Opinion | Nate Silver on How Kamala Harris Changed the Odds
  + stars: | 2024-08-13 | by ( Ezra Klein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +81 min
You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

But now that Harris is Trump's official 2024 opponent, more and more Republicans are urging the former president to back off the name-calling — including his former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway. Conway, a regular Fox News contributor, told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow on Monday that Trump needs to stop getting caught up with insults against Harris. Advertisement"The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see," Conway told Kudlow on Fox Business. "But I believe importantly that President Trump is right that she's a chameleon. Read previewFor months, Ukraine had been on the back foot in its war against Russia, with the Kremlin's forces slowly winning control of new territory. But last week, Ukraine turned the dynamic of the war on its head, launching an audacious incursion into Russia's Kursk province. However, the training provided by Ukraine's Western allies gave Ukraine the capacity to surprise and outmaneuver Russia. It's unclear exactly how Ukraine managed to take Russia by surprise with its Kursk attack. Military experts said that Ukraine had also exploited the sluggishness and rigidity of Russian military commanders, who scrambled to devise an effective response to the attack.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on August 08, 2024, in Palm Beach, Florida. "The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see: It's fewer insults, more insights and that policy contrast," Kellyanne Conway, a former Trump White House advisor, said Monday in a Fox News interview. "When Trump attacks Harris personally rather than on policy, Harris' support among swing voters rises, particularly among women. It's just a fact of life, right now," Peter Navarro, a former Trump White House aide, said on the conservative WarRoom podcast Monday. "You've got to make this race not on personalities," former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said earlier Monday in an interview on Fox News.

WASHINGTON — Longtime Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., was readmitted to the hospital Sunday night, just days after he was released from a weeks-long hospital stay to a rehabilitation facility, a source close to the congressman confirmed Monday. Pascrell is now receiving care at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., the source said. Pascrell checked himself into a hospital on July 14 with a fever, which his staff said may have been caused by a respiratory illness. At 87 years old, Pascrell is the second-oldest House member, only behind retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif. A former member of the New Jersey General Assembly and a former Patterson mayor, Pascrell was first elected to Congress in 1996.

“I think we can all relate to this,” White House domestic policy advisor Neera Tanden told reporters Friday. Dubbed the “Time is Money” initiative, the actions will make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions, get refunds, submit health care and insurance forms online, and access high-quality customer service. Another existing effort cited by the White House is a June 2023 FTC proposal to target companies that use deceptive customer feedback practices, like fake reviews. None of the actions that make up the “Time is Money” initiative will require congressional approval, a senior administration official said. The White House has pursued aggressive antitrust regulations and taken a highly skeptical approach to crypto currencies, both of which have rankled Wall Street.

After years of condemning former President Donald Trump for spreading disinformation and conspiracy theories, Democrats are now poking fun at his running mate using a false, vulgar rumor. Walz told an arena filled with thousands of excited supporters: “I got to tell you, I can’t wait to debate [Vance]. JB Pritzker, who at the time was considered to be on the short list to be Harris' running mate, leaned into the joke twice in the following days. In conversations with nearly a dozen Democratic lawmakers and candidates running in competitive races across the country, a common theme emerged. Tim Walz, Democrats have felt a tangible bump of energy in their districts, through spikes in volunteers, donations and event turnout. Rep. Chris Deluzio, who supports Harris, told CNN he was glad to see that she has moved away from her previous position on fracking. Students and their families, along with college financial aid administrators, hoped the 2025-26 school year would be a return to normalcy. Financial aid administrators continue to deal with problems even as the school year quickly approaches. But ultimately, financial aid advocates conceded that they'd rather have a delayed-yet-functional application than an on-time and glitchy one. There's not much applicants can do at this point to ease stress about the financial aid timeline. Still, Vasconcelos shares three tips for incoming or current college students as the upcoming financial aid cycle approaches.

Musk could "sacrifice some of the short-term interest in Tesla," Ward added, "if it'll satisfy the long-term interests of his ambitions." Musk and Tesla didn't respond to requests from Reuters for comment. The growing bond between Trump and Musk could be on display Monday night, when the Tesla boss is scheduled to interview the Republican candidate on X, Musk's social media platform. It's unclear exactly what ambitions Musk could seek to advance through his increasingly vocal rejection of progressive platforms – from EV subsidies to identity politics. A Reuters review of Congressional lobbying records – and Tesla's public comments to federal and state regulators – shows that the company has continued working to shape public policy in favor of such benefits.

New York CNN —The New York Times is getting out of New York endorsements. The newspaper’s editorial board on Monday announced that it will no longer endorse political candidates in New York state and local races. “While elections everywhere remain critical to the lives and experiences of our audience, the editorial board is ceasing the endorsement process for New York elections,” Kathleen Kingsbury, The Times’ Opinion head who oversees the editorial board, said in a statement. Notably, however, the board can continue making endorsements in presidential races, including in the upcoming November election, and it can still endorse political candidates in races outside of the state. The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, known for its conservative bend, has not endorsed candidates since 1928.

The Russian military has made slow but incremental progress in its campaign in the Donetsk region of east Ukraine recently, tempering criticism. CNN —The United States will resume sales of offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia, the State Department said Monday, ending a suspension put in place at the beginning of the Biden administration over concerns about human rights violations in the war in Yemen. “As part of this policy, our administration froze the sale of certain classes of offensive weapons, while also maintaining sales of systems to the kingdom required to defend itself from attack,” State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said at a news briefing. At the outset of President Joe Biden’s tenure, the administration suspended offensive weapons sales to Riyadh amid concerns about the toll of the Saud-led war against the Houthis in Yemen, which killed thousands of civilians. Patel denied that the lifting of the suspension was linked to the administration’s ambitious plan for post-war Gaza and Israel-Saudi normalization. He acknowledged, however, that “Saudi Arabia has remained a close strategic partner of the United States, and we look forward to enhancing that partnership.”

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday pledged to eliminate taxes on tipped wages for service workers, matching a proposal from former President Donald Trump. “When I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage, and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said. Harris would push the proposal with an increase in the minimum wage as well, the official said. “Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” he wrote. “She can only steal from me.”Trump announced a policy proposal to eliminate taxes on tips during a June rally in Las Vegas.

In the summer of 1989, Tim Walz faced a difficult choice. A newly minted college graduate from small-town Nebraska, he had just turned down a stable, 9-to-5 job offer and moved across the world to teach at a local high school in China. He had made it as far as Hong Kong, just across the Chinese border, when People’s Liberation Army tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square to crush pro-democracy protests. As high school teachers in Nebraska and Minnesota, Mr. Walz and his wife, Gwen, regularly led trips to China in the 1990s and early 2000s to introduce students to China’s history and culture. Vice President Kamala Harris pledged to eliminate taxes on tips in the service and hospitality sectors if she wins the presidency, echoing the same proposal former President Donald Trump announced months earlier. The proposal came a day after the Culinary Workers Union, a major labor group in Nevada, endorsed Harris. Trump quickly took to social media to claim credit for the proposal, which he put forward in June at his own Las Vegas rally. "[Harris] has no imagination, whatsoever, as shown by the fact that she played 'COPYCAT' with, NO TAXES ON TIPS!" Banning taxes on tips would require new legislation and congressional approval, which a Harris campaign official later acknowledged.

Why fewer women are running for Congress this year
  + stars: | 2024-08-11 | by ( Simone Pathe | Hien An Ngo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
The number of Republican women running for the House this cycle dropped about 36% from 2022, while the number running for Senate dropped by about 45%, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. “With fewer competitive seats up for grabs, fewer candidates in both parties are running overall, but there is still very strong interest and enthusiasm from Republican women recruits,” Danielle Barrow, executive director of Winning for Women, which works to elect GOP women, said in a statement. That began to change after the 2018 midterms – the huge success enjoyed by Democratic women that year inspired more Republican women to run in 2020. Another possible reason why there may be fewer women running is what Dittmar calls toxicity. Quality over quantityThe decline in the number of candidates running, however, doesn’t necessarily mean there will be fewer women coming to Congress next year.

One of the Biden White House’s greatest achievements, from the perspective of its staffers, if not necessarily the country, has been to deny the press the kind of juicy leaks that were constant under Donald Trump and frequent under his predecessors. For instance, we learned that Biden hadn’t held a full cabinet meeting since last October and that his handlers expected scripted questions from his cabinet officials. We learned that his capacities peak between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and diminish outside that six-hour window. We learned that congressional Democrats, liberal donors and some journalists all had exposure to Biden’s decline that they didn’t discuss publicly until the debacle of the June debate. We learned that none other than Hunter Biden was acting as a close adviser to his father in the crucial days after that debate.
