REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoJune 16 (Reuters) - Electric-vehicle startups from Nikola (NKLA.O) to Lordstown Motors (RIDE.O) were set on Friday to extend a blistering rally in their shares that has put the cash-strapped companies on track for hefty weekly gains. For instance Nikola, which has more than doubled in value this week, has a short interest of 15.7%, according to Refinitiv. The EV startups, meanwhile, have added over $500 million to their collective market value. Nikola shares were 20% higher before the bell on Friday at $1.65, on course to stay above the minimum level for the third straight session. The company said it plans to invest 1.6 billion euros to increase gross store space in 2023 by about 3%. Inditex closed its over 500 stores in Russia in March 2022 following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February and subsequent Western sanctions. Inditex has begun to charge for online returns in more countries with no impact on sales, the company said. Inditex is also invested in more self-scanning checkouts and is replacing hard anti-theft tags with chips sewn into garments to avoid checkout queues.

The advance in those indexes, particularly the S & P 500, has been very uneven, even with last week's broad rally. Lowry Research analysts noted that investors simply in the S & P 500, or in tech stocks, were clearly in an up market. Lowry noted that 48.2% of all operating-company only stocks are 20% or more below their 52-week highs, which Lowry and others define as bear market territory. That's far worse than the 32% that were in bear market territory on February 2, when the S & P 500 was at a new high for the year. "Bull markets are hard-pressed to last when the number of stocks entering 'bear market territory' grows," Lowry noted.

The unemployment rate rose to 3.7% in May against the estimate for 3.5%, even though the labor force participation rate was unchanged. "The U.S. labor market continues to demonstrate grit amid chaos – from inflation to high-profile layoffs and rising gas prices," said Becky Frankiewicz, president and chief commercial officer of Manpower Group. Patrick T. Fallon | Bloomberg | Getty Imageswatch nowTo start the year, the main theme in tech was layoffs and cost cuts. But investors have shifted their focus to AI now that companies are showcasing real-world applications of the long-hyped technology. Google, meanwhile, is touting its rival AI model at every opportunity, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg would much rather tell shareholders about his company's AI advancements than the company's money-bleeding metaverse efforts. The chipmaker, known best for its graphics processing units (GPUs) that power advanced video games, is riding the AI wave. The next three top gainers in the index are also tech companies: Meta, Advanced Micro Devices and Salesforce .
Artificial intelligence plays led the stock market higher this week, as excitement over Nvidia's blowout earnings beat lifted other tech names. Japan's Nikkei powers to 1990 'bubble' era high

TOKYO, May 19 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei share average rallied on Friday to the highest since August 1990, the country's so-called "bubble" era, driven by a confluence of positive factors from strong earnings to optimism over a U.S. debt ceiling deal. The broader Topix (.TOPX), which had reached the post-bubble milestone on Tuesday, extended its climb to as high as 2,171.37. Foreign buying thanks to increased investment by Warren Buffett and a push for better corporate governance by the Tokyo Stock Exchange also provided some impetus. The Nikkei had rocketed 6.2% from the May 10 close - when sweeping rally began - to reach Friday's high. "Investors are going to spend today thinking hard about whether this Nikkei rally will continue," said Kazuo Kamitami, an equity strategist at Nomura Securities.
The markets are headed toward a positive week and certain stocks stood out from the rest. The S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 1.5% and 2.9% week to date, respectively. Regional bank stocks were among this week's most notable gainers after a difficult few weeks. Regional bank stocks Comerica and Zions Bancorporation saw the largest gains this week, with shares surging 22.7% and 21.8%, respectively. Semiconductor design company Synopsys ' stock jumped 12.5% week to date and hit a new 52-week high Friday.
Consumers barely kept up with inflation in April, as retail sales increased but fell short of expectations, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. The advanced sales report showed an increase of 0.4%, below the Dow Jones estimate for 0.8%. Excluding auto-related figures, sales increased 0.4%, which was in line with expectations. As the numbers are not adjusted for inflation, the headline increase equaled the 0.4% monthly rise in the consumer price index. Miscellaneous store retailers led gainers with a 2.4% increase, while online sales rose 1.2% and health and personal care retailers saw a 0.9% rise.
The new pricing system scraps a so-called fuel import parity policy that more closely aligned prices at the pump with the oil market and exchange rates. In a research note, JPMorgan (JPM.N) described the reworked pricing policy as "more friendly than investors expected." The policy shift will be tested when oil prices rise, and apply upward pressure on what consumers can expect to pay for motor fuels or LPG. Petrobras' new pricing policy also came under criticism from some as too opaque. The previous pricing policy was adopted seven years ago by conservative former President Michel Temer.
Companies Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras FollowRIO DE JANEIRO, May 16 (Reuters) - Brazil's state-run oil giant, Petrobras (PETR4.SA), has approved a new commercial strategy to set diesel and gasoline prices, it said on Tuesday, ditching its previous import parity policy without revealing a specific fresh pricing formula. "The end of pricing parity is not good, but this was already expected." "The new policy scraps the 'import parity' terminology, but in our view it has not changed materially," Credit Suisse analyst Regis Cardoso said. The import parity policy was adopted in 2016 by former President Michel Temer. People close to Lula celebrated the announcement, with his Mines and Energy minister, Alexandre Silveira, telling reporters the policy would not impose as much volatility as the import parity used to.
