Former billionaire investor Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant’s lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwang’s borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks. Hwang’s co-defendant, former Archegos Chief Financial Officer Patrick Halligan, was convicted at the same trial on three criminal charges.

CNN —Social Security is by far one of the most popular government programs in the United States because it is critical for so many retirees’ financial security. More than half of non-retired US adults (53%) overall said they expect they will need to use Social Security to pay for necessary expenses, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Social Security benefits only replace a portion of Americans’ pre-retirement income. Indeed, only 31% of the non-retired adults surveyed said they are not planning to rely on Social Security benefits in retirement, with just 14% saying they will “not (be) at all” reliant on them. Their “normal retirement age” is 67 for the purposes of collecting Social Security benefits.

While the S & P 500 and Nasdaq 100 have both pushed to new all-time highs in November, market breadth indicators have mostly not confirmed those recent highs. Market breadth indicators like these are equal-weighted, meaning they simply count the number of stocks fulfilling a certain requirement. The change in that indicator over the last six weeks tells us that about 20% of the S & P 500 members have registered a sell signal on their point & figure charts! This chart shows the percent of stocks above their 200-day moving average, as well as the percent of stocks above their 50-day moving average as we quoted above. The S & P 500 continues to make higher lows, but a push below 5,850 would break that pattern which has been in place since August.

Employers know that prioritizing employee wellbeing is the right thing to do, but there are also business benefits. Indeed Introduces the 2024 Work Wellbeing 100, ranking the Top Publicly-Traded Companies for Work Wellbeing in the US. Oxford recently analyzed Indeed's work wellbeing dataset and highlighted a strong correlation between company wellbeing and business performance. Indeed's 2024 Global Work Wellbeing Report findings revealed that higher levels of employee wellbeing are associated with improved firm valuation, return on assets, and gross profits. Indeed reinforced the business case for work wellbeing by launching the Work Wellbeing 100, an index ranking the top 100 publicly traded companies based on their Indeed Work Wellbeing Score.

Following the trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 750 shares of AVGO, increasing its weighting to about 3.50% from about 3.25%. We're nibbling on Broadcom shares, buying back the second half of the 100 shares we sold in June at a split-adjusted price of $181. Like most chip stocks excluding Nvidia, Broadcom has fallen from its recent highs. Shares of this AI chip designer and software company have pulled back nearly 12% since closing at a high of nearly $186 apiece on Oct. 9. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio.
