CNN —It was perhaps fitting that Shohei Ohtani should achieve one of baseball’s most remarkable feats with an out-of-this-world performance. But despite being kept away from the mound, Ohtani has had a phenomenal debut season with the Dodgers. Ohtani smacks his 50th home run of the season, and with it, earns the first 50/50 in MLB history. Megan Briggs/Getty ImagesEven without pitching this season, Ohtani is still the odds-on favorite to win the NL MVP award, potentially the first to do so having played solely as a designated hitter (DH). A betrayal off the fieldAll the while, Ohtani’s record-breaking season on the diamond has come against the backdrop of off-field challenges.

New York Democrats offered a wide array of excuses for their disastrous 2022 midterms, when Republicans flipped four seats outside New York City on their way to winning a narrow US House majority. Now, less than two months out from the 2024 general election, the state party, its campaign season allies, chastened candidates and Gov. D’Esposito is one of five New York GOP freshmen facing an onslaught from Democrats determined to claw back suburban voters. “New York is the reason Democrats lost the House in 2022,” said Pamela Shifman, president of the Democracy Alliance, a liberal group spending big in New York this year. “There’s more focus than there was the last couple cycles, both from the state party, but also obviously the national committees,” the strategist said.

The Federal Reserve is poised to make its first interest rate cut in years on Wednesday. While mortgage rates are partly influenced by the Fed's policy, they are also tied to Treasury yields and the economy. Home loan rates have already started to come down in recent weeks, slightly induced in part by favorable economic data and indications the Fed could cut rates. As of Thursday, Sept. 12, the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage in the U.S. was 6.20%, according to Freddie Mac data via the Fed. "It's almost impossible to figure out what mortgage rates are going to do from week to week or month to month," Ostrowski said.

American gymnast Jordan Chiles has appealed to the Switzerland supreme court to reclaim her bronze medal from the Paris Olympics, Chiles’s attorneys announced Monday. During the women’s floor exercise final in Paris, Chiles was moved up to third place — and awarded bronze — after challenging the judges’ score over one of the elements in her routine. However, she was moved down to fifth days later after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (based in Switzerland) ruled her challenge was submitted four seconds late. The International Olympic Committee then awarded bronze to Romania’s Ana Bărbosu and asked Chiles to return her medal. Chiles has appealed to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland to overturn the decision.

CNN —Jordan Chiles filed an appeal of the decision that led to the US gymnast being stripped of an Olympic bronze medal, her attorneys announced Monday. Chiles was stripped of her first individual Olympic medal after the Romanian gymnastics team challenged the decision to revise her final score in the floor exercise to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Chiles has now opted to appeal CAS’ decision to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland – where CAS is based. “Jordan Chiles’ appeals present the international community with an easy legal question—will everyone stand by while an Olympic athlete who has done only the right thing is stripped of her medal because of fundamental unfairness in an ad-hoc arbitration process? The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said they are determined to see Chiles receive the recognition she deserves.

If you want — or need — to travel this holiday season, start planning now because the ideal time to book Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's travel is fast approaching. "The most important thing is for travelers to continue to think about planning now and booking in October," said Hayley Berg, lead economist at travel site Hopper. "That window of low prices is brief, but it can really pay off." Whenever you decide to confirm your reservations, keep in mind that traveling during the holiday season can be fraught with complications, said Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet. "The holidays are a difficult time to travel because not only are you dealing with what's likely to be tougher holiday weather, but also working with bigger crowds," said French.

Michael Proctor, the Massachusetts state trooper suspended over his conduct while he was investigating Karen Read, will not testify in another high-profile case on which he was a lead investigator, prosecutors said. The department devoted dozens of additional officers to investigating the case, the filing says. The filing cites Proctor’s testimony in the Read case, in which he testified that he made derogatory comments about Read to his family, friends and supervisors, and it says the prosecutor’s office is reviewing data extracted from the trooper’s cellphone. The agency had opened an internal affairs investigation into allegations of "serious misconduct" raised at trial, a state police official said at the time. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud, interstate transportation for a scheme to defraud and unlawful monetary transaction, the prosecutor's office said.

Owning a home makes some people feel more confident about their prospects for retirement — but that may be misguided, some experts say. Of those who said they were ahead or on schedule, 42% cite an early start in retirement savings helped them get ahead. The survey polled 6,657 adults, including 2,603 retired adults and 4,054 adult workers, in August. "Homeowners are actually more likely to be overconfident in their retirement readiness," Chen said. "There's a lot of misconception in terms of how people assess whether they are ahead or not in retirement."

More than 70 LGBTQ models and eight designers took over the Brooklyn Museum on Thursday night for dapperQ’s ninth annual queer fashion show, "Presents Nine," coinciding with the start of New York Fashion Week. Hundreds of attendees crowded the perimeter of the runway, cheering, chanting — and sometimes screaming — as models strutted across the stage. Jorge Garcia for NBC NewsWhile the event is not part of the official New York Fashion Week lineup, dapperQ, a digital magazine dedicated to covering queer fashion as a form of activism, intentionally makes its show just as big of a spectacle. The idea for the event came to founder Anita Dolce Vita more than a decade ago, when she started receiving invitations to NYFW shows. “I would come back with very little content that would be relevant to our readers and our communities,” Dolce Vita told NBC News.

The average rate for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage dropped to 6.35% on August 29 from 6.46% a week ago, the lowest mortgage rates have been in 15 months, according to Freddie Mac. "I bought a house when [the mortgage rate] was 15% and then I refinanced." "No bank is ever going to give you a true no closing cost loan at the lowest possible rate. And buying with the goal of refinancing is always taking a gamble on mortgage rates, which comes with a certain amount of risk. Even though recent declines in mortgage rates may gain steam as the Fed lowers its benchmark rate, lower mortgage rates could also boost homebuying demand, which would push prices higher.

That's because the National Flood Insurance Program — the government-sponsored public insurance program that is the largest flood insurer in the U.S. — needs to be reauthorized by Sept. 30 to continue to issue new policies or increase coverage on existing policies. "There are very few private insurers that offer any type of flood insurance," said Daniel Schwarcz, a professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School who focuses on insurance law and regulation. In that report, from 2011, it estimated a one-month NFIP lapse could affect about 40,000 closings.
