises in Houston Over the State’s Schools Takeover” (news article, Aug. 13):The politically motivated and downright misguided takeover of the Houston Independent School District sets a deplorable example for struggling school districts nationwide. The solution to poorly performing schools should not be to close libraries and force misbehaving students to watch videos in those repurposed spaces. To place them in closed libraries and force them to watch videos of their classes only confirms for those students that they’re troublemakers and that reading lacks value. Superintendent Mike Miles, a former Army ranger “who has no official certification,” is better suited to run an Army base, not schools. His plan to compensate teachers for improved scores on standardized tests is also imprudent, for such tests provide a limited measure of students’ aptitude, are often biased and narrow the scope of classroom instruction.

A statement from a specialist unit of Italy's carabinieri police on Friday said the return of the artefacts was due to the cooperation between Italian and U.S. judicial authorities. Pictures provided by the Italian culture ministry show the artefacts include several painted pots, the head of a statue and some coins, which were displayed at a restitution ceremony earlier this week in New York. The statement said 145 pieces were recovered as part of bankruptcy proceedings against British antiquities dealer Robin Symes.

The Suezmax requires a lightering agent to transfer the crude to smaller ships, as its size and weight restrict it from directly entering the port. Shipping companies are worried that lightering the Iranian crude onto their vessels would lead other oil buyers to shun their ships on future voyages, one of those people said. "Our legal team said 'absolutely not,'" he added, saying the ship has yet to find any willing party to transfer the oil. A Western industry expert said the inability to discharge the cargo is partly out of fear of repercussions from Iran. WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself, one place at a time. A cricket complex outside Houston hosts youth and professional players alike, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity in a changing city. July 15, 2023Drive northwest out of Houston, and as cow pastures wrestle back the flat expanse from the city’s tentacled sprawl, there arise along the road, suddenly, improbably, many, many cricket fields. Head south to find a small cricket stadium nestled in the suburbs, or west to find fields sprouting in county parks. The game of cricket — a bat-ball-and-wicket contest of patience and athleticism that was born in Britain and is barely understood by most Americans — has surprisingly taken hold in the land of Friday night football.
