Dianne Feinstein's seat on the Judiciary committee is now empty in the wake of her death. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn the wake of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's death, questions are swirling over how the California Democrat's now-empty seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee will be filled. In order to change the membership of any Senate committee, the chamber has to pass a resolution to make that change official. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer can do so via a simple voice vote if no Republicans object to the change. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio said it was up to Republicans on the Judiciary Committee and that he would "probably support" whatever decision they made.

WASHINGTON — With fewer than two days left to fund the federal government and avoid a shutdown, House GOP leaders on Friday began debate ahead of a vote on a partisan, short-term spending bill that has no chance of passing in the Senate. Speaker Kevin McCarthy pitched the bill as a way for his fellow Republicans to buy time to pass a slate of individual agency spending bills. The Senate easily advanced its own short-term funding bill Thursday by a 76-22 margin. The Senate bill is likely to be amended ahead of Saturday's vote, and the next version could contain stronger border security measures that House Republicans are demanding. Missing the Senate vote will be Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who died late Thursday at her home in Washington, D.C.

Age limits remain popular, and lawmakers have begun to wake up to the realities of gerontocracy. "I believe everyone deserves the kind of dignity to make their own choices," said Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. He also opposes age limits, arguing that people should be able to "choose who they want, no matter how old they are." "Different people age differently, you know, somebody at a younger age may have more impacts due to aging than somebody at an older age. "I don't think it's a problem to be old, I think it's a problem to have a lack of diversity."

A judge in San Francisco on Monday ordered the two factions of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s family fighting over the estate of her late husband, the wealthy financier Richard C. Blum, to try to settle the case through mediation. The order, which both sides agreed to, came as the lawyers in the case appeared in a courtroom for the first time after trading hostile accusations in legal filings over the summer. On one side is Senator Feinstein, who at 90 is in declining health and has faced questions about her ability to carry out the duties of her job, and her daughter, Katherine Feinstein, a former San Francisco judge. On the other side are the three daughters of Mr. Blum from a previous marriage, and his former business partners who are the trustees of his estate. In three separate lawsuits, Senator Feinstein, with her daughter serving as her legal representative, is fighting to sell a multimillion-dollar vacation home in Stinson Beach, north of San Francisco; seeking proceeds from the estate, including from Mr. Blum’s life insurance policy, to pay for her medical expenses; and asking the court to allow her to appoint Katherine Feinstein as a trustee of the estate.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended Senator Dianne Feinstein for remaining in office after a series of health issues, dismissing concerns about Ms. Feinstein’s continued ability to serve as a sexist double standard. Speaking to Politico for an article published Thursday, Ms. Pelosi stressed that the California senator, a longtime colleague and neighbor, was “doing OK” and minimized Ms. Feinstein’s recent fall, for which she was briefly hospitalized, as a “very little fall, it was like nothing.”She suggested that the criticisms of Ms. Feinstein, 90, and questions related to her eventual retirement were gendered. “It’s OK, you know, they can vote, and it’s all they need to do,” Ms. Pelosi, 83, said of the rationalizations offered for male elected officials who have faced age-related health concerns. “And then Dianne comes along and then they’re making such a fuss? Dianne Feinstein makes news these days for the health challenges that seem to keep mounting, but behind her story is another, which few pay attention to. When I watched the news clip of Senator Feinstein starting to give prepared comments on an $823 billion military budget, when all she needed to do was say “aye,” I felt the ache of familiarity. Senator Feinstein, we’ve been told, had recently recovered from encephalitis, which she got from shingles, and which can result in cognitive issues. They know the looks, the behavior; they live with all of it day after day, month after month. Let me tell you something about the fear of cognitive decline: It unleashes a torrent of emotions in caregivers.
