A gunman opened fire at a draft office in Russia’s Siberian region of Irkutsk on Monday amid a growing backlash against President Vladimir Putin’s chaotic efforts to mobilize more people to boost his troops in Ukraine. A video circulating online, confirmed by NBC News to have been shot in the draft office, showed people inside running for cover and screaming as the gunman fired. But Melvin said it's further evidence of Russia's disorganized mobilization drive. The unrest throughout Russia comes against the backdrop of a voting process underway in four Moscow-occupied regions of Ukraine. The boss of a Russian crime gang was serving a 23-year jail term when he requested to fight in Ukraine. He went to the frontline by the shadowy Wagner Group, who had been recruiting prisoners to fight. A representative from the paramilitary Wagner Group came to get him, and she said he was sent to the front line on July 25. The fight is not only about Ukraine alone: For Putin and the hardliners alike, it’s about the West.

In the early months of the war, Chechen soldiers conscripted to help Russian soldiers clashed with Ukrainian Azov fighters in Mariupol as Russians briefly occupied the city. Kadyrov said Thursday he was "extremely unhappy," with the swap, calling the Azov fighters "terrorists." Along with 55 Russian fighters, Viktor Medvedchuk, an MP and one of Putin's staunchest Ukrainian allies, was sent to Russia, Reuters reported. Wagner is a Russian private military company with close ties to the Kremlin that is now in Ukraine. In a video shared on Telegram, the group's founder can be seen recruiting at a Russian prison. Wagner's Yevgeny Prigozhin claims the men will receive pardons if they agree to fight in Ukraine. Prigozhin's offer to Russian prisoners — to fight in a conflict he bills as being far more difficult than the war Russia fought in Chechnya and Afghanistan — comes with other conditions beyond the threat of execution for deserters. In the video, Prigozhin says he's prepared to accept men between the ages of 22 and 50 but can accept younger recruits with the consent of their families.
