The top contenders to be Kamala Harris’ running mate got to this point, in part, by battling Donald Trump. Now, one of them is likely to become the vice presidential nominee on the Democratic ticket aiming to thwart his comeback bid. Pete Buttigieg rose from obscurity to play a central role in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Andy Beshear, who is also in the mix for Harris’ running mate position. Three prominent lawyers, among them the consumer safety activist and four-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader, sent a letter on Tuesday to a leader of the Wall Street law firm Sullivan & Cromwell to condemn the firm’s policy of scrutinizing job applicants’ participation in protests over Israel’s war in Gaza. The letter, addressed to Joseph C. Shenker, one of the firm’s two senior chairs, was the most prominent criticism of Sullivan & Cromwell’s policy yet from within the legal field. It was also signed by Bruce Fein, a Justice Department official under President Ronald Reagan, and Lou Fisher, a constitutional scholar who worked for 40 years at the Library of Congress. Sullivan & Cromwell said in May that it would use a background-check company to review job applicants’ involvement with pro-Palestinian student groups and in antiwar protests for statements and slogans it deemed to be “triggering” to Jews, including the ubiquitous protest slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”Under the policy, applicants risk being disqualified for a job at the firm even if they weren’t using problematic language themselves but were involved with a protest where others did.

The Olympics Have Arrived

It has been only three years since the last summer Olympics: the 2020 Tokyo Games, you’ll recall, were held in the summer of 2021. Now the Olympics return with untold opportunities to geek out on sports you haven’t thought about for several years, or ever. Broadcast coverage of the Olympics makes this transformation easy. I’m a total sucker for a hyperemotional documentary featurette on that gymnast whose family sacrificed everything for her Olympic dreams. “One of the strangest things I’ve ever seen an animal do,” Alex had told me, and I concurred.

He noted how the new policy links Beijing's ultra-long bond program — announced in March — with consumption. The National Development and Reform Commission on Thursday then announced the expanded policy to support consumption. Picture Books That See Shadows in a New Light

Which is why it’s so refreshing to find two picture books that present shadows for what they are: the non-nefarious interplay of light and dark. Ultimately, her shadow is joined in a meadow by those of two other children and a dog (the four of them now “friendly” shadows). It is in the presence of harsh light — rather than the depths of darkness — that the story turns somber. It was a thinking shadow, a shadow you could feel but not see. Feng’s soft-lined illustrations visually articulate the essence of Handy’s “stretching shadows,” easing day into night.

Bob Newhart Holds Up.
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Jason Zinoman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Bob Newhart, who died on Thursday at the age of 94, has been such a beloved giant of popular culture for so long that it’s easy to forget how unlikely it was that he became one of the founding fathers of stand-up comedy. Before basically inventing the hit stand-up special, with the 1960 Grammy-winning album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” — that doesn’t even count his pay-per-view event broadcast on Canadian television that some cite as the first filmed special — he was a soft-spoken accountant who had never done a set in a nightclub. That he made a classic with so little preparation is one of the great miracles in the history of comedy. A Roman Catholic from the west side of Chicago, Newhart came off as an entirely respectable example of Midwestern nice. Newhart brought his own kind of neurosis, a comedy rooted in nuanced deadpan and silence.

Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Investigators parsing through his online search history haven’t found any indication of him researching how to make home-made explosives, law enforcement officials said. The leader of a New York City suburb is recruiting 75 armed citizens, many of them former police officers, for a force of “special deputies” to be activated whenever he chooses. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican who has allied himself with former President Donald J. Trump and thrust himself into the culture wars, posted a call in March for residents with gun permits and an interest in becoming “provisional emergency special deputy sheriffs.”The posting called the initiative a strategy to assist in the “protection of human life and property during an emergency” such as a hurricane or blackout — and perhaps, Mr. Blakeman later added, “a riot.”The new force has drawn vocal opposition in this well-to-do Long Island county, which is one of the country’s safest, protected by one of the largest police departments. It has plunged Nassau into a national debate about authoritarianism in an election season that some see as a fork in the road for American democracy.
