Inside the ‘Shakespearean Drama’ of the Murdoch Family
  + stars: | 2024-08-03 | by ( John Otis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“That was a sign to ‘Murdoch watchers’ that something was up,” said Jim Rutenberg, a New York Times reporter who broke the news about Mr. Murdoch’s engagement. Mr. Rutenberg, who writes about politics and culture, has long reported on the Murdoch family. In 2019, he and Jonathan Mahler wrote an exhaustive article for The Times Magazine about the Murdochs’ sprawling media empire and its global influence. “That, for better or worse, sort of cemented us as the experts on this family,” said Mr. Mahler, who covers various topics for the magazine, including politics and entertainment. The outcome will determine who will have control of the empire after Mr. Murdoch’s death.

And workers themselves welcome the new culture of flexibility that offers them a better work-life balance. AdvertisementThere is no doubt that the transition is underway, Ravin Jesuthasan, a renowned future-of-work expert and author of "The Skills-Powered Organization," told Business Insider. However, some organizations exhibit a certain amount of inertia when it comes to adapting to the new working culture. There's lots of people who want to come work here, and so this is our culture and this is how we're going to sustain our culture," Jesuthasan said. The most important thing is that people have to understand the logic of why you create these rules," the future-of-work expert said.

However, in New York, where Abad lived briefly in the 1970s, while studying painting at the Art Students League, her work has been scarce. The Museum of Modern Art owns nothing by her, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art just acquired its first piece. During her life, she proposed shows to U.S. museums and received around 100 rejection letters, her family has said. MoMA PS1 is hosting the first retrospective dedicated to Abad, which was organized by Victoria Sung at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where it ran last year. It consists of more than 50 works, and while it should be two or four times larger — she was protean and prolific — it is still thrilling.

When CNN Travel asked Australian film star Chris Hemsworth for advice on avoiding drop bears in 2018, he said: “Bring an umbrella.”The origins of the drop bearDespite the drop bear’s popularity and growing international reputation, its actual origins are unknown. CNN —A fossilized mammoth skull, centuries-old ceramics and Banksy’s famous self-shredding painting are among hundreds of high-value collectibles on show at Sotheby’s ambitious new retail outpost in Hong Kong. With younger collectors seemingly in mind, items on the first floor range in price from 5,000 to 50 million Hong Kong dollars ($640 to $6.4 million). The venture is the latest signal that major auction houses still consider Hong Kong to be their long-term hub in Asia. In June, Hermès also unveiled its expanded retail space in the neighborhood. NEW YORK AP —Tucked within the expansive Native American halls of the American Museum of Natural History is a diminutive wooden doll that holds a sacred place among the tribes whose territories once included Manhattan. The American Museum of Natural History, he noted, is one of New York’s major tourism draws and also a mainstay for generations of area students learning about the region’s tribes. Much has been made of the political pirouette J.D. Vance executed to secure the embrace of Donald J. Trump, a man he once called “cultural heroin” before seeking his endorsement for the Senate and, Wednesday night, accepting the Republican nomination to be his vice president. Old friends and former classmates have expressed bewilderment at the seemingly irreconcilable versions of Mr. Vance. Mr. Vance used his personal account of overcoming dysfunctional Appalachian family values to tell a larger story about forgotten Americans. In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he leaned again into those themes, at one point drawing attention to his mother, “who struggled with money and addiction but never gave up.” She stood in the audience when he continued, “And I’m proud to say that tonight my mom is here, 10 years clean and sober.”

Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething steps down

First Minister of Wales Vaughan Gething gives a speech during King Charles III and Queen Camilla visit to the Senedd in Cardiff, to mark its 25th anniversary on July 11, 2024 in Cardiff, Wales. Vaughan Gething said on Tuesday he would step down as first minister of Wales, after four ministers resigned from the devolved Welsh government in protest over his leadership. "Having been elected as leader of my party in March, I had hoped that over the summer a period of reflection, rebuilding and renewal could take place under my leadership," Gething said in a statement. Four Welsh ministers - Counsel General Mick Antoniw, housing minister Julie James, economy and energy secretary Jeremy Miles and culture minister Lesley Griffiths resigned earlier in the day. Gething has been criticized over the source of a political donation, the transparency of his disclosures to the COVID-19 inquiry from his time as health minister, and his decision to dismiss a minister after accusing her of leaking to the media.
