Companies Tesla Inc FollowJune 16 (Reuters) - A federal court in Louisiana on Friday dismissed Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) complaint against a state restriction on direct car sales, according to a ruling. Last year, Tesla filed a lawsuit to challenge Louisiana's refusal to allow the company to sell vehicles directly to consumers, calling the U.S. state's move protectionist and anticompetitive. The case is part of Tesla's strategy of reversing direct sales bans in some states against the electric carmaker, which bypassed traditional car dealerships to sell vehicles to consumers online or at its own stores. “(T)he direct sales ban applies equally to all manufacturers, and Tesla has alleged no facts regarding anti-Tesla animus on the part of the Louisiana Legislature," the ruling said. June 16 (Reuters) - Britain's competition regulator on Friday cleared Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.O) planned $1.7 billion acquisition of iRobot Corp (IRBT.O), maker of the Roomba vacuum cleaner. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had concluded that the deal would not lead to competition concerns in the UK. "We're pleased with the UK Competition and Markets Authority's decision and are committed to supporting regulatory bodies in their work," a spokesperson for Amazon said. The news sent shares in U.S-listed iRobot up 12% in pre-market trade, while Amazon's stock was marginally down. EU antitrust regulators will decide by July 6 whether to clear the deal, while the U.S. Federal Trade Commission is also examining the acquisition.

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - In the new season of Netflix Inc's (NFLX.O) sci-fi show "Black Mirror," an office manager finds that a streaming service is replaying her life using an avatar of Salma Hayek. Hayek, in the episode released on Thursday, has sold her digital image to Hollywood for use in programming created with artificial intelligence (AI). The story highlights real-world concerns of actors and writers, said "Schitt's Creek" star Annie Murphy, who plays the office manager. Murphy said she and Hayek discussed the issue during filming of "Black Mirror." "Her image has been used in so many terrible and disrespectful ways, so we did have conversations about that," Murphy said.

June 14 (Reuters) - Two U.S. senators introduced legislation on Wednesday that would allow social media companies to be sued for spreading harmful material created with artificial intelligence. The law would open the door for lawsuits to proceed against social media companies for claims based on emerging generative AI technology, including fabricated but strikingly realistic "deepfake" photos and videos of real people. It followed the defeat last month of two landmark cases at the Supreme Court that would have narrowed the scope of Section 230 immunity. "We can't make the same mistakes with generative AI as we did with Big Tech on Section 230," said Hawley, a Republican. A small set of narrow exceptions have been established for issues like copyright infringement and child sex trafficking, the latter via a bipartisan 2018 amendment called the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act.

She spoke following a keynote presentation in San Francisco during which Su showed an AI system on the MI300X chip writing a poem about the city. "The more memory that you have, the larger the set of models" the chip can handle, Su said. But unlike past presentations where AMD has talked up a major customer for a new chip, AMD did not say who will adopt the MI300X or a smaller version called the MI300A. Nvidia, whose shares have surged 170% so far this year, dominates the AI computing market with a market share of 80% to 95%, according to analysts. Aside from the AI market, AMD said it has started shipping high volumes of a general purpose central processor chip called "Bergamo" to companies such as Meta Platforms (META.O).

"The Democratic Party's united front in support of President Biden's reelection is unprecedented," said Julie Chavez Rodriguez, campaign manager for Biden-Harris 2024. Microsoft senior executives donated more to the Biden campaign during the primaries than any other large tech company. In the runup to 2024, these donors will play a key role in helping Biden raise cash amid an uncertain economy and tepid enthusiasm among Democrats over the 80-year-old president's decision to run again. Biden's campaign alone raised more than $1 billion during the 2020 cycle, with more than $700 million of that coming from online grassroots donations. Two fundraising events Biden held last month in New York raised more than $3 million, according to a person familiar with those totals.

June 12 (Reuters) - European Union antitrust regulators may order Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google to sell a part of its advertising-technology business, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Monday. However, frustration has been mounting after Google failed to address competition concerns, the source said. The Commission and Google did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Google is the most dominant digital advertising platform in the world with a 28% market share of global ad revenue, according to research firm Insider Intelligence. Google's dominance in online advertising has been increasingly questioned over the past few years.

June 8 (Reuters) - Cohere, an AI foundation model company that competes with Microsoft-backed OpenAI, said on Thursday it had raised $270 million in a funding round backed by Nvidia (NVDA.O), Oracle (ORCL.N) and Salesforce Ventures, among others. Generative AI aims to make human-like creations through computer code that has processed vast amounts of data. Cohere did not reveal its valuation after the latest funding round. AI startups are a bright spot in an otherwise subdued market for venture capital funding, particularly for technology companies, amid rising interest rates and increased investor focus on profitability. Last month, Anthropic, another AI startup which has received backing from Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google, also raised $450 million in a new round.

Companies Dell Technologies Inc FollowJune 6 (Reuters) - Dell Technologies Inc's (DELL.N) Australian unit has been found guilty by the country's Federal Court to have misled customers about the prices or discounts on its add-on monitors on its website, Australia's competition regulator said on Tuesday. When customers chose to buy a personal computer, Dell Australia gave them an option to bundle a compatible monitor at a discounted, or a 'strikethrough' price, suggesting it would be cheaper to buy the monitor in a bundle rather than separately. HONG KONG, June 6 (Reuters) - BlackRock Inc's (BLK.N) head of China business, Tony Tang, is leaving the asset manager, the company said on Tuesday, after having played a key role in expanding operations in the world's second-largest economy. Susan Chan, BlackRock's deputy head of Asia Pacific and head of Greater China, is now directly overseeing its China onshore business, the company said. "China represents a significant opportunity for BlackRock to contribute to the financial futures of a new generation of investors," the company said. Tang, a former Chinese securities regulatory official, started as BlackRock's China business head in 2019, and has been one of the top aides to CEO Larry Fink. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationWASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's re-election campaign said on Tuesday that a decision by Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) YouTube to stop policing false claims about fraud in the 2020 race is "reckless" and could lead to violence. YouTube said on Friday the platform would stop removing content that might have spread false claims related to U.S. presidential elections in 2020 and before. Biden's opponent, former President Donald Trump, has falsely claimed that the election was marred by widespread fraud. Snap hires new head of engineering from Google

June 5 (Reuters) - Snap Inc (SNAP.N) said on Monday it hired a new senior vice president of engineering from Google, the latest in a string of new recruits to advance its advertising business. Eric Young, who was previously vice president of engineering for Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud, will oversee the core infrastructure for Snap, which owns the popular photo messaging app Snapchat. While Snap has consistently expanded its audience for Snapchat, which now has 750 million monthly users, the company has struggled to generate revenue at the same pace. While at Google, Young worked on building the tech infrastructure for products like search, ads and YouTube. His appointment at Snap comes after the company hired Rob Wilk, former head of advertising at Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), to become president of the Americas region, as well as another Google executive to lead revenue product.
