Now there’s roughly a 50/50 chance that the Fed could either cut rates or hold them steady in March, according to futures. A few developments this past week tempered investors’ optimism, and now the possibility of a rate cut in March could be completely thrown out the window, according to economists. He echoed other Fed officials who’ve recently said that beginning to cut rates in March is just not realistic. In addition to officials’ comments, recent economic data also doesn’t bode well for a March rate cut. Markets are expecting twice as many rate cuts this year than what Fed officials themselves estimated in their latest economic projections released in December.

The Davos consensus on the presidential electionPublicly, the global business leaders who gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, haven’t wanted to predict the winner of the upcoming U.S. presidential election. In an interview with Andrew on CNBC, he didn’t predict that Trump would win, but suggested that dismissing the former president and his supporters would be a mistake. “He wasn’t wrong about some of these critical issues, and that’s why they’re voting for him,” he said. “Trump is already the president at Davos — which is a good thing because the Davos consensus is usually wrong,” Alex Soros, the son of George Soros, said on a panel. Why America's Electric Car Push Isn't Working

Electric vehicles were supposed to be inevitable. Auto execs who were once trumpeting the potential of electric cars are even publicly acknowledging that EVs aren't working . In September, 87% of new-vehicle sales were fully electric vehicles. Plus, heavier electric vehicles are harder on roads, produce more air pollution, and pose a greater safety risk for pedestrians. Time for a rethinkThe shift from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles is an opportunity to rethink how Americans get from place to place.

Many biotech stocks struggled in 2023 despite a robust year for U.S. drug approvals. "We expect this environment to continue but look forward to the prospect of lower interest rates in 2024." Analysts have said the rich price reflects the opportunity for ImmunoGen's Elahere cancer treatment , which has quickly established itself as the standard of care for types of ovarian cancer. Dividend-paying stocks took a backseat to this year's tech-driven market rally, but 2024 could be the year that they come back in vogue. A couple of catalysts could swing the pendulum back in favor of dividend payers in 2024, including the Fed's forecast for three rate cuts in the new year. "Not only do you get the dividend yield and dividend growth, but you get some capital appreciation perhaps – that's where it gets interesting," he added. Special dividend payers Kim Abmeyer, certified financial planner and founder of Abmeyer Wealth Management in Dallas, sees dividend-paying stocks coming into focus for 2024. The energy company in November announced that it raised its regular dividend by 10% and it declared a $1.50 per share special dividend.

Prices of used electric vehicles are down roughly 30% year over year, according to market research studies using data from September and October. The cheaper prices might bode well for buyers, but they raise concerns that low resale values could hurt EV adoption among mainstream consumers. The falling prices also add fuel to a debate over whether EV demand is faltering. "The mainstream appeal of these cars is still not there," said Karl Brauer, executive analyst for iSeeCars, a search engine for used cars. Edmunds, which provides a range of automotive data services, said in its Q3 2023 Used Vehicle Report that "the low resale values for used EVs could become a major deterrent to new EV purchases and EV adoption more broadly."

OPEC is facing growing challenges in its efforts to boost oil prices amid record output outside the alliance, particularly in the U.S., raising questions about how long the alliance can maintain its deep production cuts. The outcome is a "bittersweet victory" for OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia, wrote Jorge Leon, senior vice president of Rystad Energy, in a note Thursday. With oil prices down more than 14% since September highs, traders were hoping that OPEC could provide a boost. In the end, Saudi Arabia may have only one option — launch a supply war by flooding the market with oil. The 2.2 million bpd in voluntary cuts from the coalition of the willing is somewhat deceiving.

Further uptake of the blockbuster weight loss drugs rocking the health-care world can bode well for select energy drink makers and fitness-focused retailers, Stifel said.
