Behrouz Esbati, an Iranian general, partially blamed Russia for the fall of Bashar Assad in Syria. In a speech in Tehran, Esbati accused Russia of bombing an empty desert instead of hitting Syrian rebels. A top Iranian general has accused Russia of lying to Tehran by saying its jets were attacking Syrian rebels while they were instead bombing the open desert. The general also largely blamed internal corruption for Assad's fall, saying that bribery was rife among Syria's top-ranking officials and generals. Taiwan officials have not cited direct evidence that the ship damaged the cable, and the Taiwan Coast Guard said in a statement Monday that it could not determine the vessel’s intentions. While there was no direct evidence the vessel sabotaged the submarine cable, radar showed the vessel passed by when the cable was cut, the official said. The ship was also found to be using two different positioning system numbers, according to the Taiwan Coast Guard, which is also seen by experts as unusual for standard cargo operations. But he said Taiwan needs to bolster maritime surveillance and defense of submarine cables. Chinese naval and coast guard vessels have plied regional waters, and there has been an increase in Chinese aircraft operating around the island.

As devastated Angelenos search for answers to the raging fires that have leveled entire neighborhoods, one oft-repeated explanation has been the slashing of the fire department’s budget. Even Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of The Los Angeles Times, took to X to blast Mayor Karen Bass for the cuts. That included eliminating 73 vacant civilian positions and reducing money available to pay firefighters’ overtime by $7.9 million. Lebanon’s fractured Parliament overcame more than two years of gridlock on Thursday to choose a new president, a critical step toward bringing stability to a country attempting to recover from economic catastrophe and a devastating war. Lawmakers elected Gen. Joseph Aoun, the commander of the Lebanese military, by an overwhelming majority in the second round of voting, after he failed to achieve the necessary majority in the initial vote. The election — which frequently descended into shouting matches — also came at an unnerving time for Lebanon and the wider region. In neighboring Syria, an untested new government is attempting to chart a path forward and rebuild after years of civil war. The fall of the Assad regime in Syria and the defeat of Hezbollah mean a sudden loss of power for their patron, Iran.

NATO allies have been bracing for US support for Ukraine to shrink over the next year. The Biden administration has tried to leave Ukraine in the strongest possible position as it prepares for the incoming Trump administration, both on the battlefield and in the event of negotiations. Air defenses in Poland, now under the command of NATO, are a key part of protecting the logistics hubs that enable the flow of those weapons. It is not yet clear whether the Trump administration will continue to chair the forum, or whether a European country will have to take over. “The coalition to support Ukraine must not flinch.

A New York State appeals court on Thursday rejected a request by Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Corporation to dismiss part of a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit stemming from the broadcasting of misinformation around the 2020 presidential election. The lawsuit, filed by Smartmatic, a voting technology company, is on track to proceed to trial in state court in Manhattan, although the parties could settle the case out of court. Smartmatic sued Fox in February 2021, accusing the media conglomerate of defaming it by mentioning its name among false claims of vote-rigging in the 2020 election that were repeatedly aired on Fox News. Fox News agreed in 2023 to pay $787.5 million to settle a similar lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems, a different voting technology company.

Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles sought to deflect criticism of the city’s response to a series of uncontrolled wildfires during a news conference on Thursday in which she faced pointed questions about the city’s preparedness — and her own — ahead of what has become one of the biggest natural disasters in the state’s history. Ms. Bass dismissed a question about her leadership, saying that she was currently focused only on saving lives, and said any evaluation of mistakes or failures by “any body, department, individual” would come later. Ms. Bass was not in the city at the time; she had traveled to Ghana for the inauguration of that country’s new president and did not return to Los Angeles until Wednesday afternoon. The first question she faced on Thursday morning noted her absence, even as the city was issuing a news release warning about the fire’s potential. But later, she offered a glimpse into her own unease with the challenges firefighters have faced.

Facebook launched its fact-checking program in 2016, following criticism that it had facilitated the spread of so-called fake news leading up to the presidential election. In 2020, Meta’s program expanded and the company rolled out new features to address widespread misinformation around Covid and the 2020 election. Known as the Twitter Files, these series of posts on the platform alleged collusion between disinformation researchers, Twitter employees and government agencies, to censor conservatives. Jordan’s committee subpoenaed Zuckerberg and other tech companies for documents aimed at proving a conspiracy between government, disinformation researchers and Big Tech. “Yes, moderation is imperfect and yes, users across the political spectrum distrust it, but platform moderation policies reflect platform values,” DiResta said.

President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to block criminal proceedings in his hush money case in New York, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for Friday. They argue that the case should not go forward because Trump was protected by presidential immunity, as recognized by the Supreme Court last year. Trump's lawyers have filed a similar request at the New York State Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state. He then directed Trump’s sentencing on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to take place Friday morning. Trump's Supreme Court request was filed by lawyer D. Today, many consumers directly interact with AI through applications like ChatGPT or through summarized search results on Google or Apple. For now, the gains from this increased spending on AI tech and infrastructure have been relatively narrow both in terms of jobs and financial returns. Later that day, Amazon's AWS cloud-computing group announced it would spend $11 billion on AI-related investments in the state of Georgia. And in December, Japanese conglomerate Softbank held a joint news conference with Trump to announce $100 billion on AI-related spending in the U.S. One financial executive recently summarized the outsized weight of AI on the economy in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
