Thousands of Venezuelans marched across the South American country on Saturday over its contested election, as President Nicolas Maduro told supporters some 2,000 people had been arrested during protests against the results. The published election result sparked widespread allegations of fraud and protests. Subsequently security forces cracked down on protests which Maduro’s government labeled part of an attempted U.S.-backed coup. “This time there will be no forgiveness,” Maduro told supporters at a rally in Caracas, where he said some 2,000 people had been detained in connection to “crimes” during the protests. During the week, some Venezuelans have appeared outside police stations seeking news of their detained family members.

Darja Stefancic, a painter in Slovenia known for technicolor landscapes, thought it strange when an obscure online art gallery run by a woman from Argentina contacted her out of the blue and asked her to join its thin roster of artists. The painter suspected a scam, and she worried that the gallery, which virtually nobody in Slovenia’s tiny, tight-knit art scene had heard of, “just wanted to cheat people.”It did — but in ways that far surpassed even her darkest suspicions. The online gallery was a front for Russian intelligence, part of an elaborate network of deep-cover sleeper spies trained to impersonate Argentines, Brazilians and other foreign nationals by Russia’s foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, around Europe. They were real-life versions of the fictional stars of “The Americans,” a television series inspired by the 2010 arrest of a ring of actual Russian sleeper agents in the United States.

Venezuela's opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia thanked the U.S. on Friday for recognizing him as the official winner of Sunday's controversial presidential election, in which both González Urrutia and President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory. "Those tally sheets indicate that Edmundo González Urrutia received the most votes in this election by an insurmountable margin," Blinken said in a statement Thursday. "Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won." Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, center left, and opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González, center right, greet supporters at a protest against the result of the presidential election in Caracas, Venezuela, on Tuesday. The controversy over the election results is fueling fears of increased protests and violence amid the international debate and lack of consensus.

But his disability comes with its own unique set of challenges, one which Smith describes as “hard work. This was a day to forget for the United States men’s soccer team. As seen from the graphic below, Morocco dominated the game in key statistical metrics, ending the United States’ hopes of a medal. Thus concludes the United States men’s two-tournament summer. Tanner Tessmann was at the heart of most of the United States’ positive passages. It won’t inspire many hearts and minds, but the United States did exactly that in the first half against Morocco — save for one ill-advised wag of Harriel’s leg.

Place de la Concorde, Paris CNN —Triumph and tragedy are everywhere you look at the Olympics, and the men’s BMX park final on Wednesday had a surfeit of both. As for the triumph, take José Torres Gil, the Argentinian rider who won his country’s first individual gold medal in a cycling discipline with a stunning initial score of 94.82. Great Britain’s Keiran Reilly took silver after packing trick after trick into his second run, hauling himself above Jeanjean with the final act of the competition. “It’s not easy at all when you’ve been training day-in, day-out for a year and you fall on the first trick, the first run,” Jeanjean said.

CNN —Venezuelans across the country took to the streets on Monday to protest a disputed election, clashing with police as uncertainty swirls around the results amid allegations of election fraud. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro after the presidential election results were announced in Caracas on July 29, 2024. Though Maduro supporters celebrated his win in parts of Caracas, Monday was marked by wider protests by the opposition. Many regional and world leaders have cast doubt on the results, including the United States – though some of Venezuela’s partners have stood by Maduro. Once the fifth-largest economy in Latin America, Venezuela has experienced the worst economic collapse of a peacetime country in recent history.

The Olympic Games have long been governed by a tacit code: If fans can’t say anything nice, they shouldn’t say anything at all. As far as the French are concerned, though, there appears to be one exception: anyone wearing the sky blue and white of Argentina. In the opening few days of the Paris Games, Argentina was booed before, during and after a men’s soccer game in Marseille. It was heartily booed for three days straight every time its men’s rugby sevens team appeared at a packed Stade de France. And it was booed again whenever one of those rugby players had the temerity to touch the ball.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —After all these years, Rafael Nadal is still finding new ways to win matches on his favorite tennis court. The victory against two seasoned doubles players was by no means easy, likely a sign of the limited time that Nadal and Alcaraz have spent training and playing together. But it was nonetheless an entertaining introduction to tennis’ new favorite double act. Another break of serve followed two games later, which Alcaraz had engineered with a cross-court backhand, before Nadal was able to serve out for the match. And who can blame him when he’s still winning on his favorite court, all to the applause of thousands of fans?

An unspoken question lingers on people's faces when they hear our family of five took a gap year to travel around South America. We budgeted about $12,000 for flights, estimating six one-way flights at about $2,000 each for our family of five. All told, we expected the trip to cost about $60,000, or less than a year of life at home in Chicagoland. We funded our trip by renting out our home in the Chicago suburbs, which covered our home upkeep and nearly 40% of our travel expenses. On the trip, we didn't know where we'd be in two months or how much money we'd bring in.

The game, however, had not ended; it had merely paused. Morocco played out the final few minutes, the stadium now empty, and won, 2-1. Officially, that is how the game finished.

Interest in emerging markets has been growing and investors are now looking out for sectors and stocks best placed to benefit. "Emerging markets are too important to ignore," says Malcolm Dorson, a senior portfolio manager at the U.S.-headquartered Mirae Asset, which has around $600 billion in assets under management. "Emerging markets have a multi-decade story with significant opportunities. More than 4 billion people live across emerging markets, Dorson noted, adding that each country will have "significant domestic consumption stories [and] long-term opportunities." One of the simplest routes to investing in emerging markets is through exchange-traded funds.

CNN —Two shots a year of a drug currently used to treat HIV infections were dramatically effective at preventing infections in a study among young women and adolescent girls in Africa. The twice-yearly injection of the drug lenacapavir can provide total protection against HIV infections, demonstrating 100% efficacy in Phase 3 trial data released by drugmaker Gilead and published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The twice-a-year injections of lenacapavir could add another option at preventing HIV infections to the toolbox. The latest Phase 3 findings are part of Gilead’s PURPOSE program, which comprises five HIV prevention trials around the world. “While Gilead awaits additional phase 3 clinical trial data and the potential regulatory filings for HIV prevention administered twice-yearly, it is too early to state the price of lenacapavir for PrEP (prevention).
