It’s clearer than ever after months of close polling and years of intense polarization: Who wins the 2024 presidential election could come down to tiny differences in who votes and who stays home. But an analysis of the poll also shows how the composition of the electorate and small changes in who decides to vote could lead to small but important swings in the election. The more Democratic-leaning turnout universe is one that sees more women, nonwhite voters and higher-educated voters turning out, as well as those from the cities and suburbs. And the one favoring Republicans relies on the opposite: more white people, more men, more voters without college degrees and more from rural communities. But in the meantime, the analysis shows how small changes can have a big effect on a close election.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid shoved a newspaper columnist during an altercation Saturday, according to multiple reports. The altercation happened in the 76ers’ locker room after the team’s 124-107 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, according to multiple reporters who were in the locker room for a postgame media availability. Embiid reportedly shoved Marcus Hayes, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. In his column, Hayes mentioned Embiid’s son and late brother as reasons for why Embiid should start playing. Before the current season, Embiid said in an effort to help preserve his knees — which have both required surgery in the past — he would “probably never” play in back-to-back games again in his career.

With Election Day around the corner, there's been just shy of $1 billion spent on political ads up and down the ballot in the last week, data from the ad-tracking firm AdImpact shows. The most expensive race over the last week is, unsurprisingly, the presidential race, where more than $272 million has been spent on ads, according to data from AdImpact. There's been more than $267 million spent on ads in down-ballot races, meaning all of the other races outside of races for president, governor and Congress. One other down-ballot race saw more than $10 million in ad spending over the last week: California's referendum on rent control. Governors races have had just $18 million in ad spending in the last week, thanks to a relative lack of competitive races this cycle.

Election officials warn they’re outmatched and struggling to combat the wave of falsehoods coming from Musk and his platform. Manipulating early voting numbersIn 2020, Trump attacked early voting and mail-in voting, claiming they were used to cheat. Election officials have been inundated with threats of violence since the 2020 election. But Trump and his allies have been laying the groundwork to try to dispute the election should he lose. In Georgia, conservatives sought to allow county election officials to refuse to certify the election results, though the effort was blocked by a state judge.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — David Shockley doesn’t understand his son Darius’ political ideology. “It makes no sense,” said David, who is Black and plans to vote for former President Donald Trump for a second time. The latest NBC News Stay Tuned Gen Z poll, powered by SurveyMonkey, found that more than half of Gen Z respondents ages 18 to 29 say they have different political views than at least one of their parents. Both David and Darius — two Black men in a battleground state — are emblematic of a voter base that Democrats and Republicans see as integral to success. “Despite the chasm between the political views, we still come together on our—” said David as he searched for the right word.

Almost 50,000 pounds of artisanal cheese were stolen in a sophisticated heist in the UK. AdvertisementOne of the most sophisticated cheese heists in history has left British cheesemakers reeling and facing an uncertain future. Neal's Yard unwittingly delivered the cheese, estimated to be worth about £300,000 ($390,000), to the fraudsters before realizing they were not legitimate buyers. "One of the things that made it so appealing was thinking that we'd see British cheese in a French supermarket." Calver said Neals Yard Dairy's ability to survive the financial loss is critical for the sector.

Some internal proposals to support election officials’ efforts to combat disinformation have made little headway. Jen Easterly, director of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, in an interview in Washington, DC, on October 2, 2024. Ben Curtis/APThe agency has advised election officials on how to communicate clearly with voters and to prepare for security incidents. Some election officials interviewed by CNN were skeptical about the federal government’s ability to debunk election lies that are part of a broader rise of misinformation in America. The agency now has a team of former election officials who provide physical and cybersecurity services to election offices around the country.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday handed a loss to Republicans by allowing Pennsylvania voters who sent mail-in ballots that were flagged as being potentially defective to submit a separate provisional in-person ballot. The justices rejected, with no noted dissents, a Republican request to put on hold a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling from last week. The Supreme Court action does not definitively resolve the legal issue, which could yet return to the justices. Many of Pennsylvania's counties, which administer elections, already allowed for voters to cast provisional ballots if their mail-in ballots lacked a secrecy envelope even before the recent state Supreme Court ruling. Genser and Matis lost in a trial court, but an intermediate appeals court and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in their favor, prompting Republicans to appeal again to the U.S. Supreme Court.

One other potential scenario looms this fall: the "contingent election" of the president and the vice president that would happen if no one can secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. That has not happened in the modern era, but there are a few conceivable (if unlikely) paths across the Electoral College map that could lead to former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris ending the race tied at 269 electoral votes. In the event of a tie, Congress would decide the next president. “Each state, regardless of population, casts a single vote for President in a contingent election,” according to the Congressional Research Service. Although Washington, D.C., has three electoral votes in the presidential election, it would not have a vote in the House in a contingent election because it is not a state.

CNN —In the closely watched battleground state of Michigan, election officials are under the microscope, with isolated mistakes or missteps serving as fodder for election deniers to lay the groundwork for widespread doubt of election results. Some of the confusion appears to have originated from a post on X by Matthew DePerno, one of the more high-profile election deniers in Michigan. DePerno has pleaded not guilty in the voting machines case. Those rules were in the spotlight in 2020, after Joe Biden won a handful of key battleground states by a razor-thin margin. Ahead of Election Day, here's a refresher of the recount rules in the states expected to be the closest in the presidential race. A bipartisan group of lawmakers approved new measures in 2024 that would shorten the time needed for a potential recount. Then, after the state certified Biden's victory, the Trump campaign requested a machine recount, as was its right under state law. The state recently enacted changes to Michigan's recount law, but none will go into effect before Election Day.

What we learned from the 2024 World Series

You’re the winner, friend, because you’ve learned something about baseball during the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series, four games to one. They might have played the sloppiest inning in World Series history, if not the sloppiest game in World Series history. It was certainly the sloppiest game from a World Series team facing elimination, and I’m not fact-checking that. The World Series was promoted like “Godzilla vs. Kong,” except one of the monsters got hurt before he could do anything.

Investors Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz said Chinese EVs are beating out American and European automakers. Andreessen Horowitz founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz said on their podcast that Chinese automakers have developed high-quality and affordable vehicles supported by a robust supply chain ecosystem. With the American auto industry struggling with slowing growth in its EV market, American automakers need to be able to offer a compelling $20,000 EV that also competes on quality if the US doesn't want to "lose the auto industry," Andreessen said. Andreessen said that Chinese car brands are outperforming American EV automakers in affordability and quality, calling them "super technologically sophisticated." Uncomfortable Haley voters weigh their options with Election Day loomingBy Ben KamisarKamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican critics of Donald Trump hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. Such was the reaction among the 11 focus group participants in a new NBC News Deciders Focus Group conducted Monday evening, produced in collaboration with Syracuse University and the research firms Engagious and Sago. “Most of the voters we heard from have known for months which camp they’re in,” she continued. Four of these 11 voters plan to vote for Trump or are leaning that way, with another choosing between Trump and a write-in or third party.

September's payrolls report exceeded expectations, but economists see weak gains for October. Even with lower expectations, a poor print could reset the market's narrative around a soft landing. AdvertisementThe narrative around ongoing labor-market strength revived with September's payrolls report, which topped economists' expectations by over 100,000 jobs. "The October jobs report will likely show a severe but short-lived hit from hurricanes Helene and Milton," Adams said. Another sign that September's jobs numbers may have been overstated is that other employment indicators haven't started to trend upwards.

Mr. Troyer, the Republican, moved to a more Republican neighborhood. Mr. Biden won Georgia in 2020, the first time a Democrat won the state since 1992. Over the same span, at least 10,000 more Republicans than Democrats moved out of the state — a third of them to Florida. In Pennsylvania, this year’s key battleground, Democratic gains actually came amid population loss: For both parties, more voters moved out than in. Partisans from both sides routinely cite early voting data to promote their candidates and express optimism or try to juice turnout based on supposedly weak numbers. Like many political observers, including at CNN, Musk has noticed the better-than-2020 GOP performance in early voting in North Carolina, Nevada and other key states. Registered Republicans make up about 32% of the early vote in Pennsylvania so far, up from 21% at this point in 2020. The improved GOP position in early voting that Musk highlighted is happening in other states as well. Not all registered Republicans will vote for Trump, and not all registered Democrats will back Harris.
