New York CNN —Bernard “Bernie” Marcus, the billionaire Home Depot cofounder and a Republican megadonor, who in recent years became an outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump, has died, the company announced Tuesday. “The entire Home Depot family is deeply saddened by the death of our cofounder Bernie Marcus,” The Home Depot said in a statement. The Home Depot got its start in Atlanta, a city where Marcus was a well-known philanthropist with his wife Billi. Some Trump opponents attempted to launch a boycott of The Home Depot in 2016 and in 2019 because of Marcus’ support of the Republican nominee for president. ☆ Remains of nearly 30 Civil War veterans found in a Seattle funeral home’s storage are laid to rest

Pawtucket, Rhode Island AP —For several decades, the cremated remains of more than two dozen American Civil War veterans languished in storage facilities at a funeral home and cemetery in Seattle. The simple copper and cardboard urns gathering dust on shelves only had the name of each of the 28 soldiers – but nothing linking them to the Civil War. While some remains are hidden away in funeral homes, others were found where they fell in battle or by Civil War re-enactors combing old graveyards. The remains of several more Civil War veterans were sent to Maine, Rhode Island and other places where family connections were found. Bruce Frail and his son Ben – both long active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – were on hand for service.

They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. After negotiations broke down in early July 2023, Atlanta-based UPS reached a contract agreement with the Teamsters just days before an Aug. 1 deadline. The Culinary Workers Union announced on the social platform X that the deal came together after a year of negotiations. The lead up to the tentative agreement included a three-day strike involving 75,000 workers in multiple states. The tentative agreement also included protective terms around subcontracting and outsourcing, as well as initiatives to invest in the current workforce and address a staffing crisis.

I talked to Jennifer Agiesta, CNN’s director of polling and election analytics, about how CNN approaches the job of projecting a winner.
