The narrow stock market rally could broaden out beyond megacap tech, and investors should target the "Magnificent 80" stocks, according to Bank of America's Savita Subramanian. Both are key reasons Subramanian sees the market rally broadening, alongside an expected spike in volatility tied to the U.S. election and Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. To play the expected widening market rally, Subramanian points toward the so-called "Magnificent 80" stocks, which are composed largely of companies with strong fundamentals. These names, which Bank of America screened for, have higher equity income potential than cash, touting competitive dividend yields. Here are a few of those Magnificent 80 companies that are rated buy by Bank of America.

DETROIT (AP) — A couple of blocks from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Electrify America is about to open an indoor charging station that lets drivers relax in a lounge while their electric vehicle batteries are being filled up. On Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, Tesla is building a combination drive-in restaurant, movie theater and charging station. Several convenience store chains have set up charging stations outside their businesses and offer food, restrooms and 24-hour service for EV owners. He said he doesn't necessarily think charging stations with more amenities will become a big attraction for most EV owners. Sometimes, businesses near charging stations are closed, and there's no place to go while charging.

DETROIT — Ford Motor is rethinking its electric vehicle strategies, including "reassessing" the need for vertical integration of batteries, CEO Jim Farley said Tuesday. He also said the company is pulling a target for its EV unit that called for 8% margin by 2026. As Ford pulls back and reevaluates the EV business, it intends to lean in on sales of hybrid vehicles, specifically trucks. The company expects its hybrid sales to increase 40% this year. TOKYO (AP) — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer. In April, a whistleblower exposed that Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is 100% owned by Toyota, had been cheating on its testing for decades. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003. But production has been halted on some of the models, including the 10 models affected by the latest cheating. Sato has acknowledged Toyota group companies need better communication and education about the importance of complying with rules.

DETROIT – General Motors is changing its product lineup strategy to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, CEO Mary Barra told investors Tuesday. More companies are reconsidering the viability of hybrid vehicles to appease consumer demand and avoid costly penalties related to those federal fuel economy and emissions standards. Most of GM's main competitors offer traditional hybrids as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The only hybrid GM currently offers in the U.S. is a traditional hybrid version of the Chevrolet Corvette. GM led the way for plug-in electric vehicles with the Chevrolet Volt during the 2010s.

Tesla's stock faces plenty of downside as the automaker's strategy of slashing vehicle prices eats into profits without translating into substantially higher revenue, according to JPMorgan. Tesla's stock closed down 12% on Thursday after the automaker reported softer than expected earnings this week and warned that vehicle volume growth "may be notably lower" this year. While vehicle volume grew by 20% in the fourth quarter, actual automotive revenue was basically flat at 1% growth compared to the year-ago period, according to JPMorgan. "Tesla did not trade profits for sales as measured in revenue — it has traded profits for sales as measured in unit volume," Brinkman told clients. Profit expectations for Tesla have fallen substantially since October 2022 when analysts were forecasting $28.5 billion for 2024, according to JPMorgan.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk failed to address investors' concerns about price cuts in "another train wreck of a conference call" this week, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives told clients in a Thursday research note. Ives slashed his 12-month stock price target for Tesla by 10% to $315, which still implies about 52% upside from Wednesday's close. The analyst told clients that Tesla's botched earnings call has shaken Wedbush's near-term confidence in the company's story. "Instead we got a high level Tesla long term view with another train wreck conference call," the analyst said. Ives described Tesla's price cuts as a "Category 4 hurricane" in the near term.

Read previewThe push by US businesses to make more stuff in America has an ongoing challenge: It's hard to find workers. Ulbrich says this stands in sharp contrast to Mexico, whose growing manufacturing base could entice companies to make supply chain investments there, rather than in the US. Even as the pandemic-era labor shortage has eased, the demand for construction and factory workers has continued to exceed supply. Mexico's median age is roughly 30, he added — compared to nearly 40 in China — which has contributed to a strong labor supply. Compared to Mexico, manufacturing in the US would likely offer businesses reduced supply chain disruptions and lower transportation costs.

Ford announced Friday it's reducing production of its F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck, starting April 1, due to slowing demand for EVs. The automaker said the Lightning cuts are being made to achieve the "optimal balance of production, sales growth and profitability." But since Ford is cutting back EV production, the automaker's goal of scaling up its EV buildout could be delayed. In fact, the Maverick Hybrid sales exceeded the F-150 Hybrid last year with a 67% increase to more than 52,300 vehicles. The $9.3 billion in additional costs through 2028 is for deals with the UAW as well as Canadian union Unifor, and translates to about $575 per vehicle over the life of the deals. GM's new guidance reduced expected net income attributable to stockholders for 2023 to a range of $9.1 billion to $9.7 billion, compared to the previous outlook of $9.3 billion to $10.7 billion. That includes an estimated $1.1 billion EBIT-adjusted impact from the UAW strike, which lasted just over six weeks, primarily from lost production. GM had approximately 1.37 billion shares of common stock outstanding prior to the buyback program, the company said. Stellantis will lift its 2030 revenue target for its recycling and reconditioning unit after its revenue grew 25% so far this year, the automaker's CEO said on Thursday, adding that the business would help make electric vehicles more affordable. Rising prices and reduced availability of raw materials, as well as environmental costs to extract them, are pushing manufacturers and regulators to reuse and recycle more. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said volatility in raw materials prices made electric vehicles (EV) less affordable for consumers. "We aim to set up a stable flow of supplies for raw materials ... avoiding market ups and downs. This means less inflation," Tavares said in Turin as he inaugurated the automaker's first hub for its recycling and reconditioning business, now part of its 'circular economy' unit.

UBS has identified the stocks set to benefit from the growth of next-generation "solid-state" battery electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries are viewed as a potential breakthrough technology because they can store more energy than lithium-ion batteries and charge faster. Toyota's targets for solid-state batteries are about double the capacity of the longest-range Tesla vehicles. The automaker's planned transition to solid-state batteries for its EVs by the late 2020s makes the company's stock an attractive investment, according to the investment bank. The table below shows some of the global stocks best positioned to capitalize on the shift to solid-state batteries, according to UBS: UBS named Toyota Industries , which has already partnered with Toyota Motor on developing lithium-ion batteries, as another stock that could benefit from the shift to solid-state batteries.

The ruling is a setback for Tesla after the company won two product liability trials in California earlier this year over the Autopilot driver assistant system. Banner's attorney, Lake "Trey" Lytal III, said they are "extremely proud of this result based in the evidence of punitive conduct." The judge also cited a 2016 video showing a Tesla vehicle driving without human intervention as a way to market Autopilot.
