NEW YORK (AP) — Daniil Medvedev predicted he would need to play “11 out of 10” to get past defending champion and top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open. 3-seeded Medvedev won his lone major championship at Flushing Meadows in 2021 by defeating 23-time Slam winner Djokovic in that year's title match. Even before the start of these two weeks, folks had been anticipating a Djokovic vs. Alcaraz showdown on the last day of the event. Theirs is an inter-generational rivalry — Djokovic is 36; Alcaraz 20 — that has fascinated the tennis world in recent months. He lost to Rafael Nadal in New York in 2019, and to Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022.

He will usually return to his bench, hydrate and towel off his face and body before slipping into a fresh shirt. Sometimes he’ll grab a fresh shirt out of his bag at the end of a set. It is not uncommon for a player who has been sweating in a competition to change into a clean shirt a few times each match. “You want to be as light as you can on the court,” Tiafoe said after his second-round victory, adding that if he feels even a small amount of moisture on his shirt, he’ll change it. For Tiafoe, it is a near obsession with changing shirts — perhaps more than any other player on the men’s tour.

In his nearly three decades at Sports Illustrated before becoming executive editor, the journalist L. Jon Wertheim bounced all over the world of sports, covering mixed martial arts, the N.B.A., sports psychology and pool hall hustlers. He became a correspondent for “60 Minutes” in 2017, and is now an on-air analyst for the Tennis Channel, where he covers the four Grand Slam tournaments, including the U.S. Open, which runs this year through Sept. 10. Mr. Wertheim, 53, has also written or co-written 10 books, including “Strokes of Genius,” which painstakingly annotates every shot of the 2008 Wimbledon men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. But until recently, his weekends were devoted to family life. The couple’s two children, Ben, 22, and Allegra, 19, are in college.

The size, shape and density of the sand make up the hardcourt surface and dictate the speed of the ball after it bounces. The court surface used at Flushing Meadows is called Laykold, which is made by Advanced Polymer Technology, an international manufacturer of sports surfaces. Even while not at his best Alcaraz could rely on raw talent and a vast repertoire of shots to see off the 177th ranked South African. After the match Alcaraz focused on the positives, rating his effort as "great" but admitting to a letdown in the third set. "In the end, I think I played a pretty good match and will try to keep the same level." Under Arthur Ashe Stadium's bright lights Alcaraz found himself under even greater scrutiny after an unconvincing build-up to the season's final Grand Slam. There will be no room for such lapses in third round for Alcaraz with 26th seed Dan Evans waiting in the wings.

And here is where things can get complicated: In the tennis world, at least, Ms. Riddle’s exposure is still partly tied to her boyfriend’s success. Many fans who take selfies with Ms. Riddle know her from “Break Point,” the Netflix series that follows the highs and lows of several rising tennis stars. Mr. Fritz has since failed to advance past the third round of any Grand Slam tournament. As such, the “Break Point” crew hasn’t spent much time with the couple for the scheduled second season, Ms. Riddle said. After Carlos Alcaraz won his U.S. Open title in 2022, he signed high-profile deals with Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton.

CNN —The stage is set for another epic showdown between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open which starts on Monday. The pair have thrilled tennis fans this season with two special matches, first in the Wimbledon final and then most recently at the Cincinnati Open. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable season in 2023, winning six titles that include Wimbledon – his second grand slam – and two Masters 1000 events. “What Alcaraz has done in the last year is unbelievable,” seven-time grand slam champion John McEnroe told Eurosport. Now with increased experience in grand slam finals, perhaps the 2023 US Open will finally be the tournament Ruud banishes his grand slam final demons.

“And now every player knows if he is going to compete with him, he’s going to have to do that as well.”Alcaraz knows that better than anyone. He wants to win spectacularly, showcasing his power and speed and touch from everywhere on the court. “It’s dynamic,” Alcaraz has said time and again of his style. Each took a turn or two redrawing the tennis court to suit his style. First came Federer’s supreme and unmatched shotmaking, which ran into Nadal’s power and competitive fire, which ran into Djokovic’s relentless defense and angular creativity, which ran into Murray’s magical touch and movement.

With the grass and clay seasons over, the eyes of the tennis world now turn to Flushing Meadows. The U.S. Open, played from Aug. 28 to Sept. 10 in Queens, is the last Grand Slam tournament of the calendar year, giving players one more chance to win a major title. At last year’s U.S. Open, Serena Williams largely stole the show during the first week as she closed out her storied career by reaching the third round of the singles draw. Both of the 2022 singles winners are back in the field: Iga Swiatek, the 22-year-old from Poland and a four-time Grand Slam tournament champion, and Carlos Alcaraz, the 20-year-old Spanish phenom with two Grand Slam singles titles under his belt. In the United States, ESPN will carry the action from the first ball of the day until late into the night.

After I beat Rafa Nadal at last year’s Open, I felt like I was looked at totally different. You don’t realize what you’re doing, how crazy it is, while you’re doing it because you’re doing it. I think afterward, going home and buying little things at CVS and ladies are like, “Oh my god, I can’t believe this is you.” It’s been crazy. The famous guy wants to hang out, and he can do it at that time, but you maybe need to not do that. You know, like, going on “The Shop” with LeBron — stuff that I’ve wanted to do, but scheduling just hasn’t quite worked out.

Novak Djokovic had dominated all of the most significant moments of the first half of this tennis season. After winning his 10th Australian Open, he emerged with the Roland Garros crown, his 23rd Grand Slam tournament title, tied for the career record. A win at Wimbledon, on tennis’s most hallowed ground, would have put him three-quarters of the way to becoming the first man to achieve a calendar Grand Slam in 54 years. Carlos Alcaraz, surprising the tennis world with a championship match victory over Djokovic on the slick Wimbledon grass, a surface assumed to have been the Spaniard’s kryptonite. But when the final was over, as Alcaraz lofted the greatest trophy in tennis skyward, a budding tug of war had morphed into a full-blown rivalry for men’s tennis supremacy.

“The matches are going to get tougher, more demanding as the tournament progresses,” he said between bites. He has become the elder legend of the sport and solidified his status as the greatest player of the modern era. Djokovic prevailed in their first match at the French Open, where Alcaraz succumbed to stress-induced cramping, but lost in five thrilling sets in the Wimbledon final. Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner of Italy and Holger Rune of Denmark, he said, are members of a generation that unapologetically believes it is capable of beating him to win big tournaments. “My role nowadays is to prevent them from that,” he said with the sly grin that has become a late-career trademark.

"It's hard to envision," McEnroe said of whether anyone not named Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev or even Jannik Sinner could triumph. "But it would be incredible for an American player to make a breakthrough to me, but the likelihood is that it isn't going to happen. "You can see it's going to be Djokovic or Alcaraz, Medvedev is the next guy, and then Sinner. But the North American hard court swing following Wimbledon has been disappointing for the 25-year-old son of immigrant parents from war-torn Sierra Leone. Tommy Paul, who beat Alcaraz at the Canadian Open, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks and Sebastian Korda are among the other American players who will look to snap the Grand Slam dry spell at the U.S. Open, which runs from Aug. 28-Sept. 10.

When they met for the second time in the French Open semi-finals in June, it was the inexperienced Spaniard who cracked under pressure and suffered from severe cramps as Djokovic, 36, prevailed. Now they are level again after Wimbledon and Cincinnati, creating huge expectation for a possible U.S. Open showdown. ATP to trial minimum wage initiative from 2024
  + stars: | 2023-08-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Aug 23 (Reuters) - The ATP will guarantee its players a minimum wage for the first time as part of a three-year trial to be launched in 2024, the governing body of men's tennis said. The "Baseline" programme will guarantee minimum income for the top 250-ranked singles players each season, with the ATP covering any shortfall should their earnings fall below the threshold. The ATP said it expected to provide financial support to between 30-45 players who meet the criteria. The ATP said it will also commit to supporting players who compete in fewer than nine ATP Tour and Challenger Tour events in a season due to injury. The thresholds for the injury protection initiative are set at $200,000 (top 100), $100,000 (101-175) and $50,000 (176-250) for 2024, it added.

Alcaraz needs new rivals for a new era

Certainly the prospect of another showdown at the U.S. Open in a few weeks is exciting, but whether or not 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic can stretch his career long enough to battle Alcaraz on a regular basis is questionable. 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said after Alcaraz ended Djokovic's 34-match winning run at the grasscourt slam. Italian Jannik Sinner, 21, beat Alcaraz at last year's Wimbledon but has reached only one Grand Slam semi-final so far, losing to Djokovic in straight sets last week. Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, was outclassed by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semi-final, lasting less than two hours on Centre Court. Between them they won 65 Grand Slam titles and it has to be hoped that Alcaraz finds a couple of adversaries to share the load as tennis moves into a new era.
