Why a 'no landing' scenario may take place after all
  + stars: | 2024-10-15 | by ( Sean Conlon | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
A soft landing occurs when economic growth slows just enough to bring down inflation below the Federal Reserve's 2% target without tipping the economy into a recession. She thinks the economy is experiencing a no-landing scenario as it continues to expand without slowing down. "So far, clearly bank earnings are coming in better than expected, both top line and bottom line. "The other thing that that's showing [is] that our call for the 'no landing' is actually playing out." It's not just bank earnings that point to solid economic growth.

Goldman Sachs analysts upgraded their growth forecast for China from 4.7% to 4.9% for this year. AdvertisementChina may not fall too short of its growth targets this year after all, Goldman Sachs analysts said. The analysts also upgraded their growth forecast for next year, from 4.3% to 4.7%. Advertisement"The '3D' challenges - deteriorating demographics, a multi-year debt deleveraging trend, and the global supply chain de-risking push are unlikely to be reversed by the latest round of policy easing," they added. China's recent stimulus pushes have aimed to prop up its weak economy, which has been plagued by a struggling property sector and weak domestic demand.

Fresh signs of deflation in China are stoking demand for national stimulus to revive the economy. China's headwinds include a burst property bubble, high youth unemployment, and threats to exports. AdvertisementChinese officials are under mounting pressure to stimulate the economy after official price data released Sunday stoked fresh deflation fears. That was below the consensus estimate of 0.6%, which would have matched the rate of price growth in August. Positioning in financial stocks is light relative to other sectors, Morgan Stanley says. AdvertisementInvestors are lingering in defensive trades that don't take advantage of the economy's strength, Morgan Stanley said, highlighting opportunities in underinvested sectors. The firm — which just last week upgraded cyclical stocks to "overweight" relative to defensives — described the financials group as particularly attractive. Morgan Stanley said net exposure to financials was in the bottom 15th percentile of a historical data series that goes back to 2010. Morgan Stanley noted that this weakness lowered earnings-season expectations for investors, making it easier for major lenders to outperform forecasts.

Wells Fargo on Friday reported third-quarter earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations, causing its shares to rise. The better-than-expected earnings came even with a sizeable decline in net interest income, a key measure of what a bank makes on lending. "Our revenue sources are more diverse and fee-based revenue grew 16% during the first nine months of the year, largely offsetting net interest income headwinds." Wells saw net income fall to $5.11 billion, or $1.42 per share, in the third quarter, from $5.77 billion, or $1.48 per share, during the same quarter a year ago. The net income includes $447 million, or 10 cents a share, in losses on debt securities, the company said.

Beijing Reuters —China will “significantly increase” government debt issuance to offer subsidies to people with low incomes, support the property market and replenish state banks’ capital as it pushes to revive sputtering economic growth. “There is still relatively big room for China to issue debt,” he said. Reuters reported last month that China plans to issue special sovereign bonds worth about 2 trillion yuan ($284.43 billion) this year as part of fresh fiscal stimulus. Separately, Bloomberg News reported that China is also considering injecting up to 1 trillion yuan ($142 billion) of capital into its biggest state banks to increase their capacity to support the economy, primarily by issuing new sovereign bonds. Swedish furniture retailer Ikea, whose 39 stores in China have felt the spillovers from the property crisis, urged Beijing on Thursday to deploy further stimulus.

CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group are demanding Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan and two other commissioners recuse themselves from a lawsuit accusing the companies and other drug middlemen of boosting their profits while inflating insulin costs for Americans. In separate motions filed Tuesday night with the FTC, CVS and UnitedHealth argued that all three commissioners have an extensive track record of making public statements that indicate "serious bias" against the companies' so-called pharmacy benefit managers. CVS said those statements demonstrate that the commissioners have "prejudged this matter," so their participation in the case "violates due process." The FTC filed the suit last month against the three largest PBMs, CVS Health's Caremark, UnitedHealth Group 's Optum Rx and Cigna 's Express Scripts. The FTC has been investigating PBMs and their role in insulin prices since 2022.

Swedish automaker Volvo Cars on Wednesday announced deputy CEO Björn Annwall will step down from his current role as part of a management reshuffle designed to increase simplicity and collaboration in the organization. It comes shortly after Volvo Cars abandoned its near-term goal of selling only electric vehicles (EVs), citing a need to be "pragmatic and flexible." "In a rapidly changing world, we need to ensure our organisation is equipped to navigate a more challenging market," Jim Rowan, CEO at Volvo Cars, said in a written statement. "We are now regrouping our commercial leadership team with a focus on making Volvo Cars even stronger with increased speed and efficiency," he added. Why health care could be a winner heading into year-end

Health care may be the answer, if history is any indication. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) has posted a November gain in eight of the last 10 years. Health care trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22.2, while the S & P 500 has a multiple of 24. The optimism around health care comes as the sector lags the broader market. Some health care names poised to do well, according to Krinsky, are Masimo and Viking Therapeutics .
