Ukrainian state energy firm Naftogaz said in a Tuesday tweet that “Gazprom accused Ukraine of stealing gas. Russia is also sending gas to Europe via the TurkStream pipeline that runs through Turkey to Bulgaria. If Russia halted exports through Ukraine, Europe would lose about 4 billion cubic meters of gas — or just 1% of its estimated gas demand for 2022 — between December and March, Filippenko said. The continent’s gas storage facilities are nearly 95% full, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe. In this context, a total shut off of Moscow’s pipeline gas through Ukraine would cause “minimal” damage, Filippenko said.
But the increase in India's coal-fired power output has outstripped its regional peers, data from the government and analysts showed. India's power ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters GraphicsCLEAN ENERGY EFFORTSState-run Coal India, the country’s dominant coal miner, ramped up production to meet the utility demand. It reported a 13.5% year-on-year increase in its coal output in March-October to a record high of 432 million tonnes. Consultancy Wood Mackenzie expects India's coal-fired power output to grow 10% in 2022 compared to the previous year.
However, the volume of crude available to refineries was 14.22 million bpd, consisting of imports of 10.16 million bpd and domestic oil production of 4.06 million bpd. China exported 4.46 million tonnes of refined products in October, equivalent to around 1.15 million bpd, using the BP conversion rate of 8 barrels to one tonne. Fuel exports are expected to remain at elevated levels in November as refiners use up their remaining quotas for 2022. China's November crude imports are estimated at 11.46 million bpd by Refinitiv Oil Research, which would be an 11-month high. Overall, the recent strength in China's crude imports may not be long-lasting, especially if new refined fuel export quotas aren't granted.
Europe still can't live without Russian LNG exports

London CNN Business —Europe may be closer than ever to breaking its energy dependence on Moscow, but it still can’t live without one type of Russian natural gas. Russian imports doubled in the year to September to 1.2 million tons, Rystad data shows. The majority of the Russian LNG imports come from privately owned Novatek, the country’s second-largest natural gas producer after Gazprom. “I expect that Russian LNG will continue to play an important role in filling European storage going into winter of 2023,” he told CNN Business. “[Europe] would rather get whatever [it] can in terms of Russian pipeline gas and Russian LNG… it would take a lot before [it] would think about sanctioning gas or LNG from Russia,” Ramesh said.
The increased output could also cool prices for other oil products, especially for gasoline, and dampen overall refining margins. Half of the increase, though, will still come from Asia's biggest refiner Sinopec (600028.SS), one of them said, as it raises output to produce more diesel and raise fuel exports. So the mandate from the headquarters is to boost diesel production to supply the domestic market and also to raise exports," one of the Sinopec sources said. Further boosting supply, China's largest private refiner Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical Co (ZPC) is raising diesel output by cutting petrochemical production. Lockdowns have become more frequent and China's borders remain mostly shut, hurting domestic gasoline and aviation fuel sales.
Canada's oil sands hold the world's third-largest crude reserves and the long-life projects can produce for decades. Last week Suncor agreed to buy Teck Resources' (TECKb.TO) Fort Hills stake for about C$1 billion ($737 million) in cash as "part of our Base Plant mine replacement strategy". Other acquisition targets could include French major TotalEnergies' (TTEF.PA) stake in Fort Hills and its 50% share of the Surmont thermal oil sands project, Oberstoetter added. Last month TotalEnergies said it plans to spin off its Canadian oil sands assets into a separate company. The Fort Hills deal is the latest move by Calgary-based Suncor to focus on its core oil sands business.

A deal to sell Wood Mackenzie will allow Verisk Analytics to focus exclusively on insurance. Verisk Analytics Inc. has struck a deal to sell its energy-consulting arm, Wood Mackenzie, to private-equity firm Veritas Capital in a transaction valued at $3.1 billion or more. The transaction, expected to be unveiled later Monday, comes after the company kicked off a strategic review in 2021, Chief Executive Lee Shavel told The Wall Street Journal. Veritas could pay up to an additional $200 million depending on how well it does on the investment, he said.

London CNN Business —Europe has more natural gas than it knows what to do with. Now, EU gas storage facilities are close to full, tankers carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) are lining up at ports, unable to unload their cargoes, and prices are tumbling. The price of benchmark European natural gas futures has dropped 20% since last Thursday, and by more than 70% since hitting a record high in late August. Prices turned negative because of an “oversupplied grid,” Tomas Marzec-Manser, head of gas analytics at the Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS), told CNN Business. The bloc has ramped up imports of LNG from the United States and Qatar as natural gas imports from Russia plummeted.
On Tuesday, the EU steered away from a proposed price cap on Russian gas as it laid out new measures to tackle high energy prices. Overall LNG imports fell 7% year-on-year. Overall LNG imports fell 7% year-on-year. The decrease in LNG imports for Japan, Pakistan and India were 17%, 73% and 22% respectively, the IEA said. However, there is a clear increase month on month of coal power generation," IEEFA energy finance analyst Ghee Peh said.
"East of Suez is sending everything they can ship... it's just a question of how much China exports in November," a Europe-based trader said. Exports from India and the Middle East for October to northwest Europe were at around 480,000 tonnes and 834,000 tonnes respectively, compared with 361,000 tonnes and 511,310 tonnes a month ago, the data showed. The trader estimated that Europe may import about 3 million tonnes (750,000-850,000 barrels per day) from east of Suez in November, of which the Middle East could account for two-third of the volume. Traders expect the bulk of supplies to Europe to come from India and the Middle East, on shorter shipping times. Already soaring diesel prices in the United States have led traders to divert several cargoes heading from the Middle East to Europe to the New York harbour area, further constraining supplies in Europe.
Amid resistance from France, Spain and Italy had previously broached the idea of building an underwater pipeline between the two countries. Iberdrola, which is building Europe's largest green hydrogen plant in Puertollano in central Spain, declined to comment on the pipeline announcement. Cepsa CEO Maarten Wetselsaar told Reuters the agreement put Spain at the heart of Europe's plan to diversify away from Russian energy. As for natural gas, Spain has six terminals allowing it to bring in liquefied natural gas and convert it into its gaseous form, and three storage facilities, while Portugal has one. The United States and Nigeria are among key suppliers of LNG to Spain, which also receives piped gas from Algeria.
And demand for the greener fuel has dried up, according to Reuters interviews with nine LNG market analysts, industry officials and traders. Several gas drillers, including in the world’s top gas producer the United States, told Reuters they have invested in finding and plugging greenhouse gas emissions associated with production, transport and processing. Since Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, gas prices have soared about 25% in the United States and 32% in Europe . To export gas, the fuel must be supercooled into LNG and then shipped across the sea, a process that produces substantial additional greenhouse gas emissions. Other U.S. LNG suppliers, like Cove Point LNG and Cameron LNG, also told Reuters they are not certifying their cargoes.
Cornelius Poppe/NTB/AFP/Getty ImagesBut success has come at a heavy cost to the economy: the scramble for alternative sources has sent energy prices soaring. Alexei Miller, CEO of Russian state energy giant Gazprom, said on Wednesday that there was “no guarantee” that Europe would survive the winter with its current reserves. “Adopting policies that prevent the pass-through of high energy prices to consumers is an expensive gamble that is doomed to fail if wholesale energy prices will stay high in the future,” he added. Carlos Torres Diaz, head of power analysis at Rystad Energy, told CNN business that Europe’s energy transition “has been put on hold” as it prioritizes energy security. “These sources of energy also help reduce the dependency on energy imports,” Torres Diaz added.

Solar energy company Sunrun could see its share price double as it grows is residential business, according to Northland Capital Markets. Analyst Abhishek Sinha initiated Sunrun at a $60 price target, which would be a nearly 100% jump from its current price of $30.24. Sinha said the company stands to gain as the residential solar market grows 10% to 15% each year in 2022 and 2023 despite headwinds. "We believe this is just the very beginning of a secular bull market thesis as residential solar should become more widely prevalent greatly benefiting companies like RUN," Sinha said in a note to clients. Sinha cited data from Wood Mackenzie showing solar deployment should increase by 40% over the next few years, further bolstering the expectation of increasing demand .
BlackRock's acquisition of Vanguard Renewables underscores the rise of renewable natural gas. It is also where the world's largest asset manager went and found its latest target: An eight-year-old energy company with 160 employees called Vanguard Renewables. Last month BlackRock said one of its funds would acquire Vanguard (no relation to its asset management rival), which produces what the industry calls renewable natural gas, or biomethane. "The gas industry has done a great job in branding both natural gas and renewable natural gas. RNG projects capture methane, which has a far greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide, and turn that into a renewable energy.
