As part of delivering the final recommendations of the inquiry, known as the Brereton Report, Marles had written to several officers who served in Afghanistan, to inform them that medals awarded for service would be withdrawn, the defense minister said. “The allegations which are the subject of the Brereton Report are arguably the most serious allegations of Australian war crimes in our history,” Marles told Parliament on Thursday. Trump and Harris — who had not met until Tuesday night at their fiery debate – even shook hands for the second time in less than 24 hours. 9/11 is now far enough in the past that it’s taking on a historic hue. The gathering of past, present and future US leaders Tuesday was a reminder of the still unfolding cascade of political consequences triggered by the attacks. And, underscoring the passage of time, some young voters born after 9/11 will this year vote in their second presidential election. But the world’s worst terror attack still has a powerful psychological and political half-life and is embedded deep in America’s soul, as we are reminded every September.
